Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The room felt like it had stopped existing.

For a moment, there was only one thought repeating inside my head.

*Adrian Vale’s father is alive.*

I looked at the photograph again.

Three men.

My father.

Lucian.

And a man I had only ever seen in newspapers.

Victor Vale.

The founder of Vale Holdings.

The man who supposedly died six years ago after a sudden heart attack.

The man whose funeral Adrian attended publicly.

The man whose company Adrian inherited.

The man whose death had turned Adrian from a wealthy heir into the face of one of the biggest corporations in the city.

But he wasn’t dead.

He was alive.

And my father knew.

“Explain.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lucian looked at me carefully.

“Before I do, you need to understand something.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His eyebrows tightened.

“No?””

“No more warnings. No more ‘you need to understand.’ No more people deciding how much truth I can handle.””

I held up the photograph.

“My father died. My fiancé betrayed me. I was accused of a crime I didn’t commit. And now you’re telling me the father of the man who destroyed my life has been alive this entire time.””

My voice cracked.

“So explain.””

Lucian was silent.

Then he nodded.

“Fair.””

He walked toward the table.

“Victor Vale was never officially connected to the things his company did.””

“Illegal operations.””

“Yes.””

“But he was responsible?””

Lucian’s expression hardened.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked down.

“Victor was careful. He never touched anything directly. He created layers of people between himself and the crimes.””

I looked at him.

“And my father found proof.””

“Yes.””

My fingers tightened around the photo.

“What happened after?””

Lucian looked at the picture.

“Your father brought the information to me.””

The answer shocked me.

“To you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew the law would not be enough.””

The words bothered me.

Not because they were surprising.

Because I understood them.

People like Victor Vale didn’t fear normal consequences.

They bought silence.

They bought loyalty.

They bought time.

“So what did you do?””

Lucian’s face became colder.

“I helped him disappear.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“You helped my father fake his death?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“Your father’s accident was real.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“Victor’s people tried to kill him.””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father survived. Barely.””

I covered my mouth.

“And then?””

Lucian looked at me.

“Then he realized that if everyone believed he was dead, they would stop looking for him.””

“But I thought he was dead.””

His eyes softened.

“That was the hardest part.””

I looked away.

Because suddenly, the anger I had carried for eight years felt complicated.

My father didn’t abandon me.

He left because he thought it was the only way to keep me alive.

But why?

Why not tell me?

Why not trust me?

As if Lucian could hear my thoughts, he said:

“He wanted to.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Your father wanted to contact you.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

“Because Victor threatened you.””

The room became cold.

“What?””

Lucian’s voice lowered.

“Victor knew Elena was the one thing your father could not lose.””

My eyes burned.

“He used me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Adrian get close to me?””

Lucian’s silence answered before he did.

“Because Victor’s son inherited his father’s methods.””

The pieces connected.

The engagement.

The financial control.

The stolen clients.

The wedding.

Everything.

Adrian wasn’t just trying to embarrass me.

He was trying to take control of everything my father had left behind.

Including me.

“What was in the evidence?””

Lucian glanced at the flash drive.

“We need to find out.””

I picked it up.

“You haven’t opened it?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because your father encrypted it.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Can you open it?””

He shook his head.

“Your father created the security himself.””

I almost smiled.

That sounded like him.

My father loved puzzles.

He used to hide birthday gifts around the house with clues because he said “finding something makes it more valuable.””

I connected the drive to the old laptop sitting on the table.

The screen lit up.

A password box appeared.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What would he choose?””

I stared at the screen.

The phrase from the box came back.

*The first promise you made.*

I typed:

Never give up.

Wrong.

I tried my birthday.

Wrong.

My father’s name.

Wrong.

The date he died.

Wrong.

My frustration grew.

“He always did this.””

Lucian looked at me.

“Did what?””

“Made everything difficult.””

A small smile appeared despite everything.

“He said easy answers made lazy people.””

I closed my eyes.

Then I remembered something.

A conversation years ago.

My father sitting at the kitchen table.

Me complaining about a difficult accounting exam.

He had smiled.

“Numbers are honest, Elena.””

“I hate numbers.””

“No, you hate that they don’t let you pretend.””

I laughed.

“You always say that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Then he tapped my notebook.

“Remember something.””

“What?””

“The truth is usually hidden in the thing everyone ignores.””

I opened my eyes.

The thing everyone ignores.

I looked at the password screen.

Not the accident.

Not his death.

Not the wedding.

The promise.

The first promise.

Not the words I said.

The words he said.

I typed:

*truth*

The screen unlocked.

Everyone froze.

Files appeared.

Hundreds of them.

Financial records.

Videos.

Photographs.

Names.

I clicked the first file.

A recording opened.

My father appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My knees almost gave out.

“Dad…”

His voice filled the room.

“If you’re watching this, Elena, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My father looked directly into the camera.

Like he was speaking only to me.

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

Two words I had waited eight years to hear.

“I know you’re angry.””

My eyes filled.

“I know you’ll think I didn’t trust you.””

He paused.

“But the truth is, I trusted you more than anyone.””

I covered my mouth.

“Your intelligence. Your courage. Your heart.””

His expression became serious.

“But courage without protection gets people killed.””

The video continued.

“Victor Vale is not the only person involved. There are people inside the government, law enforcement, and financial institutions protecting him.””

Lucian’s expression changed.

My father continued.

“Do not go to the authorities.””

A pause.

“Not until you know who you can trust.””

The words felt painfully familiar.

Then came the part that made my entire body freeze.

“Lucian Moretti.””

Lucian stepped closer to the screen.

My father looked into the camera.

“If Lucian is with you, listen carefully.””

I looked at Lucian.

His face was unreadable.

“He will tell you he wants to protect you.””

A pause.

“And he does.””

My breath caught.

“But protection is not the same as honesty.””

The room became silent.

My father continued.

“There is something Lucian does not know.””

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

The video played on.

“Something I discovered before my accident.””

I leaned closer.

My father’s voice lowered.

“Lucian Moretti was not the person who betrayed me.””

A pause.

“But someone close to him was.””

My heart pounded.

Lucian stared at the screen.

“Someone close to me?””

The video continued.

“I couldn’t tell Lucian because if he knew, he would act before we had proof.””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“Elena, if Lucian is standing beside you now, it means he kept his promise.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“But ask yourself one question.””

The screen flickered.

Then my father said:

“Who benefits most from making you and Lucian trust each other?””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

The silence afterward was worse than the recording.

Because now there were new questions.

Not answers.

Questions.

I turned slowly toward Lucian.

“You knew about the evidence.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Victor Vale was alive.””

“Yes.””

My voice dropped.

“But you didn’t know someone close to you betrayed him.””

“No.””

For the first time, he looked genuinely shaken.

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But belief had almost destroyed me once already.

A loud alarm suddenly sounded throughout the house.

Everyone turned.

Daniel rushed toward the window.

“Someone’s coming.””

Lucian immediately moved.

“How many?””

Daniel looked outside.

His face changed.

“Too many.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

I opened it.

One sentence.

No number.

No name.

Just words.

*Now you know the truth. But you still don’t know the traitor standing next to you.*

I looked up.

Lucian was already watching me.

And outside, headlights surrounded the house.

Someone had found us.

Someone who knew exactly where we were.

Someone who wanted me to doubt the only person who had protected me.

Then the front gate exploded open.

And through the darkness came a voice from outside.

A voice I recognized.

Adrian.

“ELENA!””

My blood froze.

“I know you’re in there.””

Lucian stepped in front of me.

But this time…

May you like

I wasn’t sure if he was protecting me from Adrian.

Or protecting Adrian from me.
