Chapter 3: The Lie That Turned the City Against Me

For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

“Adrian is saying I stole from him?””

Lucian didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me enough.

I took the phone from his hand before he could stop me.

The screen was filled with notifications.

News alerts.

Social media posts.

Messages.

My name was everywhere.

But not in the way it should have been.

*ELENA MARSH ACCUSED OF CORPORATE THEFT AFTER FAILED WEDDING DRAMA*

*VALE HOLDINGS CLAIMS MISSING FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS WERE STOLEN BY FORMER FIANCÉE*

*MYSTERY SURROUNDS BILLIONAIRE HEIR ADRIAN VALE’S ABANDONED BRIDE*

I stared at the headlines.

The words blurred.

Former fiancée.

Missing documents.

Corporate theft.

It was so perfectly designed.

Too perfectly.

Adrian hadn’t just wanted to humiliate me.

He wanted to destroy me.

“You have got to be kidding me.””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Lucian stood beside me, watching.

“He moved quickly.””

I looked up.

“You knew he would do this.””

“Yes.””

The answer made my anger flare.

“And you didn’t warn me?””

His expression hardened slightly.

“I didn’t know when he would strike.””

“But you knew something was coming.””

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

It wasn’t amusement.

It was disbelief.

“So everyone knew except me.””

“Not everyone.””

I looked at him.

“Who knew?””

His silence returned.

I hated that silence.

Because silence was where powerful people hid their secrets.

“Lucian.””

He held my gaze.

“Your father trusted me because I knew when to keep information hidden.””

“And look where that got me.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

But I didn’t take them back.

“I spent a year believing I was building a future with someone who was destroying me. I don’t need another man deciding what I can handle.””

Something changed in Lucian’s expression.

Not anger.

Something closer to understanding.

“You’re right.””

The agreement surprised me.

I expected an argument.

A justification.

Instead, he simply nodded.

“You deserve the truth.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then start.””

The night air was cold around us.

Behind Lucian’s estate, the city stretched beneath the hills, glowing with thousands of lights.

Beautiful.

From a distance.

But I had learned something today.

Beautiful things could hide rotten foundations.

Lucian gestured toward the mansion.

“Come inside.””

I didn’t move.

“I’m not walking into a stranger’s house while being accused of a crime.””

“You’re not a prisoner.””

“Am I supposed to trust you because you say that?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“You shouldn’t trust anyone because they say something.””

That caught me off guard.

He looked toward the entrance.

“You should trust evidence.””

A small part of me hated that he was right.

Because evidence was the one thing I understood.

Numbers didn’t lie.

People did.

I followed him inside.

The Moretti estate was nothing like I imagined.

I expected something cold.

Dark.

A place full of intimidation.

Instead, it looked almost normal.

Books lined the walls.

A fireplace burned quietly.

Old paintings hung above polished wooden furniture.

It didn’t look like the home of a man people whispered about.

It looked like the home of someone who had survived things he never talked about.

Lucian led me into a large office.

A folder sat on his desk.

My name was written across the front.

Elena Marsh.

My stomach tightened.

“You already had a file on me.””

He didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

Again, that honesty.

It was unsettling.

“Then why?””

Lucian opened the folder.

“Because Adrian Vale was investigating you before you ever started investigating him.””

I froze.

“What?””

He pulled out several documents.

“Bank records. Company reports. Private communications.””

I stepped closer.

The first page was a financial statement.

The second was a list of names.

The third made my heart stop.

My own name was there.

“What is this?””

“Adrian’s preparation.””

“For what?””

Lucian looked at me.

“For making you the perfect person to blame.””

The room felt smaller.

I grabbed the document.

“He planned this?””

“Yes.””

I scanned the pages.

There were dates.

Transactions.

Notes.

My entire life had been turned into a case file.

My habits.

My company.

My relationships.

Even my father.

“He studied me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Lucian’s voice lowered.

“Because you were getting close.””

“To what?””

He pointed to the financial documents.

“The truth.””

I looked down.

My hands trembled.

Three months ago, I had discovered irregularities in Vale Holdings’ accounts.

Small ones.

The kind most people would miss.

A transfer here.

A duplicated invoice there.

Nothing obvious.

But patterns mattered.

And I had spent years finding patterns.

When I brought it up to Adrian, he laughed.

“You’re seeing problems because you’re looking too hard.””

I remembered his smile.

The way he kissed my forehead afterward.

“You worry too much.””

I had hated those words.

Because deep down, part of me believed him.

Now I knew.

He wanted me to doubt myself.

Lucian walked toward the desk.

“Show me what you found.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“Your audit.””

I hesitated.

“No.””

His eyebrows lifted slightly.

“No?””

“You don’t get to walk into my life, reveal that my fiancé is a criminal, then expect me to hand you everything I know.””

For the first time, something almost like approval crossed his face.

“Good.””

I frowned.

“Good?””

“You should not trust me easily.””

That answer annoyed me.

But it also made me listen.

“Then why help me?””

Lucian looked toward the window.

“Because Adrian Vale took something from me too.””

The room went quiet.

“What?””

“My brother.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Lucian rarely showed emotion.

But that one word carried something heavy.

“What happened?””

“He died eight years ago.””

The same time as my father.

I felt a chill.

“How?””

Lucian looked at me.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

A terrible thought formed.

“No.””

He knew what I was thinking.

“Yes.””

“My father and your brother…”

“Were connected.””

I sat down slowly.

The world I knew was breaking apart again.

First Adrian.

Then my father.

Now this.

Everything I believed was built on a lie.

A knock interrupted us.

A man entered.

Tall.

Serious.

Probably one of Lucian’s security team.

“Boss.””

Lucian turned.

“What?””

“We found the original report.””

Lucian’s expression changed.

“Bring it.””

The man handed him a tablet.

Lucian looked at the screen.

Then his eyes moved to me.

“Elena.””

Something in his voice made me stand.

“What?””

He walked toward me.

“The police report on your father’s accident was altered.””

My heart stopped.

“How do you know?””

“Because the original version says something different.””

He turned the tablet around.

I read the document.

At first, the words didn’t make sense.

Then they did.

And when they did, everything inside me went cold.

The original report didn’t say my father lost control of the car.

It didn’t say there was mechanical failure.

It said there was another vehicle involved.

A black sedan.

Registered to a company.

A company I recognized immediately.

My fingers went numb.

“No…”

Lucian watched me carefully.

“You know that name?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I did.

Everyone in the city knew that name.

The same company that appeared in Vale Holdings’ financial records.

The same company connected to Adrian’s family.

My voice barely came out.

“Why would they do this?””

Lucian stepped closer.

“Because your father found something.””

“What?””

He looked at the documents again.

“Something that could destroy the Vale empire.””

I looked at him.

“And now they think I have it.””

“Yes.””

The realization hit me.

The wedding.

The humiliation.

The accusation.

It wasn’t random.

Adrian didn’t just want me gone.

He wanted me discredited.

Because if I disappeared as a disgraced thief, nobody would believe anything I said.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Urgent.

One of Lucian’s men appeared at the door.

“Boss, there’s another problem.””

Lucian turned.

“What now?””

The man looked at me.

Then back at Lucian.

“Someone leaked Elena’s location.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

The man swallowed.

“And they’re already outside the gates.””

Lucian’s entire expression changed.

The calm disappeared.

Not replaced by panic.

Something worse.

Focus.

“How many?””

“Too many.””

I looked toward the windows.

Beyond the gates, distant headlights appeared.

Dozens of them.

My wedding dress suddenly felt heavier.

The world outside wanted me ruined.

The police wanted answers.

Adrian wanted me silent.

And now someone knew exactly where I was.

Lucian stepped in front of me.

“Stay behind me.””

I stared at him.

“You think I’m going to hide?””

His eyes met mine.

“No.””

A faint, dangerous smile appeared.

“That’s why Adrian made a mistake.””

The lights outside grew closer.

Lucian reached for the door.

And before he opened it, my phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone in the room looked at it.

I answered.

A voice came through.

A voice I recognized instantly.

Adrian.

“Hello, Elena.””

My grip tightened.

“What do you want?””

A quiet laugh.

“I want to give you one chance.””

My blood turned cold.

“Chance for what?””

There was a pause.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“To tell me where your father hid the evidence before Lucian Moretti gets you killed.””
