Chapter 9: The Last Piece Of Lucas’s Truth
One year after Lucas’s death, I stood in the same kitchen where everything began.
The same floor.
The same walls.
But I was different.
Lily played nearby, laughing as sunlight filled the room.
For a long time, I hated this house.
I thought it held too many memories.
Too much pain.
But eventually, I understood something.
The house wasn’t where I lost Lucas.
It was where he left pieces of himself for me to find.
That morning, Samantha arrived with one final envelope.
“I thought we were done.””
She smiled sadly.
“So did I.””
I looked at the envelope.
“More secrets?””
“From Lucas.””
I sighed.
“He really loved surprises.””
She laughed.
“This one is different.””
Inside was a letter.
But this time, it wasn’t addressed to me.
It was addressed to Lily.
I cried before I even read it.
“My little girl,
If you ever wonder who your father was, I want you to know this:
He was someone who made mistakes.
Someone who was afraid.
Someone who loved your mother more than anything in this world.””
I smiled through tears.
Lucas never pretended to be perfect.
That was why I loved him.
The letter continued.
“The greatest thing I ever did wasn’t building a company.””
A pause.
“It was building a family.””
I looked at Lily.
And I finally understood the biggest truth.
Ethan thought Lucas’s power came from money.
My father thought power came from control.
But Lucas knew.
Power came from love.
That was why they couldn’t destroy him.
They could take his life.
But not what he left behind.
Later that afternoon, I received a call.
Charles.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But I answered.
“Victoria.””
His voice sounded older.
“What do you want?””
“I wanted to tell you something.””
I waited.
“I testified against Ethan because it was the right thing.””
I looked outside.
“Why?””
“Because Lucas was right.””
That surprised me.
“About what?””
“About me.””
Silence.
Charles breathed out.
“I spent my entire life thinking people owed me respect.””
His voice cracked.
“I never earned yours.””
I didn’t forgive him.
Not that day.
Maybe not ever.
But for the first time, I heard something real.
Regret.
“I hope someday you can forgive me.””
I looked at Lily.
“I hope someday I can too.””
After the call ended, I walked into Lucas’s office.
The room was quiet.
Peaceful.
I placed Lily’s letter beside his old watch.
“See?””
I whispered.
“She’s here.””
The wind moved through the open window.
And for a moment, I imagined Lucas standing there.
Smiling.
Proud.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Samantha.
One final update.
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
The subject line read:
“Lucas’s Hidden Account.””
I stared.
There was still something left.
Something nobody knew about.
May you like
And inside the message was one sentence:
“Victoria, your husband didn’t just protect you from your enemies. He protected you from the truth about his own past.””
