Chapter 8: The Fight For Lucas’s Legacy
Darkness surrounded me.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
Then I heard Ethan laugh.
“You should have listened.””
My phone was still in my hand.
Recording.
Good.
I kept my voice steady.
“You’re admitting everything.””
“No.””
“You just admitted Lucas was killed because he refused to give you control.””
“You’re twisting my words.””
“Everyone will hear them.””
The lights came back on.
Ethan stood near the door.
Smiling.
“You really think Samantha protected you?””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He placed a folder on the table.
“Ask her.””
My stomach dropped.
I opened it.
Inside were emails.
Between Samantha and Lucas.
But one message stood out.
A warning.
“Samantha, if anything happens to me, do not let Victoria know the full truth until she is safe.””
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Ethan smiled.
“Lucas never trusted you with everything.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
For a moment, doubt entered.
Then I remembered Lucas.
Not the documents.
Not the secrets.
Him.
He wasn’t hiding things to control me.
He was protecting me.
“You’re wrong.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What?””
“You think secrets mean betrayal.””
I closed the folder.
“But Lucas’s secrets were sacrifices.””
His smile disappeared.
That was the first time I saw him lose control.
“You sound just like him.””
“Good.””
Then the doors opened.
Police entered.
Ethan froze.
Samantha walked behind them.
“He talked.””
Ethan looked at me.
“You recorded me.””
“Yes.””
The arrogance disappeared from his face.
For the first time, he looked powerless.
The following weeks became a storm.
Investigations.
Court hearings.
Evidence.
The truth finally came out.
Ethan had planned everything.
Marcus helped.
Courtney helped.
Charles provided information.
And my father?
He confessed.
Not because he became a good man.
Because he finally understood the damage he caused.
The day he testified, he looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t answer.
Some wounds don’t heal because someone apologizes.
They heal because you stop waiting for them to.
Months later, my daughter was born.
I named her Lily.
Lucas’s favorite flower.
When I held her for the first time, I whispered:
“Your daddy loved you before he ever met you.””
The company survived.
The house stayed mine.
And Lucas’s legacy remained protected.
But there was one final thing I needed to understand.
Why had Lucas known?
Why had he prepared for betrayal?
Samantha answered that question one afternoon.
She handed me a letter.
“Lucas wrote this two days before the accident.””
My hands trembled.
I opened it.
“Victoria,
If you’re reading this, I’m sorry I wasn’t there.””
I stopped.
The tears came.
“I spent years believing protecting people meant carrying every burden alone.””
I continued.
“But you taught me something.””
The next line broke me.
“Love isn’t about hiding someone from the storm. It’s about trusting them to survive it.””
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Lucas had never seen me as weak.
Everyone else did.
My father.
Courtney.
Ethan.
They saw a grieving widow.
A pregnant woman.
May you like
Someone easy to control.
They were wrong.
