Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything

The police arrived before Charles could finish his phone call.

I watched through the doorway as two officers approached the house.

Charles immediately changed.

That was the thing about my father.

He could become a different person depending on who was watching.

To me, he was the man who dragged his pregnant daughter across a floor.

To strangers, he was a grieving father trying to “help.””

Officer Miller knelt beside me.

“Ma’am, are you hurt?””

I looked toward the house.

Then back at him.

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“My father did this.””

Charles stepped outside.

“Officer, this is a misunderstanding.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

Courtney stood behind him with her arms crossed.

“He’s just trying to protect her.””

Officer Miller looked between us.

“Sir, did you remove her from the residence?””

Charles hesitated.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“Yes, but—”

“Did you put your hands on her?””

“She resisted.””

I felt something inside me break.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was lying.

Officer Miller looked at me.

“Do you want medical assistance?””

I looked down at my stomach.

“Yes.””

The ambulance arrived ten minutes later.

As they helped me onto the stretcher, Charles called out.

“Victoria, don’t make this worse.””

I turned my head.

“You already did.””

At the hospital, everything became bright lights and urgent voices.

A nurse checked the baby’s heartbeat.

“Your daughter is stable,” she said.

I closed my eyes.

Daughter.

Lucas had wanted a girl.

He used to place his hand on my stomach and say, “She’s going to have your stubborn personality.””

I cried for the first time that day.

Not from pain.

From missing him.

Samantha arrived two hours later.

She walked into my hospital room carrying a folder.

Her face was serious.

“Victoria.””

“What happened?””

She sat beside me.

“Your father attempted to access Lucas’s business accounts this morning.””

I stared at her.

“How?””

“By presenting documents claiming you authorized him.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know.””

She opened the folder.

“He forged your signature.””

My hands went cold.

“What happens now?””

Samantha looked directly at me.

“Now your father finds out Lucas planned for this.””

She showed me a document.

“Lucas created a family protection trust.””

I read the first page.

My name.

My baby’s name.

And Lucas’s signature.

“He did this before he died?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Samantha looked away.

“Because he didn’t want you to live afraid.””

That hurt.

Because Lucas had known something I refused to believe.

That someone close to me might hurt me.

“Who did he think would come after me?””

Samantha hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Your father.””

The room felt smaller.

“Lucas didn’t trust him?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Samantha opened another file.

Inside were bank records.

Emails.

Messages.

“He discovered Charles had been asking questions about the company.””

“What kind of questions?””

“The kind someone asks when they want control.””

I stared at the papers.

Lucas had been protecting me.

Even when I didn’t know I needed protection.

Later that evening, I was discharged with strict instructions to rest.

When I returned to the house, police tape covered the front door.

My home looked like a crime scene.

Maybe it was.

Samantha walked beside me.

“Don’t go inside alone.””

“I need to see what’s missing.””

Inside, everything felt wrong.

The silence.

The emptiness.

The fact that someone had walked through my memories with dirty shoes.

Lucas’s office was the worst.

His drawers were open.

His files were scattered.

Then I saw something.

A small envelope on his desk.

My name was written on it.

In Lucas’s handwriting.

I stopped breathing.

Samantha noticed.

“What is it?””

I touched the envelope.

“He left this for me.””

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

“If Charles ever tries to take what belongs to you, look beneath the floorboard in my office.””

I looked at Samantha.

“What floorboard?””

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Victoria Gallagher?””

“Yes?””

“You need to leave that house immediately.””

My heart raced.

“Who is this?””

The man paused.

May you like

Then he said:

“I’m the person who helped Lucas prepare for the day your father betrayed you.””
