Chapter 10: Everything Lucas Left Behind

I spent three days wondering whether I wanted to know.

That was the strange thing about secrets.

People always say they want the truth.

Until the truth has the power to change everything.

Lucas’s hidden account contained one final file.

A video.

Recorded years earlier.

Before we met.

Before our marriage.

Before Lily.

I sat alone in his office and pressed play.

Lucas appeared on the screen.

Younger.

Different.

But still him.

“If you’re watching this, it means the people I feared finally found the cracks.””

I held my breath.

“I need you to know something, Victoria.””

My eyes filled.

Even after all this time, hearing his voice felt impossible.

“I wasn’t always the person you knew.””

The video continued.

“When I was younger, I made choices I’m not proud of.””

I frowned.

Lucas had always been honest.

But he had never talked about this.

“I believed winning mattered more than kindness.””

He looked away.

“Then I lost my relationship with my brother. My father’s respect. Almost everything.””

I understood.

Ethan’s anger.

The bitterness.

But not the excuse.

Lucas continued.

“Years later, when I met you, everything changed.””

A small smile appeared.

“You reminded me that success without love is just loneliness with expensive furniture.””

I laughed through tears.

That was Lucas.

Even serious moments somehow became funny.

“The reason I created the trust wasn’t because I believed everyone would betray you.””

He paused.

“It was because I believed you would blame yourself.””

That sentence destroyed me.

Because he was right.

After he died, I spent months asking what I could have done differently.

“If you are watching this, Victoria, please don’t spend your life fighting ghosts.””

His eyes looked directly into the camera.

“Live.””

The video ended.

I sat there for a long time.

Then I did something I hadn’t done since Lucas died.

I smiled.

Not because I wasn’t hurt.

Because I finally understood.

He hadn’t left me a life full of battles.

He had left me a life full of chances.

Years later, people would ask me how I survived.

They would expect me to say revenge.

Justice.

Strength.

And yes, those things mattered.

But the real answer was simpler.

I remembered who I was.

The woman my father tried to throw away.

The woman Courtney laughed at.

The woman Ethan underestimated.

She was still me.

But stronger.

My daughter grew up knowing her father’s story.

Not the story of how he died.

The story of how he lived.

She knew he loved music too loudly.

She knew he burned pancakes every Sunday.

She knew he cried during movies and denied it afterward.

She knew he built something incredible.

But more importantly, she knew he loved people.

Years later, I visited Lucas’s grave with Lily.

She placed flowers down carefully.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Do you think Dad would be proud of us?””

I looked at the name carved into stone.

Lucas Gallagher.

My husband.

My best friend.

The man who protected me even when he wasn’t there.

“Yes,” I said.

“I know he would.””

The wind moved gently through the trees.

And for the first time, I didn’t feel like I was standing beside a grave.

I felt like I was standing beside a promise.

Because Lucas had taught me something nobody else could.

People can steal houses.

They can steal money.

They can steal power.

But they can never steal what someone leaves inside your heart.

My father thought he was throwing me away.

He thought I was just a pregnant widow standing in the cold.

He thought he had taken everything from me.

He never understood.

That morning, when he dragged me out of my house…

he wasn’t removing me from Lucas’s legacy.

May you like

He was pushing me directly into it.

And that was the biggest mistake he ever made.
