Chapter 8: The Ghost From My Past
I stared at the photograph until my eyes refused to focus.
The man standing beside Rachel was impossible.
At least, that was what I had believed for seven years.
Thomas Reed.
My late wife’s younger brother.
The man who vanished after the funeral.
The man who left behind unanswered questions, unpaid debts, and a family that refused to speak his name.
The man who had supposedly disappeared from our lives forever.
But there he was.
Standing beside my sister.
Alive.
And planning something.
Detective Mitchell watched my reaction.
“You know him.””
I slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
I picked up the photograph.
“Someone who should not be here.””
Emily looked between us.
“Dad?””
I turned toward her.
“This man was your mother’s brother.””
Her eyes widened.
“Uncle Thomas?””
I nodded.
“I haven’t seen him since you were a child.””
“What happened?””
I looked back at the photograph.
That was the question I had spent years avoiding.
What happened to Thomas?
The official answer was simple.
He left.
But the truth was never that simple.
After my wife, Laura, died, Thomas had been one of the few people who stayed close to us.
At first, I thought he was helping.
He came to the house.
He helped with Emily.
He told me I needed support.
And I believed him.
Until I found out he had been stealing.
Small things at first.
Money from an account.
Company information.
Documents.
When I confronted him, he denied everything.
Then he disappeared.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just gone.
I had spent years wondering if I had been too harsh.
If grief had made me see things incorrectly.
But now?
Now he was standing in the middle of everything.
Detective Mitchell sat down.
“Tell me exactly what happened with him.””
I explained everything.
Every detail.
When I finished, the detective looked at the photograph again.
“So he had knowledge of your family and your business.””
“Yes.””
“And access?””
I nodded.
“Before he disappeared, yes.””
Emily suddenly spoke.
“Dad.””
I looked at her.
“Something doesn’t make sense.””
“What?””
“If Uncle Thomas was involved…”
She looked at the photo.
“Why would Brandon need me?””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“If they already had someone inside your family…”
Her voice became quieter.
“Why did they marry me?””
The question hit harder than I expected.
Because it was the right question.
Brandon didn’t randomly choose Emily.
He chose her.
But why?
Detective Mitchell leaned forward.
“Maybe the marriage wasn’t just about Emily.””
My eyes moved to him.
“What are you saying?””
“Your daughter gave Brandon access to your family legally.””
Emily looked confused.
“He married me for my father?””
The words sounded painful.
I reached for her hand.
“No.””
But even I felt the uncertainty.
Detective Mitchell continued.
“Marriage creates trust. Invitations. Documents. Relationships.””
He paused.
“Brandon didn’t need to break into your life.””
“He was invited.””
The sentence stayed with me.
Because it was true.
The most dangerous people are not always the ones who force their way inside.
Sometimes they are the ones you welcome.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone became quiet.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was no response.
Then an older man’s voice spoke.
“Martin.””
My blood turned cold.
I recognized it.
Even after seven years.
“Thomas.””
Emily sat up.
The room changed instantly.
The ghost from my past was calling.
“You finally found me.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You were never lost.””
A pause.
“You’re angry.””
“You betrayed my family.””
Thomas sighed.
“You still believe that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
His voice became harder.
“You only know the story you were given.””
I looked at Detective Mitchell.
He was recording.
“Where are you?””
Thomas laughed softly.
“You think I’m going to tell you that?””
“You called me.””
“Because you need to know the truth.””
I glanced at Emily.
“What truth?””
A long silence followed.
Then Thomas said:
“Your wife didn’t die because of an accident.””
The room went completely still.
My hand froze.
“What did you say?””
Emily covered her mouth.
Detective Mitchell immediately leaned closer.
Thomas continued.
“Laura discovered what they were doing.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
“You know who.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Tell me.””
“Brandon’s father. Ethan. Rachel.””
I closed my eyes.
Another name.
Another betrayal.
Thomas continued.
“They were moving money for years.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
A bitter laugh.
“Because nobody would have believed me.””
“You disappeared.””
“Because I was threatened.””
The room went silent.
Emily whispered:
“Threatened?””
Thomas heard her.
“Emily.””
She moved closer to the phone.
“Uncle Thomas?””
His voice softened.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not protecting your mother.””
My chest tightened.
“Thomas, explain.””
He took a breath.
“Laura found evidence that Brandon’s father was using companies to hide illegal transfers.””
Detective Mitchell’s expression changed.
“She tried to expose them.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Thomas was quiet.
Then:
“She died before she could.””
I felt like the air disappeared.
“No.””
Thomas continued.
“Martin, I saw the reports.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
My hands trembled.
Because for seven years, I had lived with the pain of losing my wife.
But I had never considered that someone had taken her from me.
Emily started crying.
“Dad…”
I couldn’t look at her.
I couldn’t let her see what I was feeling.
Not yet.
Thomas continued.
“Laura left behind evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The same evidence Brandon has been searching for.””
I looked at Detective Mitchell.
“The documents?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
“Thomas.””
“I don’t have them.””
“Then who does?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Emily.””
My daughter froze.
“What?””
Thomas spoke carefully.
“Your mother hid the final piece of evidence before she died.””
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t know anything.””
“You do.””
“No.””
“Emily, think.””
His voice became urgent.
“Your mother trusted you.””
My daughter closed her eyes.
Slowly, she reached toward the necklace around her neck.
A necklace I had given her on her sixteenth birthday.
The one that belonged to her mother.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She touched the small silver pendant.
“My mom…”
Her voice trembled.
“She told me something.””
I stood.
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
“I thought it was just a memory.””
She removed the necklace.
Her fingers shook as she opened the back.
Inside was a tiny compartment.
A folded piece of paper sat inside.
My breath caught.
Detective Mitchell immediately moved closer.
Emily carefully unfolded it.
There was only one sentence written in her mother’s handwriting.
My knees almost gave out.
Because I recognized that handwriting.
I had seen it every morning for fifteen years.
The message said:
*Martin, if you are reading this, it means they finally came for our family. Trust no one who knows our name.*
Below the message was one final line.
One name.
The person Laura believed would betray us.
The person she warned me about seven years ago.
The person I never suspected.
Emily looked up slowly.
Her face was filled with fear.
“Dad…”
I stared at the name.
And felt my entire world shift.
Because the person my wife had warned me about…
May you like
Was standing only a few miles away.
And I had spent years calling her my sister.
