Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside My Own Company

The name sat heavy in the air.

I couldn’t say it.

Not immediately.

Because saying it would make it real.

Detective Mitchell watched me carefully.

“Mr. Carter?””

I looked away from the screen.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Ethan Brooks has been my partner for twenty-two years.””

The detective remained silent.

“He was there when I started my first company. He was there when my wife died. He helped me raise Emily when I was barely holding everything together.””

I looked back at the frozen image.

“And now you’re telling me he was standing in my daughter’s house with Brandon?””

Detective Mitchell nodded.

“I’m telling you what the footage shows.””

I leaned back.

“What do you know about him?””

“Not enough yet.””

That answer bothered me.

Because I knew Ethan.

Or at least I thought I did.

Ethan wasn’t the kind of person people suspected.

He wasn’t loud.

He wasn’t arrogant.

He didn’t walk into rooms demanding attention.

He was the opposite.

Quiet.

Reliable.

The person everyone trusted because he never seemed to need anything.

And maybe that was exactly why I never questioned him.

Detective Mitchell tapped the tablet.

“There’s more.””

He played another video.

This time, it was from outside the mansion.

The camera showed Brandon walking toward the shed.

Ethan followed.

They talked for several minutes.

The audio was poor.

But one sentence came through clearly.

Brandon’s voice.

“She doesn’t know anything about her father’s accounts.””

Ethan answered.

“She doesn’t need to.””

The video stopped.

My stomach tightened.

Detective Mitchell looked at me.

“Does that mean anything to you?””

I didn’t answer.

Because it did.

It meant everything.

Emily wasn’t just caught in Brandon’s plans.

She had been used as a doorway.

A way into my company.

A way into everything I had spent my life building.

I stood.

“I need to speak with Ethan.””

Detective Mitchell shook his head.

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because if he knows we suspect him, we lose our advantage.””

I looked at him.

“You think he’ll run?””

“I think people who hide secrets rarely stay when those secrets are discovered.””

I hated that he was right.

But I hated something else more.

The thought that Ethan had looked me in the eyes for years while betraying me.

The detective gathered the documents.

“We’re also looking into the company that used Emily’s signature.””

“And?””

“It was created through an offshore account.””

I frowned.

“Can you trace it?””

“We’re working on it.””

He paused.

“But there’s something unusual.””

“What?””

“The person who created the company didn’t use Brandon’s information.””

I looked at him.

“Whose did they use?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Yours.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My identity.

My name.

My reputation.

Everything I built.

Someone had turned them into tools against me.

When I left the station, I didn’t go home.

I went to my office.

The same office where Ethan and I had spent thousands of hours planning, negotiating, and celebrating victories.

The same office where we once promised each other we would never let greed destroy what we built.

I walked past the reception desk.

The employees looked surprised to see me.

I rarely came in anymore.

I had stepped away from daily operations years earlier.

But that morning, I needed to see everything.

I needed to know what had changed.

My assistant, Clara, stood when she saw me.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Where is Ethan?””

Her expression shifted.

“He’s in a meeting.””

“With who?””

She hesitated.

That was enough.

“Clara.””

She lowered her voice.

“Brandon Vale.””

My heart sank.

“Here?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

I looked toward the conference rooms.

“Did they see me?””

“No.””

I nodded.

“Good.””

I walked quietly down the hallway.

The conference room door was slightly open.

I heard Ethan’s voice.

“You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.””

Brandon answered.

“You said everything was handled.””

“It was.””

“Then why is her father involved?””

I stopped.

My own name.

My own business.

My own partner.

Discussing me behind a closed door.

Ethan continued.

“Martin was never supposed to find out.””

I felt something break inside.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

Brandon laughed.

“You underestimated him.””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice became cold.

“I underestimated how attached he was to Emily.””

I pushed the door open.

Both men turned.

The silence was immediate.

Brandon looked shocked.

Ethan looked guilty.

Not surprised.

Guilty.

That told me everything.

“Martin.””

Ethan stood.

“Don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t what?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Brandon recovered first.

“This isn’t what you think.””

I looked at him.

“You’ve said that a lot.””

He stepped forward.

“You’re emotional.””

I almost smiled.

“Emotional?””

“Yes.””

He pointed toward me.

“You’re letting your daughter manipulate you.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

Then I laughed.

A quiet laugh.

Because I finally understood.

This was the same strategy.

Make Emily seem unstable.

Make me seem irrational.

Make everyone question the victims.

I turned to Ethan.

“How long?””

He looked away.

“How long have you been working with him?””

His silence answered.

I walked closer.

“I asked you a question.””

Ethan swallowed.

“Two years.””

Two years.

Two years of meetings.

Two years of handshakes.

Two years of pretending.

I shook my head.

“Why?””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something beneath the betrayal.

Resentment.

“You really don’t know?””

I stared at him.

“No.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Of course you don’t.””

He walked around the table.

“You built everything. You got all the credit. Everyone called you the genius.””

“That’s what this is about?””

“You think it isn’t?””

His voice grew louder.

“I was there too, Martin.””

I stayed quiet.

“I made deals. I fixed problems. I saved the company when you were grieving.””

I looked at him.

“And I thanked you.””

“You gave me a title.””

“I gave you partnership.””

“But never control.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not necessity.

Not desperation.

Greed.

Ethan wanted what I had.

Brandon wanted what his father had.

Different men.

Same hunger.

Brandon stepped beside him.

“You should have retired completely.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You had money. You had properties. You had everything.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You should have disappeared.””

I shook my head.

“You’re angry because I refused to become invisible.””

Ethan looked away.

Brandon smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

He reached into his jacket.

My body immediately tensed.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

“You think Emily was the only person we prepared for?””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is that?””

Ethan answered.

“Your replacement plan.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Brandon smiled.

“The plan for when Martin Carter was no longer useful.””

I opened the folder.

The first page made my blood freeze.

It was a legal document.

A transfer agreement.

My companies.

My properties.

My entire life’s work.

Scheduled to change ownership.

And at the bottom…

My signature.

Again.

Not forged.

Not copied.

Real.

I looked up slowly.

“How did you get this?””

Neither man answered.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

From Emily.

*Dad, I just remembered something. Brandon wasn’t working alone. The person who helped him get access to my documents…*

A second message arrived.

I opened it.

May you like

And my heart stopped.

*…was someone from your family.*
