Chapter 9: The Last Warning From My Wife

I read the name again.

Then again.

As if staring at it long enough would somehow change the letters.

It didn’t.

*Rachel.*

My sister.

The person I had trusted longer than anyone alive.

The person who stood beside me after my parents died.

The person who held Emily when she was born.

The person who cried with me when Laura passed away.

And according to the final warning my wife left behind…

The person who betrayed us.

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Emily was watching me carefully.

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

“I’m okay.””

But I wasn’t.

I had spent years believing betrayal came from outside.

From greedy businessmen.

From strangers.

From people who wanted what I had built.

I never imagined it would come from someone who knew my childhood.

Someone who knew my fears.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt me.

Detective Mitchell carefully took the note from Emily.

“We need to preserve this.””

Emily nodded.

Her eyes never left me.

“Did Mom know?””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

“How?””

I swallowed.

“Because Laura always noticed things other people ignored.””

I remembered the last weeks before she died.

The late-night phone calls.

The way she became quiet whenever Rachel visited.

The way she suddenly asked strange questions.

“Martin, do you ever wonder if the people closest to us know us too well?””

At the time, I thought grief was making her anxious.

I thought she was scared of leaving Emily without a mother.

I never thought she was warning me.

Detective Mitchell looked at me.

“What did your wife tell you before she died?””

I closed my eyes.

The memory came back immediately.

The hospital room.

The smell of antiseptic.

Laura’s weak smile.

Her hand holding mine.

“Martin, promise me something.””

“What?””

“Protect Emily.””

“I will.””

“No matter who tells you otherwise.””

I had smiled.

“Laura, everyone loves Emily.””

Her expression had changed.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

“Not everyone.””

I opened my eyes.

For seven years, I had wondered why she said that.

Now I knew.

My phone vibrated.

A message.

From Rachel.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I showed it to Detective Mitchell.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She knows.””

“Yes.””

“She knows we found out.””

“Which means she’s reacting.””

I stared at the message.

“What if she wants to explain?””

Detective Mitchell was quiet.

Then he said:

“People who are innocent usually want the truth revealed.””

I understood what he meant.

But part of me still struggled.

Because this wasn’t just a suspect.

This was my sister.

The person who knew my mother’s recipes.

The person who helped Emily with homework.

The person who sat beside me at Laura’s funeral.

How could all of those memories be fake?

They couldn’t.

That was the worst part.

Maybe the love was real.

Maybe the betrayal was real too.

The two things could exist at the same time.

I agreed to meet Rachel.

But not alone.

Detective Mitchell arranged surveillance.

The meeting place was an old café near downtown.

A place Rachel and I used to visit years ago.

She was already sitting there when I arrived.

She looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like she had been carrying something heavy for a long time.

She stood.

“Martin.””

I didn’t sit.

“Why?””

Her face changed.

“I know what you found.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“I wanted to explain.””

“You had years.””

Silence.

“Seven years, Rachel.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

“Laura was scared too.””

That hit her.

She looked away.

“What did she tell you?””

I placed the photograph on the table.

Her face turned pale.

Then I placed the note beside it.

The one in Laura’s handwriting.

Rachel closed her eyes.

“She knew.””

My heart tightened.

“You admit it?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I admit she suspected.””

“Why?””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“Because she found out about Thomas.””

I froze.

“What about Thomas?””

Rachel looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“Thomas wasn’t stealing from you.””

The words shocked me.

“What?””

“He was investigating.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were the one person he couldn’t convince.””

“Why?””

“Because you trusted everyone.””

The words hurt because they sounded exactly like something Laura would have said.

“What was he investigating?””

Rachel looked at the note.

“Brandon’s family.””

I sat down.

“Explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“Richard Vale built his company through legitimate business.””

“Then?””

“Then Brandon became obsessed with control.””

She continued.

“He started creating fake companies. Moving money. Buying people.””

“And you?””

Her eyes lowered.

“I got involved.””

The confession came quietly.

But it still felt like a punch.

“Why?””

“Because I thought I could control it.””

I stared at her.

“You worked with him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“How long?””

“Two years.””

I shook my head.

“Two years.””

“I never wanted Emily hurt.””

“But she was.””

Rachel looked broken.

“I know.””

“Brandon attacked my daughter.””

“I know.””

“You helped him get access.””

“I did.””

The words hung between us.

I felt anger.

Pain.

Betrayal.

But beneath all of it was one question.

“Why?””

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“Because Brandon had something.””

“What?””

“A file.””

My expression changed.

“What file?””

“A file about Laura.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What about Laura?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“He had proof that someone close to you helped cause her death.””

My hands tightened.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“Rachel.””

“I swear.””

She leaned forward.

“I thought Brandon was trying to expose the person responsible.””

“Then why did you help him?””

“Because he convinced me you were in danger.””

I stared at her.

“He lied.””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“He lied to everyone.””

A silence followed.

Then Rachel reached into her bag.

“I have something.””

She placed a small drive on the table.

“What is this?””

“Everything I collected.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Why give it to me now?””

She looked at me.

“Because Brandon found out I was trying to leave.””

A chill went through me.

“What did he do?””

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

Rachel looked toward the window.

“With the same thing he used against Emily.””

My heart sank.

“He said nobody would believe me.””

I looked at the drive.

“What’s inside?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Of who was really behind everything.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Detective Mitchell.

I answered.

“Martin, you need to leave.””

I stood immediately.

“What happened?””

His voice was urgent.

“We tracked Brandon’s lawyer.””

“And?””

“He just accessed a sealed document.””

“What document?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your wife’s death report.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

“Because he wasn’t trying to hide it.””

The detective’s voice lowered.

“He was trying to release it.””

I looked at Rachel.

She was already terrified.

Detective Mitchell continued.

“Martin, get Emily somewhere safe.””

“Why?””

“Because if Brandon is opening that file…”

Another pause.

“He’s not trying to escape anymore.””

I gripped the phone.

“What is he doing?””

The answer came quietly.

“He’s preparing to destroy the last person who can expose him.””

The call ended.

I looked at Rachel.

Then at the drive.

Then at the road outside.

Because suddenly I understood.

Brandon wasn’t running from the truth.

He was dragging the truth into the open.

And the person he wanted to blame for everything…

Was me.
