Chapter 3: The Secret Emily Buried

I stared at the message until my eyes burned.

The hospital room was silent except for the steady rhythm of the heart monitor beside Emily’s bed.

A machine kept track of her heartbeat.

But my own felt like it had stopped.

The photo on my phone showed my daughter standing near the shed.

Three months earlier.

Holding something.

A document.

And the message beneath it kept repeating in my mind.

“Ask your daughter why she was trying to expose her husband before he found out.””

I looked at Emily sleeping.

The same daughter who called me terrified.

The same daughter who had whispered, “Don’t let them take the house.””

What had she been hiding from me?

And why?

I wanted to wake her immediately.

I wanted answers.

But when I looked at her bruised face, I remembered something important.

Fear had already taken enough from her.

I wasn’t going to take her sense of safety too.

So I waited.

The next morning, sunlight slipped through the hospital blinds.

Emily slowly opened her eyes.

For a few seconds, she looked confused.

Then she saw me.

“Dad?””

I smiled softly.

“Morning.””

Her eyes moved around the room.

Then she noticed the IV in her arm.

The memories returned.

I saw it happen.

The fear.

The shame.

The pain.

She looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

Those were the first words she said.

Not “thank you.””

Not “I’m okay.””

Sorry.

I reached over and held her hand.

“Emily.””

“I ruined everything.””

“No.””

She swallowed.

“You hate Brandon.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

I continued.

“But I don’t hate you.””

Her eyes filled.

“I should have told you.””

I stayed quiet.

Because I knew.

There was something coming.

Something she had carried alone.

The door opened.

Detective Mitchell entered holding a folder.

“Good morning.””

Emily immediately became tense.

The detective noticed.

“We can do this later if you need time.””

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“Do it now.””

I watched her face.

She had made a decision.

Detective Mitchell sat down.

“We reviewed the security footage from the property.””

Emily’s fingers tightened around mine.

“And?””

He opened the folder.

“The footage confirms there was an altercation.””

Her eyes lowered.

“But there is more.””

He placed several photographs on the table.

Images from the mansion.

The hallway.

The office.

The shed.

“The system had been altered.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Someone deleted several sections of footage.””

Emily looked up.

“Brandon.””

Detective Mitchell nodded.

“Most likely.””

“But you recovered it?””

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then the detective looked at Emily.

“We need you to tell us everything you know.””

Emily stared at the blanket covering her legs.

For a moment, I thought she might refuse.

Then she whispered.

“I found out Brandon was stealing from his family.””

I leaned back.

“What?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Not just money.””

She looked at me.

“Properties.””

The room became still.

Detective Mitchell opened his notebook.

“Explain.””

Emily looked toward the window.

“When I married Brandon, everyone told me I was lucky.””

Her voice was quiet.

“His family was wealthy. They had businesses, houses, investments.””

She paused.

“But I started noticing things.””

“What things?”” I asked.

“Documents.””

She looked down.

“Brandon would come home angry after meetings with his father’s lawyers. He thought nobody listened when he talked on the phone.””

“And you did?””

She nodded.

“One night, I heard him arguing with Judith.””

Her voice changed.

“He said if his father didn’t sign over everything soon, he would find another way.””

Detective Mitchell looked up.

“Another way?””

Emily nodded.

“I didn’t know what he meant at first.””

She closed her eyes.

“Then I found the files.””

The room became quiet.

“Where?””

“In Brandon’s office.””

I frowned.

“You went through his things?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“I know I shouldn’t have.””

I shook my head.

“Emily, if you found evidence of someone hurting people, I don’t care how you found it.””

A small tear fell down her cheek.

“There were contracts.””

“What kind?””

“Fake ones.””

Detective Mitchell leaned forward.

“Fake property transfer agreements?””

“Yes.””

Emily nodded.

“He was creating documents that made it look like family properties had been sold or transferred.””

My stomach tightened.

“How many?””

She looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Detective Mitchell wrote something down.

“But you had proof?””

Emily hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

That question changed her expression.

Fear returned.

I noticed.

“Emily.””

She looked at me.

“I hid copies.””

“Where?””

She didn’t answer.

Not immediately.

Instead, she looked toward the hospital door.

Like she was afraid someone might be listening.

“Dad…”

“Yes?””

“If Brandon finds out where I put them…”

“He won’t.””

“You don’t understand.””

Her voice cracked.

“He has people everywhere.””

Detective Mitchell exchanged a glance with me.

“Emily, did someone threaten you?””

She was silent.

That silence was enough.

“Who?””

She looked at her hands.

“His father.””

I froze.

“His father?””

Emily nodded.

“Before Brandon married me, his father controlled everything.””

“What happened to him?””

Her expression darkened.

“He disappeared.””

Detective Mitchell stopped writing.

“Disappeared?””

“Everyone said he retired.””

“But you don’t believe that?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Because Brandon told me.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he say?””

Emily swallowed.

“He said…”

She stopped.

The memory clearly terrified her.

I squeezed her hand.

“Tell me.””

She looked directly at me.

“He said, ‘People who refuse to give me what I deserve eventually stop being problems.’”

The words sat in the room like smoke.

Detective Mitchell closed his notebook.

“We need to locate those documents immediately.””

Emily nodded.

“I know where they are.””

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

She looked broken.

“I knew Brandon thought you were just some old maintenance worker.””

I looked away.

“I knew if he found out who you really were, he would come after you.””

My throat tightened.

“You were scared he would hurt me?””

She nodded.

“I already saw what he did to people who got in his way.””

For years, I had believed my daughter needed my protection.

But sitting there, I realized something painful.

She had been trying to protect me too.

The door suddenly opened.

A nurse stepped inside.

“Sorry to interrupt.””

She looked at Emily.

“There was a delivery for you.””

Emily frowned.

“I didn’t order anything.””

The nurse handed her a small envelope.

No name.

No return address.

Emily’s face changed the second she saw it.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

She read it.

Then all the color disappeared from her face.

I stood.

“Emily?””

She slowly handed me the paper.

Three words were written across it.

*I FOUND THEM.*

And underneath was a signature.

Not Brandon’s.

Not Judith’s.

Someone else.

Someone Emily thought was gone forever.

May you like

Her former father-in-law.

The man everyone believed had disappeared.
