Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

For several seconds, nobody in the hospital room moved.

The paper trembled between my fingers.

Three words.

That was all it said.

*I FOUND THEM.*

But those three words carried the weight of everything Emily had been afraid of.

I looked at the signature again.

Richard Vale.

Brandon’s father.

The man who supposedly disappeared two years earlier.

The man whose name I had heard only in passing during family dinners.

The powerful businessman everyone described as ruthless but brilliant.

The man who built the empire Brandon inherited.

The man Emily believed had uncovered the truth.

“Dad…”

Emily’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

She was staring at the paper like it was something dangerous.

“Who sent this?””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“But you know the name.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Detective Mitchell took the paper carefully.

“Where did this come from?””

“The nurse brought it.””

He looked toward the door.

“Did you see who delivered it?””

The nurse, who was still standing nearby, shook her head.

“No. It was left at the front desk.””

Detective Mitchell examined the envelope.

“No fingerprints we can use immediately.””

Emily looked terrified.

“Brandon knows.””

I turned toward her.

“How?””

“Because Richard wouldn’t send this unless he knew I had the documents.””

I sat down beside her.

“Emily, slow down.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Detective Mitchell.

Then at me.

And finally whispered the words she had been holding back for months.

“Richard Vale wasn’t just Brandon’s father.””

The room went quiet.

“He was the only person Brandon was afraid of.””

I leaned forward.

“What happened between them?””

Emily stared at the floor.

“When I first married Brandon, Richard was still running everything.””

She took a slow breath.

“He wasn’t warm. He wasn’t kind. But he was smart.””

“Smart enough to know what his son was doing?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“That’s what scared Brandon.””

Detective Mitchell opened his notebook again.

“Tell me everything.””

Emily nodded.

“Brandon wanted control. Not just over money.””

She paused.

“Over people.””

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

“He hated that his father still had the final say.””

“What did Richard do?””

“He refused to hand everything over.””

“And then?””

Emily looked at the paper.

“Then Richard vanished.””

I frowned.

“Was there an investigation?””

She shook her head.

“Not a serious one.””

“Why?””

“Because Brandon told everyone Richard left willingly.””

Detective Mitchell looked up.

“And you believed he was alive?””

Emily hesitated.

“At first, no.””

The room felt colder.

“Then one night, I found something.””

“What?””

“A hidden file.””

Her voice dropped.

“Inside Brandon’s office.””

“What was in it?””

Emily looked at me.

“Payments.””

My expression changed.

“To who?””

“People who helped him.””

Detective Mitchell leaned closer.

“Do you know who?””

“Lawyers. Accountants. Security people.””

She swallowed.

“And someone named Marcus Hale.””

The detective immediately stopped writing.

“You know that name?””

Emily looked surprised.

“No.””

But Detective Mitchell did.

“Marcus Hale was Richard Vale’s personal security chief for almost fifteen years.””

“What happened to him?”” I asked.

Detective Mitchell’s face became serious.

“He disappeared around the same time Richard did.””

A terrible silence followed.

Two missing people.

One son who benefited from both disappearances.

I felt something heavy settle in my chest.

This was bigger than domestic violence.

Bigger than a family argument.

Brandon wasn’t just a cruel husband.

He had been building something.

A system.

A way to remove anyone who stood against him.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

Emily’s face went pale.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at the screen.

“Why?””

“Because he wants to know what we know.””

Detective Mitchell nodded.

“Put it on speaker.””

I answered.

For three seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice spoke.

An older man.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Martin Carter.””

I froze.

“Yes?””

“I’m glad you finally learned the truth.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“Richard?””

The voice paused.

“Emily.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Are you alive?””

“Yes.””

The word hit the room.

Alive.

Detective Mitchell immediately started recording.

“Where are you?””

Richard ignored the question.

“Emily, listen carefully. Brandon knows you copied the documents.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I thought you were gone.””

“I wanted him to think that.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Mr. Vale, where have you been?””

A long pause.

Then he answered.

“Surviving.””

The word carried years of exhaustion.

“Brandon tried to destroy everything I built.””

Richard continued.

“He believed removing me meant he would inherit power without consequences.””

Emily’s voice shook.

“He hurt me because of those documents.””

“I know.””

“You knew?””

Silence.

Then Richard spoke softly.

“I tried to warn you.””

Emily looked confused.

“When?””

“Before your wedding.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“I sent messages. Letters.””

She shook her head.

“I never received anything.””

Richard’s voice became darker.

“Because Brandon intercepted them.””

I stood.

The pieces started connecting.

The isolation.

The control.

The fear.

Brandon had not just trapped Emily physically.

He had trapped her from everyone who could help.

Richard continued.

“Martin, you need to get Emily away from that house.””

“She’s already safe.””

“No.””

The urgency in his voice changed.

“He knows she’s alive.””

Detective Mitchell stepped closer.

“How do you know?””

Richard answered immediately.

“Because I was watching.””

The room went still.

Emily looked afraid.

“Watching?””

“Yes.””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“I installed a backup security system before I disappeared.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What did you see?””

A pause.

Then:

“Everything.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard continued.

“I saw what Brandon did.””

Emily looked down.

A mixture of relief and pain crossed her face.

“I thought nobody believed me.””

Richard’s voice softened.

“I believed you.””

Those words broke something inside her.

She covered her face and cried quietly.

I held her hand.

But my mind was somewhere else.

“Mr. Vale,” I said.

“Yes?””

“Why contact us now?””

Another pause.

A long one.

Then Richard answered.

“Because Brandon is no longer trying to hide.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he has moved to the final stage.””

Detective Mitchell looked at me.

“What final stage?””

Richard’s voice became almost a whisper.

“The stage where he removes every person who can expose him.””

A chill went through the room.

Emily looked at me.

“Dad…”

Richard continued.

“And Martin?””

“Yes?””

“You need to check your company records.””

“Why?””

“Because Brandon didn’t just target my family.””

The line crackled.

“He targeted yours too.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Detective Mitchell.

Then at Emily.

My daughter’s life had been falling apart around her.

But now I realized something much worse.

While I was trying to save her from Brandon…

Brandon had already been reaching for me.

That night, after Emily finally fell asleep, I returned home.

I needed answers.

I opened my office computer and accessed the company records.

For years, I had trusted my managers.

I trusted the people I hired.

I trusted the systems I built.

Until I saw the first irregular transaction.

Then the second.

Then the third.

All connected to the same company.

A company created six months before Emily married Brandon.

My hands went cold.

Because the ownership records showed something impossible.

The company wasn’t just linked to Brandon.

It was linked to someone using my name.

Someone who had been quietly moving my assets.

And at the bottom of the document was the approval signature.

Not mine.

Not forged.

A real signature.

One I recognized instantly.

Because I had seen it thousands of times.

May you like

It belonged to my daughter.

Emily.
