Chapter 8: The Secret Megan Thought Daniel Was Hiding

I stared at Claire, waiting for her to explain.

She looked as though she wished she could take back every word she'd said.

“What did Megan think Daniel was hiding?”” I asked.

Claire shook her head.

“She never gave me a clear answer.””

“But you said she told you she'd asked him to make a choice.””

“Yes.””

“What choice?””

Claire took a breath.

“She said he had to decide whether he was going to keep protecting you or finally be honest about what he wanted.””

My hands began to tremble.

“Protecting me from what?””

“I don't know.””

I looked through the restaurant window.

Megan was still outside, speaking to Ryan with increasingly frantic gestures.

Daniel stood a few feet away from them, his head bowed.

I had never felt so far from my own life.

The man I loved was standing outside a restaurant while my best friend accused him of hiding feelings he claimed not to have.

And I was inside, asking a woman who barely knew me to explain the private conversations that had apparently shaped the last several months of my marriage.

I took a slow breath.

“Claire, why did you agree to come tonight if you knew Megan was planning something?””

She looked down.

“Because I thought she was finally going to tell you what had been happening.””

“What had been happening?””

“She told me she and Daniel had been having conversations that you didn't know about. She said he had confided in her about problems in your marriage, and she thought you deserved to know.””

I felt sick.

“She made it sound as though he was preparing to leave me?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“She suggested he was unhappy and afraid to tell you.””

“But you didn't know whether that was true.””

“No.””

“Did you ask Daniel?””

“No. I thought it was better not to interfere until I understood what was happening.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

Megan had managed to make a private issue into a public spectacle before anyone had established whether her claims were true.

She had given Claire enough information to make her suspicious.

She had given Ryan enough reasons to doubt her.

And she had given Daniel enough warnings to make him afraid of what might happen if he spoke.

But the most painful part was that she'd given me nothing.

She'd allowed me to walk into that restaurant believing I was surrounded by friends.

Then she'd made me the center of a scene I hadn't chosen.

“Did she tell you what she wanted Daniel to say tonight?”” I asked.

Claire shook her head.

“She said she wanted him to stop pretending.””

I looked at her.

“Those were her exact words?””

“Yes.””

A strange sense of recognition moved through me.

I'd heard the same phrase from Daniel.

He'd told me Megan had said something about him stopping pretending.

She had used the words with him before the dinner.

She had repeated them to Claire.

And now, after everything that had happened, I was beginning to understand that the phrase had become a weapon.

Megan wanted everyone to believe Daniel was hiding something.

If he denied it, she could accuse him of lying.

If he hesitated, she could claim his silence proved her suspicions.

And if I became upset, she could use my reaction as evidence that I was controlling or insecure.

It was a trap with no good answer.

I looked at Claire.

“Did you believe her?””

She took a long breath.

“At first, yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why?””

“Because she sounded certain. She told me she'd known you for twelve years and that she understood your relationship better than anyone else.””

I felt a bitter ache in my chest.

“She said that?””

Claire nodded.

“She told me you'd been struggling for a long time, and that Daniel had been looking for someone who understood him.””

I looked away.

Megan had always known how to make herself sound indispensable.

She had positioned herself as the person who understood me when Daniel didn't.

Now, apparently, she had positioned herself as the person who understood Daniel when I didn't.

She had inserted herself into both sides of our marriage until she could make herself seem like the only person who truly understood either of us.

“Did she tell you she wanted him?”” I asked.

Claire was quiet for a moment.

“Not directly. But I started to suspect it.””

“What made you suspect it?””

“The way she talked about him. The way she described his marriage. She always seemed to know exactly what he was feeling, even when he hadn't told her.””

Claire paused.

“And she seemed angry whenever he mentioned you positively.””

My chest tightened.

“Angry?””

“She once told me that you didn't deserve how patient he was with you.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

“A few weeks ago.””

I remembered that period.

I'd been working late, and Daniel had been taking on more household responsibilities.

I'd told Megan I felt guilty about not having enough time for him.

She had assured me that he understood.

She'd even told me that he loved me more than I realized.

Now I wondered whether she'd been saying one thing to me while saying the opposite to others.

“Did you ever challenge her?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“She said I was taking your side because I didn't understand the situation.””

Claire shook her head.

“She told me that if I knew everything, I'd understand why she had to intervene.””

The word struck me.

Intervene.

Not help.

Not support.

Intervene.

As if my marriage were a situation she had the right to manage.

I looked down at my hands.

“Did she tell you what she planned to do tonight?””

Claire hesitated.

“She said she wanted Daniel to make a public statement.””

My head lifted.

“What kind of statement?””

“She didn't say exactly. But she told me that if he kept refusing to be honest, she'd force the issue.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“By sitting on his lap?””

Claire looked miserable.

“I didn't know that was what she meant.””

I believed her.

Not because I trusted her completely, but because her expression looked different from Megan's.

Claire wasn't trying to win an argument.

She was trying to understand how she'd become part of something so ugly.

I looked toward the window again.

Ryan had stepped away from Megan.

He was standing alone near the entrance, looking down at his phone.

Daniel had moved closer to him.

Megan remained between them, her arms folded tightly across her chest.

I knew I needed to speak to Daniel.

Not because I was ready to forgive him.

Because I needed to hear his account without Megan's version hanging over every word.

I thanked Claire and walked outside.

Daniel turned when he saw me.

“Can we talk?”” I asked.

He nodded immediately.

We moved a short distance away from the others.

For several seconds, I couldn't find the words.

Finally, I asked, “What did Megan want you to confess?””

Daniel stared at me.

“I don't know.””

“Claire says she gave you until tonight to make a choice.””

His face changed.

“She told you that?””

“She told me enough to know that you've been hiding more than one conversation.””

He looked down.

“I didn't know she was telling people that.””

“Then what did you think she wanted?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“She kept asking me whether I was happy with you.””

“And you told her yes.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

“She said I was afraid to admit the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That I sometimes felt trapped.””

The words hit me harder than anything else he'd said.

I stepped backward.

“Trapped?””

Daniel immediately reached for me.

“Please, let me explain.””

I held up my hand.

“Don't touch me right now.””

He stopped.

“I didn't mean trapped by you.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He swallowed.

“She asked me whether I ever felt like marriage had changed my life. Whether I missed being able to make decisions without considering someone else.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone who is married has to consider another person.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you tell her you felt trapped?””

“I didn't say I felt trapped by our marriage. I said I sometimes felt overwhelmed by responsibilities.””

I struggled to breathe.

He continued quickly.

“I was talking about work. Bills. Family obligations.

Everything that piles up when you're trying to build a life together. I told her there were days when I felt exhausted.””

“And she turned that into something else.””

“Yes.””

I wanted to believe him.

But I couldn't ignore the fact that he had repeatedly chosen to discuss our marriage with Megan rather than with me.

“Why didn't you come to me?”” I asked.

His eyes filled.

“Because I didn't want to worry you.””

“I'm your wife, Daniel. I'm supposed to know when you're struggling.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe everything was fine while telling Megan how overwhelmed you were.””

“I didn't tell her everything.””

“But you told her enough to make her think she understood our marriage better than I did.””

He looked away.

That silence was answer enough.

I took a shaky breath.

“Did you ever tell her you wanted to leave me?””

“No.””

“Did you ever tell her you wished you'd married her instead?””

“No.””

“Did you ever tell her you had feelings for her?””

“No.””

He answered each question with increasing urgency.

But I needed more than denials.

“Then why did she believe you might choose her?””

Daniel's face tightened.

“I think she wanted me to.””

“That isn't an answer.””

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he admitted something I hadn't expected.

“Once, when we were talking, she asked me what I would do if you and I ever separated.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you say?””

“I told her I didn't want to think about that.””

“And?””

“She said she would always be there for me.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The offer he'd mentioned outside the restaurant.

The promise that she would take him in if we ever divorced.

“What did you say to her?””

“I told her I wasn't interested in discussing a future without you.””

“Did you tell me about it?””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked devastated.

“Because I thought it was a stupid conversation, and I didn't want to upset you.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that as if hiding something makes it harmless.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. You don't. Because if you did, you would have told me the first time she crossed that line.””

He lowered his head.

I felt tears slipping down my cheeks, but I didn't wipe them away.

I was tired of trying to make this easier for everyone else.

“Do you understand what she did tonight?”” I asked.

He nodded.

“She wanted to make you choose in front of everyone.””

“Yes.””

“And you let her.””

His face crumpled.

“I froze.””

“You had a choice.””

“I know.””

“You could have stood up. You could have told her no. You could have made it clear that she wasn't entitled to your attention.””

He whispered, “I'm sorry.””

I looked at him.

“I don't need another apology right now. I need to know whether you understand why this has changed how I see you.””

He nodded slowly.

“I do.””

For the first time, I believed that he might.

Not because he'd said the right words.

Because he finally stopped trying to defend his intentions and began acknowledging the consequences.

But the conversation wasn't over.

I still needed to know why Megan had been so certain that Daniel was hiding something.

I turned toward the restaurant.

Megan was watching us through the window.

Her expression was unreadable.

Then her phone lit up.

She looked down at it, and her face changed.

She glanced at Ryan.

Then at me.

And suddenly, she hurried toward the door.

“What's happening?”” I asked.

Daniel followed my gaze.

“I don't know.””

Megan stepped outside, clutching her phone.

“Ryan,” she said urgently.

“We need to talk.””

He looked at her.

“About what?””

She held up the phone.

“About the message you saw.””

Ryan shook his head.

“I've heard enough.””

“No, you haven't!””

Her voice cracked.

“You don't know what really happened.””

Ryan's expression hardened.

“Then tell us.””

Megan looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

For a moment, I thought she might finally confess everything.

Instead, she said, “Daniel promised me something.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Megan's eyes filled with tears.

“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””

He shook his head.

“No, I don't.””

She took a trembling breath.

“Last year, you told me that if things ever got bad enough between you and your wife, you would talk to me first.””

Daniel went completely still.

I looked at him.

He didn't deny it immediately.

And in that brief silence, I felt every remaining piece of certainty begin to crumble.

Because Megan wasn't talking about a vague conversation anymore.

May you like

She was talking about a promise.

And whatever Daniel had said to her last year, it was something he had never told me.
