Chapter 3: The Words She Whispered Before She Sat Down

“Please don't.””

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

But I heard him.

So did the woman standing beside me.

She looked at him with an expression that shifted from nervousness to disbelief.

“Why would you say that?”” she asked.

Daniel opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

I felt something cold settle inside me.

Until that moment, a small part of me had still been searching for an explanation that would allow everything to return to normal.

Maybe Megan had crossed a line without thinking.

Maybe Daniel had frozen because he was embarrassed.

Maybe the confession about divorce had been an unfortunate joke that had grown more uncomfortable over time.

But Daniel's reaction to this woman's words destroyed the last of those possibilities.

He wasn't afraid of what she might invent.

He was afraid of what she might repeat.

I turned toward him.

“Do you know what she's going to say?””

He shook his head too quickly.

“No.””

The woman stared at him.

“Daniel, I was sitting right beside you.””

He looked away.

She took another breath and faced me.

“My name is Claire, and I know this probably isn't my place.””

“Please,” I said.

“Just tell me what you heard.””

Claire glanced through the window.

Megan was standing near the table, speaking animatedly to another guest. Her purse rested on the chair beside her, and she appeared to be explaining something with exaggerated hand gestures.

From the sidewalk, she looked perfectly composed.

Almost offended.

Like someone who had been unfairly accused of doing something harmless.

Claire lowered her voice.

“Before she sat on Daniel's lap, Megan leaned toward him. She said something quietly, and he stopped laughing for a second.””

I remembered the moment I had walked into the restaurant.

Daniel's face had gone pale almost immediately.

At the time, I'd assumed it was because he'd realized how inappropriate the situation looked.

Now I wasn't so sure.

“What exactly did she say?”” I asked.

Claire pressed her lips together.

“I couldn't hear every word at first. There was music playing, and people were talking. But I was close enough to hear the end.””

“What end?””

Claire looked at Daniel again.

He was staring at the pavement.

“She told him that tonight was the night he needed to stop pretending.””

My throat tightened.

“Pretending what?””

“I don't know. But then she said something about you.””

The cold air suddenly felt too thin to breathe.

“What did she say about me?””

Claire hesitated.

“I heard her say that you would never suspect anything because you trusted her too much.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I could hear the faint clatter of dishes from inside the restaurant.

Somewhere down the street, a car horn sounded.

The world continued as though mine hadn't just begun to fall apart.

I turned to Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know what she meant.””

Claire's expression hardened.

“You looked at her when she said it.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I was trying to understand what she was talking about.””

“And then she climbed onto your lap,” Claire replied.

He said nothing.

I felt the last fragile thread of my patience begin to snap.

“Daniel, I need you to tell me the truth. Not the version that makes you look less guilty. Not the version you think I can handle. The truth.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I didn't know she was going to do that.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“I know.””

“Then answer me.””

He looked at me, and for the first time that evening, I saw something beyond embarrassment in his eyes.

Fear.

“I thought she was trying to provoke you,” he admitted.

The words landed like a slap.

“Why?””

“Because of the things she'd been saying.””

“What things?””

He glanced at Claire.

She folded her arms.

“I'm already involved now,” she said.

“Whatever this is, she deserves to know.””

Daniel looked miserable.

“She'd been telling me that you were becoming distant. That you didn't appreciate me. That you were unhappy with our marriage.””

I stared at him.

Megan had told me almost the opposite.

She had said Daniel was lucky to have me.

She had praised how patient I was with him.

Whenever I complained about work or household responsibilities, she had assured me that every marriage had difficult seasons.

I had thought she was supporting me.

Now I wondered whether she had been telling each of us a different story.

“She told you I was unhappy?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

“And what did you tell her?””

“That she was wrong.””

“Did you tell her I loved you?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell her you loved me?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened next?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She said that maybe we were both too afraid to admit what we really wanted.””

I felt sick.

“And you didn't think to mention any of this to me?””

“I didn't want to give her comments more importance than they deserved.””

I looked at Claire.

She seemed just as unsettled as I felt.

“Did you hear anything else?”” I asked her.

Claire nodded slowly.

“She said, 'If she reacts, everyone will finally see what she's really like.''”

I frowned.

“What?””

“That was the part I heard clearly. Megan said it just before she moved toward him.””

I tried to fit the words together.

If she reacts.

Everyone will finally see what she's really like.

It sounded less like flirting and more like a plan.

Megan hadn't merely sat on my husband's lap and hoped I wouldn't mind.

She had apparently expected me to react.

Perhaps she'd wanted me to look jealous.

Perhaps she'd wanted me to embarrass myself in front of our friends.

But why?

And why Daniel?

I looked through the window again.

Megan had taken her seat, but Ryan remained standing beside the table.

He was speaking to her now.

Even through the glass, I could see that his expression was tense.

Megan waved one hand dismissively.

Ryan said something else.

Then he sat down, looking more exhausted than before.

A terrible thought crept into my mind.

What if this wasn't the first time Megan had tried to create a situation like this?

What if Ryan's expression had nothing to do with tonight?

What if he had been watching a familiar pattern unfold?

“Claire,” I asked, “has Megan ever acted like this before?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“With Daniel?””

“With anyone.””

Claire hesitated long enough to answer without speaking.

“I've seen her make jokes about other people's relationships,” she said finally.

“She likes getting reactions. Sometimes she says things that make people uncomfortable, then acts as if they're being dramatic when they object.””

I nodded slowly.

That sounded like the Megan I had occasionally defended without examining too closely.

The Megan who could make a cutting remark and then laugh until everyone assumed it was harmless.

The Megan who once told another friend that her boyfriend would be better off with someone more attractive, then accused that friend of lacking a sense of humor when she got upset.

I'd brushed it off.

I'd told myself Megan was blunt.

I'd told myself she never meant any harm.

I'd told myself twelve years of friendship had to count for something.

Now I wondered whether loyalty had become an excuse for ignoring what was directly in front of me.

My phone vibrated again.

Another message from Megan.

You owe me an apology.

I stared at the screen.

A second message followed.

You humiliated me in front of everyone.

Then a third.

Ryan is upset because you dragged him into your jealousy.

I looked at the restaurant window.

Megan was now speaking to Ryan with an animated expression, while he sat completely still.

She was already shifting the blame.

Again.

I put my phone away without answering.

Claire touched my arm gently.

“There's something else.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She glanced at Daniel.

“I don't think Megan expected you to say you'd sit on Ryan's lap.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

“She looked genuinely shocked when you said it. But before that, she seemed very confident. Almost as if she'd decided exactly how the evening was going to go.””

I thought about the smirk.

The way Megan had tightened her arm around Daniel when she saw me.

The sudden panic when I suggested doing the same thing to her husband.

And her furious insistence that I was the one creating drama.

It had all happened so quickly.

But now the pieces were beginning to look less like a spontaneous joke and more like a carefully chosen moment.

I turned back to Daniel.

“Did she tell you to keep something from me?””

He didn't answer.

My heart began to pound.

“Daniel.””

He stared at the ground.

“Did she?””

Finally, he whispered, “She told me not to tell you about our conversations because you'd misunderstand them.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Our conversations?””

He nodded.

“How many?””

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“Several.””

The word was almost too small to contain what it meant.

Several conversations.

Several opportunities to tell me.

Several times he had listened to my best friend discuss our marriage while keeping me completely unaware.

I took a step backward.

“Were you meeting her alone?””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Not like that.””

I stared at him.

“That's not an answer.””

He rubbed his hands together, trembling again.

“Sometimes we'd end up talking when you weren't around. At group events. A few times after everyone else had left.””

“And you never thought that was something I should know?””

“I didn't think it meant anything.””

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.

“Did you ever encourage her?””

“No.””

“Did you ever tell her you wanted to be with her?””

“Never.””

“Did you ever give her a reason to believe she had a chance?””

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

That hesitation cut deeper than anything he had said so far.

I stared at him, unable to recognize the man standing in front of me.

Claire quietly stepped away, giving us space.

For the first time that night, I didn't want to ask another question.

I wanted to go home.

I wanted to sit somewhere quiet and examine every conversation, every memory, every moment when Megan had been alone with us and I had trusted her without a second thought.

But as I turned toward the street, Claire spoke again.

“There's one more thing I heard.””

I stopped.

She looked frightened now, as though she regretted becoming involved but knew she couldn't leave the truth unfinished.

“When Megan leaned toward Daniel, she mentioned Ryan, too.””

I slowly turned around.

“What did she say about her husband?””

Claire glanced toward the restaurant.

Then she looked directly at me.

“She said Ryan wouldn't interfere this time.””

My breath caught.

This time.

Two words.

Two words that made Ryan's exhausted expression suddenly seem far more important than I'd realized.

I looked through the window at him.

He was no longer watching Megan.

He was looking straight at us.

And when our eyes met, he rose from his chair.

Not angrily.

Not hurriedly.

With the grim determination of someone who had finally decided he couldn't stay silent anymore.

He picked up his jacket.

Megan grabbed his wrist.

Even through the glass, I could see her mouth form the same two words over and over.

Don't you dare.

Ryan gently pulled his hand free.

Then he walked toward the exit.

Daniel whispered my name, but I barely heard him.

Because as Ryan approached the door, I realized something that frightened me more than Megan sitting on my husband's lap.

Ryan hadn't looked surprised when it happened.

He had looked exhausted.

As if he already knew what Megan was capable of.

May you like

And as the door opened and he stepped into the cold night, he looked at me with an expression that told me he wasn't coming outside to defend his wife.

He was coming to tell me what she had been doing all along.
