Chapter 7: The Message Was Meant for Someone I Trusted
The name at the top of Ryan's phone made my stomach twist.
It belonged to Claire.
The same woman who had rushed outside to tell me what Megan whispered before climbing onto Daniel's lap.
For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing.
Claire had looked genuinely frightened when she approached me.
She had warned me that Megan's behavior wasn't innocent.
She had even challenged Daniel when he tried to stop her from speaking.
Why would Megan have been messaging her before the dinner?
I looked at Ryan.
“Why was Megan texting Claire?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I don't know. I only saw the message because it appeared on Megan's phone while she was getting ready.””
Megan stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Ryan held the phone away from her.
“No.””
“You have no right to show people my private messages!””
“You seemed perfectly comfortable discussing someone else's marriage in private.””
“That is not the same thing!””
“Then explain the difference.””
Megan's face flushed.
She looked at Daniel, clearly hoping he would intervene.
He didn't.
Instead, he moved closer to me.
“Let her read it,” he said quietly.
Megan stared at him as though he had betrayed her.
I took the phone from Ryan.
The message was short.
It had been sent earlier that evening, before any of us arrived at the restaurant.
Tonight, I need you to watch what happens when she finally sees it for herself.
A second message followed.
If she reacts the way I think she will, everyone will understand why I've been keeping my distance.
I read the words twice.
Keeping my distance.
From whom?
Me?
Daniel?
Both of us?
I scrolled down, hoping for context.
There were no additional messages visible.
“What does this mean?”” I asked.
Ryan looked at Megan.
“That's what I'd like to know.””
Megan crossed her arms.
“It's being taken out of context.””
“Then give us the context,” I replied.
She shook her head.
“I was talking about a personal issue.””
“With Claire?””
“Yes.””
“What personal issue?””
“Something that doesn't concern you.””
I almost laughed.
After everything that had happened, she was still trying to decide which parts of the truth I was allowed to know.
“Your personal issue apparently involved my husband, my marriage, and a public scene you arranged in front of thirty guests,” I said.
“I think I've earned an explanation.””
Megan looked away.
Ryan's voice softened, but his expression remained firm.
“Tell her what you told me last week.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because you don't understand.””
“Then help us understand.””
Megan looked at me with tears gathering in her eyes.
“I didn't plan for everything to happen like this.””
“Like what?”” I asked.
“Everyone turning against me.””
The answer was so revealing that I stood completely still.
She wasn't upset that she had hurt me.
She was upset that people had noticed.
I handed the phone back to Ryan.
“Why did you want Claire to watch what happened?””
Megan pressed her lips together.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“I thought she might be able to explain something to you.””
Daniel frowned.
“Explain what?””
“That you've been unhappy.””
He stared at her.
“I told you I wasn't.””
“You said you were happy because you didn't want to hurt her.””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“I said I was happy because I am.””
Megan's expression crumpled.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.
Then she continued.
“You don't understand what it's like to spend years feeling like the person you love belongs somewhere else.””
Ryan's face hardened.
“You're talking about Daniel again.””
“I'm talking about how I feel!””
“And what about how everyone else feels?””
She turned toward him.
“You've never cared how I feel.””
Ryan looked stunned.
Then he let out a quiet, exhausted laugh.
“I've spent years trying to understand you. I've listened when you told me you were unhappy. I've asked what we could change.
I've suggested counseling. I've tried to make time for us.””
He paused.
“But every time I asked what you wanted, you brought up someone else's life.””
Megan's eyes filled.
“That's not fair.””
“Maybe not. But it's true.””
He took a breath.
“You've compared our marriage to theirs for years. You talk about how Daniel treats her, how they travel, how he supports her. You never ask what we could build together. You only talk about what you think someone else has.””
Megan looked at me.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why did you ask Claire to watch?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation was enough to make me feel cold all over again.
Finally, she whispered, “Because I needed someone to see it.””
“See what?””
“That he wasn't going to choose me.””
The words came out so quietly that nobody moved.
Daniel looked horrified.
Ryan closed his eyes.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Megan wiped her face and continued speaking, as if admitting the truth had broken something she could no longer repair.
“I thought if he had to choose in front of everyone, I would finally know.””
“You already knew,” I said.
She shook her head.
“No. I thought he might be afraid to admit it.””
“Admit what? That he wanted you?””
She didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Megan, I have never told you I wanted to leave my wife.””
“I know.””
“I have never told you I wanted a relationship with you.””
“I know.””
“Then what were you trying to prove?””
Her face crumpled.
“That I mattered.””
For the first time, I heard something in her voice that wasn't anger or defensiveness.
It was desperation.
And for one brief moment, I saw the woman I'd known for twelve years beneath the behavior I couldn't understand.
But her pain didn't erase mine.
“You mattered to me,” I said quietly.
“You were my best friend.””
She looked at me.
“I still am.””
I shook my head.
“I don't know who you are right now.””
She began to cry.
Not the controlled tears she'd wiped away earlier.
These were messy, desperate sobs that seemed to come from somewhere deep inside her.
“I never meant for you to find out like this.””
I stared at her.
“Find out what?””
She covered her face.
Ryan spoke before she could answer.
“That she's been talking to Claire about you for weeks.””
Megan dropped her hands.
“Ryan!””
He ignored her.
“She told Claire that you were becoming suspicious of her friendship with Daniel. She said you might eventually confront him, and she wanted Claire there to see how you reacted.””
My stomach twisted.
I turned toward the restaurant.
Claire was visible through the window, standing beside the table with her phone in her hand.
She had known Megan was expecting something to happen.
But had she known what?
“Did Claire know you were planning to sit on Daniel's lap?”” I asked.
Megan shook her head.
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
“I told her I was going to confront something that had been bothering me.””
“And you didn't tell her what?””
“That I was going to sit on Daniel.””
I looked at Ryan.
He appeared just as troubled as I felt.
“So Claire thought she was coming to witness a confrontation,” I said slowly.
“Not a test.””
Megan didn't respond.
That was when the pieces began to fit together.
Megan had wanted witnesses.
She had wanted someone to see me react.
But she hadn't told everyone the same story.
She'd told Daniel that our conversations were harmless.
She'd told Ryan that she was tired of being unhappy.
She'd told Claire that something needed to be exposed.
And she had counted on me reacting in a way that would make her look justified.
I turned back to her.
“What exactly did you tell Claire about me?””
Megan wiped her cheeks.
“That you were controlling.””
My throat tightened.
“Controlling?””
“That you always needed to know where Daniel was. That you didn't like him spending time with other women. That you were afraid he would leave you.””
I stared at her.
She had taken ordinary conversations about trust and turned them into evidence against me.
There had been one occasion when Daniel had forgotten to tell me he was staying late at work.
I'd been worried because he wasn't answering his phone.
I had told Megan about it.
She'd reassured me that I had every right to expect communication in a marriage.
Apparently, she'd told Claire a different version.
“You made me sound unstable,” I whispered.
“I didn't mean it that way.””
“But you said it.””
Megan looked down.
“Yes.””
I felt something inside me break—not loudly, not dramatically, but with the quiet finality of a door closing.
I had spent years trusting her with the parts of myself I was most afraid to show anyone.
And she'd used those fears to build a version of me that suited her.
Daniel reached for my hand.
I let him touch my fingers, but I couldn't bring myself to hold on.
“I need to talk to Claire,” I said.
Megan's head snapped up.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because she'll make everything worse.””
“Or she'll tell me what happened.””
“You don't know her.””
I almost smiled.
“You've spent twelve years telling me I know you.””
Megan went silent.
I turned toward the restaurant entrance.
Daniel started to follow me, but I stopped him.
“Not yet.””
He nodded, his eyes filled with regret.
I walked back inside alone.
The birthday dinner had nearly fallen apart.
Several guests had left, and the remaining people were speaking in hushed voices.
Claire stood beside the table, looking as though she had been waiting for me.
When she saw me approach, she put her phone away.
“I owe you the whole truth,” she said.
I stopped in front of her.
“Yes,” I replied.
“You do.””
She looked toward the window, where Megan stood beside Ryan.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Megan told me she was going to expose something tonight.””
“What?””
Claire swallowed.
“She said Daniel had been hiding his real feelings from you.””
My chest tightened.
“Did she say he wanted to be with her?””
“Not directly.””
“What did she say?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she whispered, “She told me she'd already asked him to make a choice.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“Earlier this week.””
The room seemed to go silent around us.
“What choice?””
Claire's eyes filled with sympathy.
“She said she'd given Daniel until tonight to tell you the truth.””
I felt my heart pound.
“What truth?””
Claire looked down.
“I don't know. But she told me that if he refused, she would make sure you found out another way.””
I couldn't speak.
Because suddenly, the question wasn't why Megan had sat on Daniel's lap.
May you like
The question was what she believed Daniel had been hiding.
And why she'd given him until tonight to confess it.
