Chapter 6: The Question Daniel Could No Longer Avoid

Nobody moved after Megan spoke.

The words seemed to hang in the cold air between us.

You don't understand what it's like to want something you can't have.

I stared at her, waiting for her to take them back.

She didn't.

Instead, she wiped her cheeks, lifted her chin, and looked at Daniel as if he were the only person whose response mattered.

“Say something,” she demanded.

Daniel looked at her in disbelief.

“What do you want me to say?””

“That this isn't what I meant.””

“You just said you wanted something you couldn't have.””

“I was talking about my life!””

“You mentioned choosing me.””

Her face twisted.

“Because you understand me!””

Daniel shook his head.

“I understand that you're unhappy. That doesn't mean I'm responsible for fixing it.””

Megan flinched.

For a moment, I thought she might finally recognize the damage she had caused.

Then she looked at me.

“You're enjoying this.””

The accusation was so absurd that I couldn't even answer immediately.

“Enjoying what?””

“Watching everyone turn against me.””

I let out a shaky breath.

“You sat on my husband's lap in front of thirty people. You told him you wanted to know whether he'd choose you. And now you're blaming me because people are upset?””

“I never said I wanted him to choose me!””

Ryan looked at her.

“You just did.””

She turned toward him.

“Stop twisting my words!””

“No one is twisting them, Megan. We're standing here listening to you.””

She looked around at the three of us.

For the first time, I saw something close to panic replace her anger.

She had always been skilled at controlling a conversation when it involved only two people.

She could tell me something privately, then tell someone else a different version.

She could explain away a cutting remark before the person she'd insulted had time to respond.

But now there were too many witnesses.

Too many people who had heard her contradict herself.

She couldn't control all of us at once.

And she knew it.

I turned to Daniel.

“I need to ask you something.””

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

“Did you ever consider leaving me?””

His eyes widened.

“No.””

“Did Megan ever make you think about it?””

He hesitated.

I felt my stomach drop.

“Daniel.””

He rubbed his hands over his face.

“Not in the way you're thinking.””

“Then tell me what you mean.””

He glanced at Megan.

She was watching him with an intensity that made my skin crawl.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Sometimes, when we'd talk, she'd ask me whether I thought our marriage was as strong as it used to be.””

I remained silent.

“She'd ask whether I missed being single. Whether I ever wondered what my life might have been like if I'd married someone else.””

“And what did you say?””

“I told her I didn't think about that.””

“Every time?””

He looked down.

“Most of the time.””

The qualification hurt more than I expected.

“What happened the other times?””

He swallowed.

“Once, after we'd had an argument, I told her I was frustrated.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“You told Megan about our argument?””

“She asked why I seemed upset.””

“And you told her?””

“Yes.””

“What did you say?””

“That we were arguing about work and responsibilities. That I felt overwhelmed.””

I stared at him.

Those were the same things I'd discussed with Megan.

I'd told her I was struggling to balance work with everything else in our lives.

I'd admitted that I sometimes wished Daniel would notice when I was exhausted without needing me to explain it.

I'd trusted her with those feelings because I believed she wanted to help.

Now I realized that she might have been collecting both sides of our frustrations and using them to build a story neither of us had agreed to tell.

“What did she say to you?”” I asked.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“She said maybe you weren't the right person for me.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I thought it was a terrible thing to say. I told her she didn't know what she was talking about.””

“But you kept talking to her.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked genuinely ashamed.

“Because I thought I could handle it without making it a bigger problem.””

I shook my head.

“You don't get to decide that something involving my marriage isn't my problem.””

“I know.””

“No, I don't think you do.””

My voice trembled.

“I have spent twelve years believing that Megan was someone I could trust. When something went wrong between us, I went to her because I thought she was on my side. And while I was telling her how I felt, she was apparently telling you that I wasn't right for you.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I should have shut it down.””

“Yes.””

“I should have stood up when she sat on me.””

I looked at him.

“Yes, Daniel. You should have.””

He nodded, accepting every word.

For the first time, I didn't feel the need to soften my response to protect his feelings.

I wasn't interested in making him feel better.

I wanted to know whether the man I'd married understood why his silence had hurt me.

Megan suddenly stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. You're making him sound like he cheated on you.””

I turned toward her.

“I'm not asking him whether he cheated. I'm asking him why he allowed you to cross a boundary and why he kept your conversations secret.””

“Because he knew you'd react like this!””

The words escaped her before she could stop them.

Everyone went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

I felt my heartbeat pounding in my ears.

“What did you just say?””

Megan's face changed.

“I meant—”

“You said he knew I'd react like this. React to what, Megan?””

She looked away.

Ryan let out a slow, bitter laugh.

“There it is.””

Megan spun toward him.

“Don't you dare.””

“No. I'm done with that.””

He stepped closer, his voice shaking for the first time.

“You've spent months telling me that everyone else is the problem. That I'm insecure. That she's jealous.

That Daniel is too afraid to admit what he wants. Every time someone questions you, you make them feel guilty for asking.””

Megan stared at him.

Ryan continued.

“And now you're telling us that Daniel kept things from his wife because he was afraid of her reaction. You're using her feelings to excuse your own behavior.””

“I never asked him to keep anything secret!””

Daniel looked up.

“You told me not to tell her.””

Megan's mouth fell open.

“I said she might misunderstand!””

“You said not to tell her.””

“I was trying to avoid drama!””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. You were trying to control what she knew.””

For a moment, Megan looked almost frightened of him.

Then she turned to me.

“You have to understand. I never intended to hurt you.””

I looked at her for a long time.

I wanted those words to matter.

I wanted to believe that beneath the jealousy, the secrecy, and the deliberate humiliation, there was still the friend who had held my wedding dress and cried when I said my vows.

But intention wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

“If you never intended to hurt me,” I asked, “why did you smirk when you saw me standing there?””

She looked down.

“Why did you pull Daniel closer?””

Silence.

“Why did you get angry when I suggested sitting on Ryan's lap?””

Her eyes filled again.

“I don't know.””

It was the first answer she had given that sounded remotely honest.

But it wasn't enough.

I took a slow breath.

“Did you want me to see you sitting on him?””

Megan looked at me.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered, “Yes.””

Daniel stepped backward.

Ryan closed his eyes.

I felt the answer land inside me with terrible certainty.

She had wanted me to see.

She had wanted a reaction.

And she'd apparently been prepared to use that reaction to prove something.

“What did you want to happen?”” I asked.

Megan shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Yes, you do.””

She wiped her face.

“I wanted to know whether he cared.””

“Whether he cared about what?””

“About me.””

The admission was so quiet that I almost missed it.

Daniel stared at her.

“Megan, I'm married to your best friend.””

“I know!””

“Then why would you do this?””

She looked at him desperately.

“Because you never say anything!””

He frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You always act like everything is fine. You smile. You go home with her.

You tell everyone you're happy. And I wanted to know if you meant it.””

I felt sick.

“You could have asked him whether he was happy,” I said.

“He told you he was.””

Megan looked at me with a bitterness that made me take a step back.

“Because you were always there.””

For several seconds, I couldn't understand the words.

Then I did.

She resented my presence in my own marriage.

She resented that Daniel went home with me.

She resented that the life I had built was something she couldn't simply step into.

And instead of confronting those feelings, she had turned our friendship into a quiet competition.

Ryan spoke softly.

“Is that why you told me you wouldn't interfere this time?””

Megan froze.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan's face had gone pale.

He seemed to regret asking the question, but it was too late.

Megan stared at him.

“You said you didn't know what I was planning.””

“I said I didn't know exactly what you were planning.””

He took a shaky breath.

“Last week, you told me you were going to make a decision. You said you were tired of waiting for Daniel to admit what he wanted.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“I never told her I wanted anything.””

Ryan nodded.

“I believe you.””

Megan shook her head.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

No words came.

Ryan looked at me.

“I think tonight was supposed to be a test.””

“A test of what?”” I asked, even though I already feared the answer.

“To see whether Daniel would stop her. Whether he'd choose you publicly. Or whether he'd let her get away with it.””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“And if I had let her stay there?””

Ryan looked at Megan.

“Then she would have had her answer.””

Megan didn't deny it.

She didn't need to.

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked devastated.

“I didn't want any of this,” he said.

“I know you didn't plan it,” I replied.

“But you still had a choice.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“And you made the wrong one.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

For a moment, I wanted to reach for him.

Not because I had forgiven him.

Because he was my husband, and I could see how badly he wanted to undo the last hour.

But I couldn't comfort him while I was still trying to understand what his silence meant.

I stepped away.

“I need space.””

He nodded immediately.

“Okay.””

“I need you to stop trying to explain everything tonight. I need you to think about why you kept those conversations from me.””

“I will.””

“And I need to know whether there's anything else you haven't told me.””

His face tightened.

“No.””

I studied him.

“Are you sure?””

He hesitated.

Only a fraction of a second.

But I noticed.

Before I could ask another question, Ryan's phone vibrated.

He glanced at it, and the color drained from his face.

Megan noticed.

“What is it?”” she demanded.

Ryan didn't answer.

He read the message again, then looked at Daniel.

“I think you need to see this.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Ryan held out his phone.

I couldn't see the screen from where I stood.

But I watched Daniel's expression change as he read.

First confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then something that looked almost like fear.

“What is that?”” I whispered.

Daniel handed the phone back without speaking.

Ryan looked at me.

“It's a message Megan sent to someone earlier tonight.””

Megan lunged forward.

“Give me that phone!””

Ryan moved it out of reach.

“Not a chance.””

She stood frozen, breathing hard.

I looked between them.

“Who did she send it to?””

Ryan glanced at Daniel.

Then he turned the screen toward me.

At the top was a name I recognized immediately.

Beneath it was a message sent less than an hour before the birthday dinner.

And as I read the first line, I realized the evening had begun long before I walked into that restaurant.

Megan hadn't merely planned to sit on my husband's lap.

May you like

She had been preparing someone else for what she expected to happen afterward.

And the person she'd contacted was someone I never would have suspected.
