Chapter 4: Ryan Finally Told Me the Truth

Ryan stopped a few feet away from us, his jacket hanging loosely from one hand.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

He looked at me first, then at Daniel, and finally at Claire.

His expression was strangely calm, but his eyes looked exhausted.

“I owe you an explanation,” he said.

I swallowed.

“About Megan?””

He nodded.

“About Megan. And about what happened tonight.””

Daniel shifted beside me.

“Ryan, whatever you're thinking—”

“Don't.””

Ryan's voice wasn't loud, but Daniel immediately fell silent.

“I've spent a long time keeping quiet about things I should have spoken up about,” Ryan continued.

“I'm not doing that anymore.””

He looked at me again.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

I glanced toward the restaurant.

Through the window, Megan was standing beside our table, watching us. Her face had lost its earlier confidence.

She picked up her phone.

A second later, Ryan's phone vibrated in his hand.

He looked at the screen without opening the message.

Then he turned it facedown.

“She's already texting you,” I guessed.

“She's been texting me all evening.””

“What is she saying?””

“That you're embarrassing her. That you're making everything about yourself. That I need to come back inside and help her explain what happened.””

He gave a tired laugh.

“She always knows exactly what to say when she thinks someone is about to stop believing her.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“Always?””

Ryan looked away.

For twelve years, I'd thought I knew Megan.

I'd seen her impatient, stubborn, competitive, and occasionally cruel when she was angry.

But I'd never considered that those traits might be part of something more deliberate.

Ryan motioned toward a quieter section of the sidewalk, away from the restaurant entrance.

I followed him.

Daniel came with us until Ryan turned and looked directly at him.

“Not yet,” Ryan said.

Daniel stopped.

I looked between them.

“Why can't he come?””

“Because I need to tell you something without him trying to explain it for her.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“I haven't been explaining anything for her.””

Ryan gave him a look that made him fall silent again.

I followed Ryan a few more steps.

The restaurant's music became muffled behind us.

For the first time that evening, I felt as if I might finally hear something that wasn't an excuse.

Ryan took a long breath.

“Megan has been telling people that you and Daniel are having serious problems.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She says you're unhappy. That you fight constantly. That you're only staying together because neither of you wants to admit the marriage is over.””

I stared at him.

“That isn't true.””

“I know.””

“How long has she been saying this?””

“Months.””

The answer made my knees feel weak.

Months.

While I'd been inviting Megan over for dinner, asking her opinion about holiday plans, and trusting her with the most private details of my marriage, she'd apparently been telling other people that my relationship was falling apart.

“Who has she told?””

“I don't know everyone. I know she's mentioned it to several people in our circle.””

“Why?””

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“That's what I've been trying to understand.””

He paused.

“Then, a few months ago, she started talking about Daniel differently.””

I didn't want to ask.

But I did.

“Differently how?””

“She'd bring him up whenever we talked about you. She'd ask whether I thought he was happy. Whether I thought you appreciated him. Whether I thought he'd be better off with someone who understood him.””

I looked toward Daniel.

He was standing near the restaurant entrance, watching us.

He looked miserable.

But misery wasn't the same thing as innocence.

“Did she ever tell you she wanted him?”” I asked.

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“Not in those exact words.””

“What words did she use?””

“She said she understood him in a way you didn't.””

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Megan had always been the person I called when Daniel and I disagreed.

She knew about the arguments over work schedules, household responsibilities, and the times when I felt he wasn't listening.

I'd trusted her because she'd always told me she wanted our marriage to succeed.

Now I wondered whether she'd been listening to those stories for an entirely different reason.

Ryan continued.

“She told me you were too comfortable with him. That you took him for granted. She said a man could only tolerate that for so long.””

I shook my head.

“I never took Daniel for granted.””

“I know.””

“How do you know?””

Ryan looked at me with an expression that was almost painful.

“Because I've watched you take care of him. I've watched you remember the things he forgets, support him when work gets difficult, and defend him when other people criticize him.””

He paused.

“I'm not saying your marriage is perfect. Nobody's is. But Megan has been telling a very different story.””

I swallowed hard.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Ryan looked down at his hands.

“Because I thought I could handle it at home. Because every time I confronted her, she'd tell me I was being insecure. She'd say I was imagining things because I was jealous of her friendship with you.””

His voice grew quieter.

“And because I kept hoping she'd realize how much damage she was doing before I had to make a decision about our marriage.””

I understood that feeling more than I wanted to.

The desperate need to believe that someone you love is simply having a bad moment.

The desire to preserve years of shared memories rather than admit that something fundamental has changed.

I had been doing the same thing with Megan.

Ryan looked toward the restaurant.

“Tonight was different.””

“What happened?””

“Before we left home, Megan told me she wanted to make an impression at the birthday dinner.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of impression?””

“She wouldn't explain. She just said she was tired of everyone pretending things were fine.””

He let out a humorless laugh.

“I thought she meant our marriage.””

“Did you argue?””

“Yes.””

“What did you say?””

“I asked her whether this had anything to do with Daniel.””

Ryan looked directly at me.

“She told me to stop being paranoid.””

The familiar accusation made my chest tighten.

Megan had used the same word against me only minutes earlier.

Paranoid.

Jealous.

Dramatic.

Different people.

Different situations.

The same defense.

“What happened when you arrived?”” I asked.

“Nothing unusual at first. She was charming. She talked to everyone. She made jokes.””

He hesitated.

“Then she started watching Daniel.””

I glanced toward the restaurant again.

Ryan continued.

“I noticed it before dinner was halfway over. Every time you got up, she looked at him. Every time you came back, she changed the subject.””

My mouth went dry.

“And when I went to the restroom?””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“That's when she moved.””

I stared at him.

“You knew she was going to sit on his lap?””

“No. But when I saw her do it, I knew she wanted something to happen.””

“What?””

“I don't know whether she wanted you to get angry, Daniel to defend her, or the whole table to take sides. Maybe all three.””

He looked at me.

“But I knew it wasn't innocent.””

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

The thirty guests.

The public embarrassment.

The way Megan had refused to move until I threatened to mirror her behavior.

It had felt personal because it was personal.

But perhaps the humiliation had been only one part of what she wanted.

Perhaps she wanted witnesses.

People who would remember my reaction without understanding what had caused it.

“What did she whisper to Daniel?”” I asked.

Ryan's expression darkened.

“I don't know exactly what she said.””

“Claire heard something about me reacting and everyone seeing what I was really like.””

He closed his eyes briefly.

“That sounds like her.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she sometimes creates a situation where someone has to choose between looking unreasonable and accepting something they shouldn't have to accept.””

I thought of Megan's hand around Daniel's neck.

Her smirk.

Her insistence that it was a joke.

Then her fury when I suggested doing the same thing to Ryan.

Ryan shook his head.

“She wants to control the story afterward. If you get upset, she can tell everyone you're jealous. If you stay quiet, she can pretend you accepted it.””

My heart pounded.

“And what happens if Daniel tells her to stop?””

Ryan looked toward my husband.

“Then she can say he's the one who made it awkward.””

A silence settled between us.

For the first time, I understood why Ryan had looked so exhausted at the table.

He wasn't merely watching his wife behave badly.

He was watching a situation unfold that he had feared might happen for months.

“Ryan,” I whispered, “do you think Megan is trying to take Daniel from me?””

He didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was heavy.

“I think she wants him to believe she's the person he should turn to when things go wrong between you.””

He paused.

“And I think she wants you to believe that if anything happens, it'll be your fault.””

My eyes burned.

I looked away before the tears could fall.

Twelve years of friendship.

Twelve years of believing Megan would never deliberately hurt me.

And now I was standing outside a restaurant, listening to her husband explain how she might have been positioning herself inside my marriage.

Ryan gently touched my shoulder.

“There's something else you should know.””

I looked at him.

“Before we came tonight, I found something on her phone.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you find?””

He glanced toward Daniel again.

Then he lowered his voice.

“It was a message about Daniel. And when I asked her about it, she told me I had no right to look at it.””

“What did the message say?””

Ryan's face tightened.

“I didn't get to read the entire conversation.””

“Why not?””

“Because she took the phone away from me.””

He hesitated.

“But I saw enough to know she'd been planning something.””

Before I could ask another question, the restaurant door opened.

Megan stepped outside.

Her eyes moved from Ryan to me, then settled on her husband.

“Are you seriously discussing me behind my back?”” she demanded.

Ryan straightened.

“No.””

She stared at him.

“Then what are you doing?””

“I'm telling the truth.””

For the first time that evening, Megan looked genuinely frightened.

Then she turned toward me.

“You need to stop listening to him,” she said.

“He's been suspicious of me for months, and now he's dragging you into our marriage.””

I looked at Ryan.

He didn't interrupt her.

He didn't defend himself.

He simply stood there, waiting.

And suddenly, I understood something about the difference between them.

Megan needed everyone to believe her immediately.

Ryan was willing to let the truth take its time.

I turned back to her.

“What was the message about Daniel?””

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

May you like

But I saw it.

And whatever she had been planning, I knew I had just asked the one question she hadn't prepared herself to answer.
