Chapter 11

Madison gave more evidence.
Texts.
Voice notes.
Photos.
Receipts.
She had been involved with Daniel for nine months.
He told her we were separated.
Then that I was unstable.
Then that I was greedy.
Then that I had agreed to leave the house in exchange for money.
She believed what benefited her.
That was the kindest honest sentence I could make.
She gave Karen a voice note Daniel sent two days before everything happened.
Daniel’s voice:
Emily won’t fight if she feels replaced. She hates confrontation. Once you’re in the house, she’ll sign anything to make it stop.
I sat very still while it played.
Karen paused afterward.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
“Do you need a break?”
“No. Play it again.”
She did.
I needed to hear the monster clearly.

Evidence keeps it sharp.
