Chapter 6

Karen arrived before the officers left.
She entered with a leather folder, silver glasses, and the energy of someone who enjoyed ruining bad men’s plans.
She listened to Officer Grant.
Then reviewed the court form.
Then looked at Daniel.
“Who prepared this?”
Daniel said, “It was a draft.”
Karen smiled.
“Drafts also have authors.”
Madison said, “Daniel’s friend sent it.”
“What friend?”
Daniel snapped, “She doesn’t know anything.”
Karen turned to Madison.
“That means you know something useful.”
Madison’s mouth tightened.
Daniel glared at her.
For the first time, I watched fear move across Madison’s face.
Not of me.
Of him.
She looked down.
“His friend Victor.”
Karen’s pen stopped.
“Victor Lang?”
Daniel went silent.
Karen’s eyes sharpened.
I knew that name.
Every woman in Dallas with a complicated divorce seemed to know that name eventually.
Victor Lang was not a real attorney.
He called himself a family transition consultant.
A man who helped husbands “protect assets” and “manage custody instability.”
May you like
Karen called him something else.
A predator with business cards.
