Chapter 11

Lily started therapy with Dr. Mara Greene.
The first session, she drew a house.
Three people inside.
Me.
Her.
Bunny.
Daniel stood outside.
Madison was drawn as a red scribble beside the trash can.
I did not comment.
Dr. Greene asked Lily, “What is Madison doing?”
Lily said, “Trying to come in.”
“What keeps her out?”
Lily drew a giant lock on the door.
Then she looked at me.
“Mommy has the key.”
I cried in the bathroom afterward.
Quietly.
Dr. Greene found me.
“They process safety through images at this age.”
I wiped my face.
“She should never have needed a lock.”
“No,” Dr. Greene said. “But she knows who protects the door.”

That helped.
A little.
