Chapter 20

On Lily’s eighteenth birthday, she asked for a small party at home.
No big crowd.
No drama.
Just Nora, a few friends, cake, and Bunny sitting on the gift table because tradition is tradition.
After dinner, Lily handed me an envelope.
“For you.”
Inside was a drawing.
Old style.
Like the one from therapy.
A house.
Three people inside.
Me.
Lily.
A tiny stick figure labeled Future Me.
Outside the door stood a faded gray scribble.
Not red anymore.
Gray.
Small.
Powerless.
The lock on the door was still there.
But this time, the door was open.
I looked at Lily.
She smiled.
“I don’t need it locked all the time now.”
I cried immediately.
She laughed.
“Mom.”
“No, let me have this.”
She hugged me.
Hard.
Later that night, after everyone left, I found the old family court form in my locked file box.
Proposed Guardian: Madison Pierce.
The handwriting looked even uglier than I remembered.
I did not keep it because it owned me.
I kept it because evidence had once protected us.
I scanned it one last time.
Then I shredded the paper.
Lily watched the strips fall.
“Good,” she said. “Cursed document.”
I laughed through tears.
“Yes. Cursed document.”
Daniel and Madison had tried to rewrite motherhood in my own living room.
They packed my daughter’s bag.
They wrote another woman’s name beside her future.
They thought fear would make me sign.
They were wrong.
I came home early.
I saw my daughter’s tiny wrist in another woman’s hand.
I shoved the threat away.
I called my lawyer.
And the child they tried to move like property grew up knowing exactly who her mother was.
Not the woman who grabbed her.
May you like
Not the man who watched.
The one who stood between her and the door.
