Chapter 18

Healing came slowly.
For months, Lily asked if Madison knew where we lived.
I told her the truth in child-safe words.
“She is not allowed near us.”
“Will Daddy bring her?”
“No.”
“What if he forgets?”
“Then the judge, your therapist, and Mommy will remember.”
That answer made her smile.
Lily’s wrist healed fast.
Her trust did not.
She stopped wanting sleepovers.
Stopped liking backpacks.
For a while, she cried when I packed her schoolbag.
So we changed the ritual.
Every morning, I asked, “Where are you going?”
She answered, “School.”
“Who picks you up?”
“Mommy or Aunt Nora.”
“Who decides where you live?”
“The judge and Mommy.”
“And whose backpack is it?”
May you like
“Mine.”
Slowly, the backpack became just a backpack again.
