Chapter 9: The Mother Who Waited

I thought I would feel anger.

I thought I would feel betrayal.

I thought I would have a thousand questions ready.

But when the woman walked into the room…

I felt something else.

Recognition.

Not because I knew her.

Because something inside me did.

She was older than the photograph.

Her hair had silver strands.

Her hands shook.

But her eyes—

Her eyes looked exactly like mine.

She stopped when she saw me.

“Oh my God.””

Her voice broke.

“Claire.””

I couldn’t move.

“You’re real.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

She covered her mouth.

“I’ve been looking for you.””

My father stood.

“Emily.””

She turned.

The pain on her face became anger.

“You told her I abandoned her.””

My father didn’t answer.

Emily looked at me.

“He told you that, didn’t he?””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

She cried.

“Because I thought you were safe.””

I stared.

“What?””

She sat down slowly.

“I was sick when you were born.””

She explained.

She had been diagnosed with a serious illness.

She was young.

Scared.

And Richard convinced her that he could give me a better life.

“He said he would make sure I could see you.””

Her voice broke.

“He promised.””

I looked at my father.

“You lied to her?””

He looked away.

Emily continued.

“After you were taken, I tried to contact him.””

She pulled out an old envelope.

“He blocked every attempt.””

I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Hundreds of them.

All addressed to me.

My hands shook.

“You wrote these?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I get them?””

Emily looked at my father.

“Because he never gave them to you.””

The room went silent.

My father finally spoke.

“I was protecting her.””

Emily turned sharply.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Then she looked at me.

“The money was never supposed to be controlled by him.””

I looked down.

“The trust.””

She nodded.

“It was created for you.””

“And he used it.””

“Yes.””

A tear fell down my face.

Everything hurt.

But one thing mattered.

My daughter.

“My baby almost died because of this.””

Emily looked horrified.

“What?””

I explained what happened.

The fall.

The stress.

The transfer.

Her expression changed.

Then she looked at my father.

“You used her trust while she was pregnant?””

My father looked ashamed.

“I needed time.””

Emily stood.

“You almost destroyed her family because you couldn’t admit the truth.””

The room went quiet.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

Unknown number.

But this time, it wasn’t a threat.

It was a confession.

*Richard didn’t act alone. Brooke helped him. She knew everything.*

I looked at my father.

Then at Emily.

“Brooke knew?””

May you like

Nobody answered.

Because we already knew.
