Chapter 6: The Secret Beneath My Name

The message stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.

*You were never adopted.*

Four words.

Four words that somehow managed to break apart thirty-two years of memories.

I read them again.

Then again.

My fingers felt numb.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“Claire.””

I looked up.

His face was full of concern.

“What happened?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That scared me more than the message itself.

“You know something.””

He looked away.

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“You know something.””

He rubbed his hands over his face.

“I know about the adoption.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the machines around me had stopped making noise.

“What did you just say?””

Ethan looked at me.

“I know you were adopted.””

I stared at him.

The man who held my hand through labor scares.

The man who slept in hospital chairs.

The man I trusted more than anyone.

He knew.

And he never told me.

“How long?””

He swallowed.

“Since before we got married.””

A sharp pain went through my chest.

Not physical.

Something deeper.

“You knew?””

“Claire, listen—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You knew something about me that I didn’t know about myself.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I turned my face away.

Outside the window, the city lights blurred.

“I spent my whole life feeling like something was missing.””

My voice cracked.

“And you knew why.””

Ethan moved closer.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

He was silent.

Finally, he said:

“Your father contacted me two years ago.””

I looked back at him.

“Why?””

“Because he found old paperwork.””

My stomach tightened.

“What paperwork?””

Ethan reached into his bag again.

This time he pulled out a worn envelope.

“I found this with the folder.””

I didn’t want to touch it.

Something inside me already knew.

But I opened it anyway.

Inside was a copy of a birth certificate.

Not mine.

A baby girl.

Born thirty-two years ago.

The mother’s name was unfamiliar.

But the father’s name made my blood run cold.

Richard Hayes.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who told me I was his little girl.

I looked at Ethan.

“Why is my father listed as the father?””

Ethan looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“No.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

“You know something.””

He took a deep breath.

“Your father told me your adoption was complicated.””

“Complicated?””

“He said your biological mother couldn’t raise you.””

I stared at the document.

“Who was she?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why hide this from me?””

Ethan looked broken.

“Because your father begged me not to tell you.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“My father begged my husband to keep a secret about my own life?””

“Yes.””

“And you agreed?””

He lowered his eyes.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked at him.

“From what?””

Before he could answer, the hospital room door opened.

A nurse walked in.

“Claire, your doctor wants to see you.””

I quickly wiped my face.

“Why?””

The nurse hesitated.

“There was a new development.””

My heart jumped.

“Is my baby okay?””

“She’s stable,” the nurse said quickly.

I breathed again.

“But Dr. Patel found something she wants to discuss.””

Something.

That word never meant anything good.

Ethan stood.

“I’m coming.””

The nurse nodded.

As we walked down the hallway, I held the birth certificate tightly.

I thought about Brooke.

My father.

The blue folder.

The stolen money.

The fake signature.

All of it connected somehow.

When we entered Dr. Patel’s office, she closed the door.

“Claire, your baby is responding well.””

Relief flooded through me.

“Thank God.””

She smiled slightly.

“But there’s something else.””

I waited.

“When we reviewed your medical history, we noticed something unusual.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What?””

She looked at her notes.

“You listed your family medical history as unknown.””

“Yes.””

“Because you were adopted?””

I nodded.

She hesitated.

“Claire, your blood work shows a genetic marker that suggests we may need more information about your biological family.””

I froze.

“What kind of information?””

Dr. Patel looked at me carefully.

“Your baby’s condition may be connected to a hereditary issue.””

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“What issue?””

The doctor didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she asked:

“Claire, are you certain you were adopted legally?””

I looked at Ethan.

Then at the birth certificate in my hand.

“No.””

My voice barely came out.

“I’m not certain of anything anymore.””

When we returned to the room, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

Same unknown number.

This time, there was a picture attached.

A photograph.

A young woman holding a baby.

The baby had a hospital bracelet.

My name was written on it.

May you like

And underneath the photo was one sentence.

*Ask your father why he took you from her.*
