Chapter 5: The Name on the Document

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Not because of the hospital.

Not because of the machines.

Because of one sentence.

Ask Ethan why he never told you everything about your family.

I watched my husband sleeping in the chair beside my bed.

He looked exhausted.

He had been beside me every moment.

But Brooke’s words crawled into my mind.

By morning, I had to ask.

“Ethan.””

His eyes opened immediately.

“Are you okay?””

I hesitated.

“Did you know about the money?””

He sat up.

“What?””

“The transfer.””

His expression changed.

“I found out yesterday.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not that.””

I swallowed.

“Did you know Brooke was having financial problems?””

He looked away.

That tiny movement hurt.

“Ethan.””

He sighed.

“I knew she had debt.””

“How?””

“Your father asked me for advice months ago.””

I stared.

“Months ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I didn’t think it involved you.””

I looked at him.

“It involved my money.””

“I know.””

His voice softened.

“I’m sorry.””

I believed he meant it.

But there was still something missing.

“What else?””

He went quiet.

“Ethan.””

He reached into his bag.

Pulled out a folded paper.

“I found this in your father’s house when I went back yesterday.””

My hands felt cold.

“What is it?””

He gave it to me.

I unfolded the page.

It was part of the blue folder.

At the bottom was a name.

Not Brooke.

Not my father.

Mine.

But underneath it was another name.

A name I recognized.

A name I never expected to see.

My husband stared at the paper.

“Claire…”

I looked up.

“What?””

He pointed.

“That signature.””

My eyes moved down.

There was a signature line.

And a signature already filled in.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

My breathing stopped.

Someone had copied my name.

Someone had created a document pretending I agreed.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Stop asking questions, or your husband will find out what you did before you met him.*

I looked at Ethan.

He had seen my face change.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly I understood.

The blue folder wasn’t just about stealing money.

It was about a secret from my past.

A secret someone was willing to risk my baby to protect.

May you like

And the next message that appeared on my phone contained only four words:

*You were never adopted.*
