Chapter 8: The Truth My Family Buried
My father didn’t speak for almost a minute.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, he whispered:
“I thought this day would never come.””
Those words hurt more than any confession.
Because they meant he had always known.
“You knew,” I said.
My father looked at me.
“Yes.””
My mother started crying.
“Richard…”
“No,” I said.
I looked between them.
“Let him talk.””
My father sat down.
His shoulders dropped.
“I met Emily when she was eighteen.””
I listened.
“She was alone.””
“Why?””
“She had no family support.””
I frowned.
“And you?””
He looked away.
“I helped her.””
The way he said it made my stomach turn.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Richard.””
My father looked at him.
“You need to tell her everything.””
My father closed his eyes.
Then he said:
“Emily was my daughter.””
The room stopped.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“Emily was my daughter from a previous relationship.””
I stared.
“That means…”
He nodded.
“She was your half-sister.””
The words didn’t make sense.
My brain rejected them.
My biological mother.
My half-sister.
My family.
All these years.
Everything was a lie.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No, that’s impossible.””
My father looked devastated.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“How could you not know?””
He explained.
Years ago, before he married my mother, he had a relationship with a woman named Sarah.
Emily was born from that relationship.
He lost contact with Sarah.
Years later, Emily became pregnant.
She reached out.
She was struggling.
And then—
She disappeared.
“Where did she go?”” I asked.
My father’s face changed.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You expect me to believe you don’t know where my mother went?””
My father looked down.
“She left you with me.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She signed papers.””
“Why?””
He hesitated.
Then Ethan answered.
“Because the trust.””
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan continued.
“The money.””
My father said nothing.
Ethan held up the documents.
“Emily’s family had money.””
My blood ran cold.
“The trust was created for me?””
“Yes.””
My father’s voice was barely audible.
“Your biological mother’s family left money for you.””
“And you controlled it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because I was your guardian.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So the money was mine.””
“Yes.””
“And you gave it to Brooke?””
“I borrowed from it.””
“You stole from me.””
My father looked broken.
“I was trying to save the family.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
I touched my stomach.
“You were willing to risk my daughter’s future to save yourself.””
My mother suddenly spoke.
“Claire, please.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know?””
She cried.
“Yes.””
The room blurred.
Both of them.
My whole life.
I had trusted them.
A knock interrupted us.
A nurse stepped inside.
“Claire?””
“Yes?””
“There’s someone here to see you.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
The nurse looked at the clipboard.
“Emily Carter.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Ethan.
He looked just as shocked.
May you like
The nurse continued:
“She says she’s your biological mother.””
