Chapter 18

Thomas and I became family slowly.
Not through blood tests.
Those were only proof.
Family came through ordinary things.
He learned I hated raisins.
I learned he cried at old musicals.
He kept extra ginger tea in his apartment because I got nervous stomachaches before big meetings.
I learned to call him when something good happened.
Then when something bad happened.
Then for no reason.
One Sunday, I accidentally said, “Dad, pass the salt.”
The table went still.
Thomas froze with the salt shaker in his hand.
I froze too.
Then he handed it to me.
“Here you go.”
His voice cracked.
Neither of us made a speech.
May you like
We just kept eating.
Both crying a little.
