Chapter 10

Alicia filed against Caroline.

The legal documents were thick.

Estate fraud.

Conversion of minor’s assets.

Breach of fiduciary duty.

Concealment of parentage.

Mail interference.

Guardianship misrepresentation.

Caroline responded by calling me thirty-seven times.

I did not answer.

Then she came to the restaurant.

She marched in during lunch service wearing a red coat and rage.

“Emily!”

Everyone turned.

Peter looked terrified.

Good.

I stood near the host stand.

“Leave.”

She laughed.

“This is how you speak to family?”

Maya appeared behind the bar with a phone already recording.

Caroline saw it and changed her tone.

“Honey, I’m worried about you.”

“No, you’re worried about the lawsuit.”

Her face hardened.

“You think that man loves you? He loves the idea of you. I raised you.”

“You used me.”

“I protected you.”

“You stole from me.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You would have wasted it.”

There it was.

Not denial.

Just contempt.

Peter stepped forward.

“Ma’am, you need to leave.”

Caroline turned on him.

“I am her aunt.”

I said, “No. You are the woman who hid my father from me.”

The restaurant went quiet again.

Different day.

May you like

Different silence.

This time, I did not feel small inside it.
