Chapter 14

The case against Caroline took longer.

People think truth moves fast after evidence appears.

It does not.

Truth has paperwork.

Caroline delayed.

Denied.

Counterclaimed.

Said I was manipulated by a wealthy stranger.

Said my mother had been unstable.

Said she had sacrificed her life for me.

Then Alicia produced Mom’s letter.

The bank records.

The returned mail.

The fake guardianship statement.

Brandon’s testimony.

Thomas’s investigator receipts.

Caroline’s face during deposition became one of my favorite memories.

Alicia asked, “Did you ever tell Emily that Thomas Whitaker was looking for her?”

Caroline said, “No.”

“Why?”

“Because it would have upset her.”

“Or because it would have cost you control of her assets?”

Caroline’s mouth tightened.

“No.”

Alicia slid a bank statement across the table.

“Then why did you transfer $42,000 from Emily’s trust account three days after receiving Mr. Whitaker’s letter?”

Caroline said nothing.

Sometimes it is confession wearing good clothes.
