Chapter 11

Caroline’s records were worse than I expected.

She had sold my mother’s inherited property.

Cashed insurance checks.

Used my survivor benefits.

Opened an account in my name.

Moved money into her own business.

Paid private school tuition for her son while telling me community college was unrealistic.

Her son.

My cousin Brandon.

The golden boy.

He called me after the lawsuit became real.

“I didn’t know,” he said.

I wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

But he sounded horrified.

“I thought Mom paid with Dad’s money.”

“Your dad left when you were thirteen.”

“I know. She said investments.”

“Me. I was the investment.”

He was quiet.

Then said, “I’ll give a statement.”

That surprised me.

He did.

He provided emails.

Bank records he had access to.

Texts where Caroline called me “the girl” instead of my name.

One message read:

Emily is too busy waiting tables to ask questions.

I stared at that sentence for a long time.

Then I printed it.

May you like

Not to hurt myself.

To remember what truth sounded like when arrogance forgot to hide.
