Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Under Eight Years

Elena looked at Jack.

And for the first time in her life, she didn’t recognize him.

Not because he had changed.

Because he hadn’t.

That was the terrifying part.

The same steady eyes.

The same controlled breathing.

The same expression of a man who had spent his entire life carrying impossible decisions.

But now there was something else.

Fear.

Not fear of death.

Jack Braddock had never feared death.

Fear of the truth.

“Jack.””

The name came out quietly.

Almost like a question.

He didn’t answer.

Daniel stood across from them, rain running down his face.

“You deserve to know.””

Jack’s voice was low.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’ve had eight years.””

The words landed.

Jack looked away.

Elena felt something inside her tighten.

Because Jack wasn’t denying it.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t fighting.

And that meant there was something there.

Something he had buried.

Something he had protected.

“Tell me,” Elena said.

Jack closed his eyes.

For a second, he looked exhausted.

Not like a soldier.

Like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Eight years ago, the mission wasn’t compromised because of Daniel.””

Daniel looked down.

“It was because of me.””

The words were almost impossible to hear over the storm.

Elena stared.

“What?””

Jack looked at her.

“I was the leak.””

Nobody moved.

Not Adrian.

Not Mason.

Not even Daniel.

Because even after everything they had learned tonight, that was the one answer nobody expected.

Elena’s rifle lowered slightly.

“No.””

Jack didn’t defend himself.

“No?””

“No.””

Her voice hardened.

“You don’t get to say that like it’s simple.””

“It is simple.””

“Then explain.””

Jack looked toward the valley.

At the soldiers.

At the destruction.

At the consequences of a secret he had carried too long.

“I gave them information.””

Her face changed.

“Why?””

Jack swallowed.

“Because I thought I was saving you.””

The answer made no sense.

It made everything worse.

“Saving me?””

“Yes.””

“By betraying my team?””

“I didn’t know they were going to attack.””

The anger in her eyes sharpened.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to believe the truth.””

He took a breath.

“I was contacted before the mission.””

“By who?””

Jack looked toward Whitmore.

“The people above him.””

Everyone turned.

Whitmore’s expression remained calm.

But Elena noticed something.

A small shift.

A flicker.

The first crack in his control.

Jack continued.

“They told me there was a traitor inside the unit.””

Mason, still holding his wounded shoulder, looked at him.

“And you believed them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Jack looked at him.

“Because they showed me evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Jack’s jaw tightened.

“Evidence that Daniel was alive.””

Elena froze.

Daniel looked away.

Jack continued.

“They told me Daniel had been turned.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Yes.””

His voice broke slightly.

“That’s what I thought too.””

Elena stared at him.

“You believed my brother was the enemy.””

“I believed someone was using him.””

“And then?””

Jack looked at Daniel.

“I made a deal.””

The silence was brutal.

“With who?””

“The people controlling the operation.””

Elena felt sick.

“What kind of deal?””

Jack answered quietly.

“I would provide access.””

“To my mission?””

“Yes.””

“And in exchange?””

Jack looked at Daniel.

“They would keep Daniel alive.””

Everything stopped.

Elena looked at her brother.

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“You knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“You both knew.””

Nobody answered.

“You both let me believe you were dead.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“You let me hate myself.””

Jack whispered:

“I know.””

She stepped back.

The pain was too much.

Not anger.

Not betrayal.

Something worse.

Grief.

Because all those years, she had missed people who were standing somewhere alive.

People who had chosen silence.

“Why didn’t either of you come back?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because the people who wanted us gone were still watching.””

Jack added:

“And because they believed you were the key.””

“The key to what?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

Elena almost laughed.

“Of course.””

She looked at the sky.

“Another secret.””

Jack stepped closer.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

“Elena.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You don’t get to ask me to trust you.””

Jack stopped.

Because he knew she was right.

A gunshot broke the moment.

Everyone moved.

Whitmore’s forces were attacking again.

But something was different.

They weren’t advancing.

They were retreating.

Elena noticed first.

“Why are they leaving?””

Jack looked toward the vehicles.

Then his expression changed.

“Because they got what they came for.””

“What?””

Jack looked at Elena.

“You.””

Her stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, Daniel stepped forward.

“It means Whitmore never cared about stopping the mission.””

“Then what did he want?””

Daniel looked at the ground.

“The evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Daniel pointed toward the valley.

“Echo Team.””

Mercer looked up.

“What about us?””

Daniel answered:

“You weren’t trapped because they couldn’t rescue you.””

A pause.

“You were trapped because you were carrying something.””

Mercer’s face changed.

The team leader reached into his damaged pack.

Slowly, he pulled out a small black device.

Elena stared.

“What is that?””

Mercer looked uncomfortable.

“The reason we were sent here.””

Jack stepped closer.

“You had it the entire time?””

Mercer nodded.

“We didn’t know what it was.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Of course you didn’t.””

Elena looked at him.

“What is it?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“The entire operation.””

The storm continued.

But nobody moved.

Daniel continued.

“Names. Transfers. Orders. Every person involved.””

Elena stared.

“And Whitmore wants it destroyed.””

“Yes.””

Jack looked at the device.

“That’s why he created this.””

“What?””

“A battlefield.””

Daniel nodded.

“He needed everyone in one place.””

Elena finally understood.

The mission.

The rescue.

The trap.

All connected.

Whitmore didn’t want them dead because they failed.

He wanted them dead because they survived.

The four of them moved toward the extraction point.

Not because they trusted each other.

Because there was no one else left.

Jack stayed beside Elena.

Quietly.

Finally, she spoke.

“If we survive this…”

“I know.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t.””

He stopped.

“If we survive this, you tell me everything.””

Jack nodded.

“Everything.””

“No more protecting me.””

“No more.””

“No more deciding what I can handle.””

His voice was quiet.

“Never again.””

She looked away.

It wasn’t forgiveness.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But it was something.

A beginning.

Then the radio crackled.

Whitmore.

“Elena.””

She answered.

“What?””

His voice was calm.

Almost disappointed.

“You still don’t understand.””

She looked toward the ridge.

“You lost.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I won.””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

“You found the device.””

Silence.

“Which means you found the truth.””

The storm grew louder.

Then Whitmore said:

“And now you know exactly why I had to erase it.””

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Whitmore answered:

“Because the evidence doesn’t prove I betrayed you.””

Everyone froze.

“Then what does it prove?””

A long pause.

Then Whitmore said:

“It proves I was trying to stop someone worse.””

Elena looked at Jack.

Then Daniel.

Then Adrian.

“Who?””

Whitmore’s voice became almost a whisper.

“The person who created this entire operation.””

The radio went silent.

And then one final transmission came through.

Not from Whitmore.

From the device Mercer was holding.

A recording.

An old recording.

A voice from eight years ago.

Elena’s own voice.

Speaking before the mission began.

But she didn’t remember making the recording.

The message played.

“If you’re hearing this…”

Everyone froze.

Because Elena’s voice sounded terrified.

“…then something went wrong.””

Jack stared.

Daniel went pale.

Adrian whispered:

“No.””

The recording continued.

“I found out who the real traitor is.””

Elena stepped closer.

Her own voice echoed through the valley.

“And if anyone tries to stop you from finding the truth…”

A pause.

Then the sentence that changed everything.

“Don’t trust Jack Braddock.””

Elena looked at Jack.

Jack looked at her.

May you like

And for the first time…

He looked like he was the one who had been betrayed.
