Chapter 8: The Brother She Buried

Elena did not remember lowering her rifle.

She only remembered the sound of the radio going silent.

A silence louder than the gunfire.

Louder than the storm.

Louder than the years she had spent believing she was alone.

Daniel.

Her brother.

The person she had buried before she even understood what death meant.

For twenty years, she had carried a photograph of him in the back of a drawer.

For twenty years, she had remembered his laugh.

His terrible jokes.

The way he used to tap twice on her bedroom door before entering because he knew she hated surprises.

For twenty years, she had believed the world had taken him from her.

And now his voice had come through her radio.

Alive.

“I’m the one who pulled the trigger.””

The words repeated in her head.

Not because she didn’t understand.

Because she did.

And that was worse.

“Elena.””

Jack’s voice pulled her back.

She looked at him.

Her expression was empty.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Don’t tell me it’s not what I think.””

Jack said nothing.

“Don’t tell me there’s a reason.””

Still nothing.

“Don’t tell me everyone was trying to protect me.””

Her voice cracked.

“Not again.””

Nobody spoke.

Even the battlefield seemed to pause.

Mason lowered his weapon.

Adrian looked away.

Because they all knew.

They had all taken pieces of her life and hidden them behind good intentions.

And now there was nothing left to hide behind.

The first shot came from her rifle.

Her brother fired it.

Jack knew.

Adrian knew.

Mason knew.

Whitmore knew.

Everyone knew except her.

The realization hurt more than the betrayal.

Because the people who loved her had not failed to protect her.

They had succeeded.

They had protected her from the truth.

And the truth had been destroying her anyway.

Elena grabbed the radio.

“Daniel.””

Static.

Then:

“I knew you would answer.””

Her hands tightened.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me mourn you.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“Elena—”

“No.””

Her voice became cold.

“You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“I know.””

The answer stopped her.

Because she expected excuses.

She expected him to defend himself.

Instead, he sounded tired.

Like a man who had been carrying the same weight.

“I know what I did to you.””

“Then why?””

The radio remained quiet.

Finally:

“Because I was trying to stop something bigger.””

She looked around.

At the soldiers.

At the bodies.

At the chaos created by secrets.

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

“Everyone says they had no choice.””

“I know.””

“Do you know what that sounds like?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

“A lie.””

The honesty was almost worse.

Elena closed her eyes.

“Where are you?””

No answer.

“Daniel.””

“You don’t want to come find me.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t get to decide what I want.””

“I’m trying to save you.””

“You lost that right twenty years ago.””

A long silence.

Then:

“You’re right.””

The admission hit harder than anger.

“I’m sorry.””

The words she had wanted to hear for years.

But they didn’t fix anything.

They never could.

A burst of gunfire erupted from the western ridge.

The unmarked soldiers were moving again.

Mercer shouted:

“We have incoming!””

The moment ended.

Training took over.

Elena wiped the rain from her scope.

Pain could wait.

Questions could wait.

The living could not.

She looked at Jack.

“Help me finish this.””

He nodded.

No argument.

No explanation.

Just action.

The four of them moved.

Elena.

Jack.

Adrian.

Mason.

A group of people who should have hated each other.

A group of people who had every reason to walk away.

But twelve SEALs were still trapped.

And that mattered more.

They reached the lower ridge within minutes.

The enemy soldiers were closer now.

Too close.

These weren’t ordinary fighters.

They moved like a unit.

Controlled.

Precise.

They weren’t trying to win.

They were trying to erase.

“Who are they?”” Mercer asked.

Jack answered.

“People who don’t officially exist.””

Mercer looked at him.

“Great.””

A pause.

“Love those.””

Elena almost smiled.

Almost.

She positioned herself behind cover.

“Jack.””

He looked over.

“You knew Daniel was alive.””

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

“How long?””

Jack hesitated.

“Eight years.””

Her jaw tightened.

“Again.””

“Elena—”

“Again, Jack.””

He swallowed.

“Eight years.””

The pain in her expression was worse than anger.

“You knew where my brother was.””

“Yes.””

“And you still came to my house after the funeral.””

“Yes.””

“You sat with my family.””

“Yes.””

“You looked at me.””

Her voice lowered.

“And you lied.””

Jack looked down.

“Yes.””

For a moment, she wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

But Jack looked broken.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

Just broken.

“I thought you were dead too,” Adrian said quietly.

Elena looked at him.

“What?””

“When I found out Daniel was involved, I thought Jack was protecting him.””

Jack shook his head.

“I wasn’t.””

“Then why?””

Jack looked toward the ridge.

“Because Daniel wasn’t the person who started this.””

The answer stopped everyone.

Elena turned.

“What?””

Jack continued.

“Daniel was recruited.””

“By who?””

Nobody needed to answer.

Whitmore’s voice came through the radio.

“By me.””

Elena looked toward the distant ridge.

The general stood there.

Still watching.

Still calm.

“You recruited my brother?””

Whitmore replied:

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel had access.””

“To what?””

“Your trust.””

The words cut deeper than expected.

Whitmore continued.

“Daniel was the only person who could get close enough to alter the mission.””

Elena stared.

“You used my family.””

“Yes.””

No hesitation.

No denial.

Just a confession.

“Why?””

“Because your family was the only thing that could make you unpredictable.””

Her stomach tightened.

“You wanted me to fail.””

“No.””

Whitmore paused.

“I wanted to see if you would obey.””

The anger returned.

“You destroyed my life for a test.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“I destroyed a system that was already compromised.””

Jack stepped forward.

“You’re still justifying it.””

Whitmore ignored him.

“Elena, you need to understand. That night wasn’t about killing your team.””

“Then what was it about?””

“Finding the traitor.””

“And did you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Everyone went still.

Elena looked around.

“Who?””

Whitmore smiled faintly.

And that smile terrified her.

“Ask Jack.””

She turned.

Jack’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You know.””

Jack didn’t answer.

“Jack.””

His eyes met hers.

“I know who leaked the information.””

“Who?””

The battlefield noise faded.

Everyone waited.

Jack looked at Adrian.

Then Mason.

Then Elena.

“I know who betrayed us.””

“Who?””

Jack opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, a shot rang out.

Not from the enemy.

Not from Whitmore’s soldiers.

From behind them.

Mason dropped.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the storm.

A lone person.

No armor.

No insignia.

No hesitation.

Elena raised her rifle.

The figure stepped forward.

And removed the hood.

Daniel.

Her brother.

Alive.

Standing twenty yards away.

Jack raised his weapon.

Adrian did too.

But Elena stopped them.

“Wait.””

Daniel looked at her.

His eyes were older than they should have been.

Filled with regret.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

Elena stared.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“I will.””

He looked at Jack.

Then Whitmore.

Then the battlefield.

“The person who betrayed the mission eight years ago…”

He swallowed.

“…was not me.””

A cold wind moved through the valley.

Daniel looked directly at Elena.

“It was someone who knew exactly how to make me take the blame.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Who?””

Daniel’s eyes moved past her.

Toward the one person everyone had trusted.

The one person who had been trying to control the story from the beginning.

And then he said:

“The person who betrayed you was the person who trained you to find betrayal.””

Elena followed his gaze.

And slowly turned toward Jack.

May you like

Because for the first time all night…

Jack Braddock looked afraid.
