Chapter 5: The Name That Broke Her

For a moment, Elena heard nothing.

Not the rain.

Not the gunfire.

Not the voices crackling through the radio.

Only one name.

Jack Braddock.

The man who had warned her.

The man who had apologized.

The man who had looked her in the eyes and told her he was trying to protect her.

The man General Thomas Whitmore had just accused of betraying her.

“No.””

The word came out before she could stop it.

Not because she knew it was false.

Because she needed it to be.

Mason looked at her.

And that was the worst part.

He didn’t look surprised.

He looked defeated.

Elena turned slowly.

“You knew.””

Mason didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

His silence became the confession.

Her grip tightened around the rifle.

“How long?””

“Vasquez—”

“How long did you know?””

Mason looked away.

“Eight years.””

The world seemed to tilt.

Eight years.

Eight years of unanswered questions.

Eight years of nightmares.

Eight years of believing Adrian died because the enemy was better.

But all along, there had been something else.

Someone else.

Elena stepped closer.

“You let me believe he was dead.””

Mason’s voice was low.

“Yes.””

“You let me hate myself for surviving.””

“I know.””

“You watched me rebuild my life around a lie.””

“I know.””

Her anger rose with every word.

“And you expect me to believe you were protecting me?””

Mason looked at her.

“No.””

The honesty stopped her.

“No?””

“No.””

He looked toward the valley.

“I expect you to hate me.””

The answer was not what she wanted.

She wanted excuses.

She wanted lies.

Something she could fight against.

Instead, he gave her the one thing she didn’t know how to handle.

Regret.

The radio crackled.

General Whitmore’s voice returned.

“Vasquez, do not engage Braddock.””

Elena stared.

The general continued.

“He is compromised.””

She pressed the button.

“Where is he?””

A pause.

Then:

“Unknown.””

“You know.””

“I know enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one you’re getting.””

Elena looked at Mason.

“Did Jack betray us?””

Mason’s face hardened.

“You need to decide what you believe.””

“That’s not helpful.””

“It’s the truth.””

She hated that.

Because Mason was right.

Everyone tonight had been giving her pieces.

Never the whole picture.

Adrian.

Mason.

Whitmore.

All of them knew something.

All of them were hiding something.

And Elena was standing in the middle.

A sniper surrounded by shadows.

She looked down into the valley.

Echo Team was still moving.

Still fighting.

Still alive.

That was the only thing she knew for certain.

“Mercer.””

The radio responded immediately.

“Valkyrie.””

“You’re changing direction.””

“Again?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Where?””

“Toward my position.””

Silence.

Then:

“That’s the enemy ridge.””

“Yes.””

“Respectfully, that’s a terrible idea.””

Elena almost smiled.

“Noted.””

Mercer sighed.

“You sound like my old instructor.””

“Your old instructor was right.””

“That’s terrifying.””

“Move.””

“Copy.””

The SEALs began advancing.

But Elena knew the enemy would see it.

The question was whether they would stop them.

The answer came quickly.

Gunfire erupted.

Not from the ridge.

From behind.

Elena turned.

The black vehicles had opened fire.

Not at her.

At Echo Team.

Her eyes narrowed.

“They’re shooting their own side.””

Mason looked toward the vehicles.

“That was never an extraction team.””

“What was it?””

“Cleanup.””

The word made her stomach tighten.

Cleanup.

A term used by people who wanted problems erased.

Not solved.

Elena watched the unmarked soldiers advancing.

“They’re here to kill everyone.””

Mason nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because Echo Team saw something they weren’t supposed to see.””

“What?””

Mason hesitated.

Then:

“The same thing Adrian saw.””

Adrian found her ten minutes later.

Not through the radio.

In person.

He appeared from the trees as Elena and Mason moved toward Echo Team’s position.

Mason immediately raised his weapon.

Adrian raised his hands.

“Relax.””

Mason’s expression turned cold.

“You don’t get to tell me that.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You’re still alive.””

“Unfortunately.””

A strange silence passed between them.

Two men who shared the same history.

Two men who had lost everything.

Elena looked between them.

“You two know each other.””

Neither answered.

That was enough.

She lowered her rifle slightly.

“Explain.””

Adrian looked at Mason.

Mason looked at the ground.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

“Eight years ago, our unit wasn’t attacked because the enemy found us.””

Elena waited.

“We were sold.””

The rain fell harder.

“Someone gave them our location.””

“Who?””

Adrian looked at her.

“That’s the question.””

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“No.””

“What?””

“You don’t get to do that.””

“Do what?””

“Give me half a truth and walk away.””

Adrian was quiet.

She stepped closer.

“I lost eight years believing you died.””

His expression changed.

A small crack.

“I know.””

“I blamed myself.””

“I know.””

“I replayed that night over and over.””

His eyes lowered.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

Adrian looked at Mason.

Mason didn’t stop him.

So Adrian said:

“The person who betrayed us wasn’t one person.””

Elena frowned.

“What?””

“It was a network.””

The words settled.

“A group inside our own system.””

Mason spoke quietly.

“People with access.””

“People who could change reports.””

“People who could erase evidence.””

Elena looked at him.

“And Jack?””

Neither man answered.

That scared her more than anything.

The battle moved closer.

There was no time left for history.

Only survival.

Echo Team reached the ridge.

Mercer dropped behind cover beside Elena.

He looked at Mason and Adrian.

Then back at Elena.

“I’m guessing this wasn’t in the original plan.””

“No.””

“Good.””

He checked his weapon.

“I hate plans that make sense.””

Despite everything, Elena almost laughed.

Almost.

Then the first wave hit.

The unmarked soldiers advanced through the storm.

Professional.

Disciplined.

Not like the enemy fighters.

These men moved like they had trained together for years.

Because they had.

They were American.

Elena felt something inside her break.

Enemy fire was easier.

Enemy fire made sense.

But this?

This was betrayal wearing a uniform.

She fired.

One.

Two.

Three.

The attackers fell.

Echo Team returned fire.

Mason moved beside Mercer.

Adrian covered the opposite side.

For the first time in eight years, the three of them fought together again.

And Elena hated how natural it felt.

Like no time had passed.

Like the past had been waiting for them.

Then her radio activated.

A new signal.

A private channel.

Only one person had access.

Jack.

“Elena.””

Her body froze.

The battlefield disappeared.

She heard only him.

“Jack?””

Static.

Then his voice.

“You need to listen to me.””

Her hand tightened.

“Why should I?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Because General Whitmore is lying.””

She looked toward Mason.

Then Adrian.

Then the approaching soldiers.

Jack continued.

“The person who betrayed us eight years ago was never me.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Then who was it?””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

When Jack finally answered, his voice was barely a whisper.

“It was the person standing beside you right now.””

Elena slowly opened her eyes.

Mason.

The radio went quiet.

Her finger moved toward the trigger.

Mason saw it.

And he didn’t reach for his weapon.

He simply said:

“Before you decide, Elena…”

A burst of gunfire exploded behind them.

Mason turned.

Everyone turned.

A figure stepped out of the smoke.

A familiar figure.

Someone Elena thought she would never see again.

Someone who had been missing for eight years.

Jack Braddock.

May you like

Alive.

And holding a weapon aimed directly at Mason.
