Chapter 3: The Order to Kill Her

For three seconds, Elena forgot how to move.

Not because she was shocked.

Because every instinct she had built over eight years was screaming at the same time.

Trust no one.

Check everything.

Assume every impossible thing has a reason.

But there was one problem.

The voice on the radio was real.

Captain Mason Cole.

The same man who had wished her luck before she entered the mountains.

The same man who had told her to bring twelve SEALs home.

The same man who now wanted her dead.

“Repeat that transmission,” Elena whispered.

Static answered.

Then the voice returned.

“Mason, confirm visual.””

Another voice replied.

This one colder.

Older.

“Visual confirmed. Vasquez is in position.””

Elena’s blood ran cold.

Not because they knew where she was.

Because they knew exactly what she would do next.

Someone had studied her.

Someone had predicted her.

Adrian’s voice came quietly through the radio.

“Now you understand.””

Elena kept her eyes locked on the ridge.

“No.””

“You heard it.””

“I heard something.””

“You heard them order your death.””

She didn’t answer.

Because answering meant admitting it.

And Elena Vasquez had survived eight years by refusing to accept things before she understood them.

The world had lied to her before.

She knew better than anyone.

A sniper didn’t survive by believing what they saw.

They survived by questioning it.

Every shadow.

Every movement.

Every sound.

“Why are you helping me?”” she asked.

Adrian didn’t respond immediately.

That bothered her more than if he had answered.

Because Adrian Cross had always been quick.

Always had a plan.

Always had three options before anyone else had one.

Finally, he said:

“Because I owe you the truth.””

Elena looked through her scope.

The enemy ridge.

The hidden fighters.

The man who should not exist.

Everything about this night was impossible.

“You’re the reason I’m here.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

“You wanted me to come.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re the only person who can stop what’s coming.””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“That’s convenient.””

“It’s not.””

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I expect you to survive long enough to find out.””

Before Elena could respond, a bullet struck the rock beside her.

The impact sprayed stone across her face.

She dropped lower.

Adrenaline replaced confusion.

The mountain returned.

The mission returned.

Twelve men were still trapped.

The enemy was still shooting.

And whatever secrets were waiting would have to wait.

“Echo Team,” Elena said into the radio.

A weak response came through.

“Valkyrie?””

She recognized the voice.

Lieutenant Ryan Mercer.

The youngest member of the team.

His breathing was heavy.

“You still alive?””

A short laugh.

“Barely.””

“How many?””

“Eight combat effective.””

Elena’s jaw tightened.

Four wounded.

“How long can you hold?””

A pause.

The kind of pause soldiers gave when the honest answer was terrifying.

“Ten minutes.””

She looked toward the valley.

Then toward the enemy positions.

Ten minutes.

Impossible.

Which meant it was exactly the kind of situation she was built for.

“Listen carefully,” she said.

“We’re listening.””

“I’m opening a path.””

Mercer hesitated.

“With what?””

Elena adjusted her rifle.

“With the mountain.””

The first target was not a person.

It was a weapon.

The enemy machine gun position overlooking Echo Team.

Elena had already eliminated the first gunner.

But another team had moved into place.

Three fighters.

Heavy weapon.

Perfect angle.

She calculated distance.

Wind.

Rain.

Movement.

The storm had changed.

Sixteen knots.

Crosswind.

Elevation adjustment.

She breathed out.

One shot.

The gun exploded into silence.

Before the enemy understood what happened, Elena fired again.

The second shot hit the ammunition crate beside them.

The explosion forced the remaining fighters into the open.

The third shot ended the threat.

Four seconds.

Three enemies removed.

Echo Team had a chance.

“Move now,” Elena ordered.

The radio erupted.

“Moving!””

Below, twelve SEALs began pushing from the rocks.

The enemy responded immediately.

Too quickly.

Almost like they were waiting.

Elena watched through the scope.

Something was wrong.

The fighters weren’t trying to stop Echo Team.

They were forcing them toward a specific route.

A trap.

“Mercer.””

“Go.””

“Stop moving.””

A pause.

“What?””

“Stop.””

“We’re exposed.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Elena scanned the valley.

There.

A small movement.

A rifle barrel hidden beneath a tarp.

Another.

Then another.

“They’re herding you.””

Silence.

Then Mercer answered.

“Where?””

“South path.””

“That’s our extraction route.””

“I know.””

Her mind raced.

The enemy wasn’t trying to kill Echo Team.

They were trying to move them.

But why?

Unless…

Unless Echo Team wasn’t the target.

Elena looked back toward the ridge.

Adrian was gone.

She suddenly understood.

The mission wasn’t about rescuing twelve SEALs.

It was about controlling who reached them first.

Someone wanted Echo Team alive.

Someone wanted Elena there.

Someone wanted all of them in one place.

A trap inside a trap.

“Mercer, change direction.””

“Valkyrie, we don’t have another route.””

“You do now.””

“Where?””

Elena looked at the highest point of the valley.

A narrow passage.

Almost impossible.

But possible.

“North ridge.””

A pause.

“That’s exposed.””

“Yes.””

“That’s where the enemy is.””

“Yes.””

“That’s insane.””

Elena almost smiled.

“Finally, someone noticed.””

Mercer laughed once.

Then:

“Copy.””

The SEALs changed direction.

Immediately, enemy fire increased.

Elena moved.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Every bullet told a story.

Every shot revealed a position.

She mapped the ridge.

One shooter.

Two.

Five.

More than she expected.

Then she saw the one giving orders.

Not Adrian.

Someone else.

A man standing behind the fighters.

Calm.

Protected.

Watching.

Elena focused her scope.

Her finger moved toward the trigger.

Then stopped.

Because she recognized him.

Not from memory.

From photographs.

Briefings.

Mission reports.

The man everyone believed was responsible for dozens of attacks across the region.

A man who had never been caught.

A man whose name appeared only in classified files.

Kamal Rahimi.

The architect behind the attacks.

The person who had hunted American forces for years.

And he wasn’t looking at Echo Team.

He was looking directly at Elena.

As if he knew she was watching.

The impossible happened.

He smiled.

Then he lifted a radio.

Elena’s radio crackled.

“Agent Vasquez.””

Her entire body went still.

The enemy commander was speaking directly to her.

“You took your time.””

She stared through the scope.

“How do you know my name?””

A soft laugh.

“Because I’ve been waiting for you.””

The storm grew louder.

The valley disappeared beneath rain.

“What do you want?””

Kamal looked toward the trapped SEALs.

Then back at Elena.

“I want you to ask yourself one question.””

She said nothing.

“Why did they send you here alone?””

Elena’s grip tightened.

“Because nobody else could do it.””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“Because nobody else was supposed to come back.””

A cold silence followed.

Then Kamal said:

“Your friends at command didn’t send you to rescue Echo Team.””

Elena stared.

“They sent you to erase evidence.””

Her breathing slowed.

“What evidence?””

Kamal smiled.

And the answer that followed changed everything.

“The truth about what happened eight years ago.””

A gunshot suddenly cracked through the valley.

Not from the enemy ridge.

Not from Elena.

From behind her.

She spun around.

A figure emerged from the storm.

Weapon raised.

And the voice that followed belonged to someone she trusted more than anyone alive.

“Drop your rifle, Elena.””

She froze.

Because standing ten feet away from her was the person who had given the order to kill her.

May you like

Captain Mason Cole.

And he was pointing a gun directly at her.
