Chapter 9: The Memory They Took From Me
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Emily.
Not Daniel.
Not even Sofia.
The night air felt frozen around us.
Rachel’s words hung there like a weapon.
*You were the one who caused the crash.*
I looked at her.
Waiting for a smile.
A confession.
Some sign that she was lying.
But she didn’t.
She just stood beneath the streetlight, watching my entire world fall apart.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Rachel’s expression didn’t change.
“I know that’s what you want to believe.””
I stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Mark…”
I looked at her.
And the fear in her eyes scared me more than Rachel’s accusation.
Because Emily wasn’t looking at Rachel like she was a stranger.
She was looking at her like she was looking at a ghost.
“Who is she?””
Emily whispered:
“She was there.””
I stared at her.
“Where?””
“The night of the crash.””
My heart sank.
I looked back at Rachel.
“What happened?””
Rachel took a slow breath.
“I think you deserve the truth.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying that.
Everyone had a version of the truth.
But every version destroyed another piece of my life.
“You don’t get to decide what I deserve.””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s fair.””
She looked at Emily.
“You never told him.””
Emily looked away.
I turned toward my wife.
“Told me what?””
Silence.
Then Emily said:
“Because I didn’t know how.””
The honesty hurt.
I stepped back.
“What happened?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“The night of the crash…”
She swallowed.
“You weren’t driving because you wanted to hurt me.””
I froze.
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
“You don’t remember.””
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s the point.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“What did they do to me?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then my father stepped out from the basement exit behind us.
His face looked older than it had minutes before.
“Mark.””
I turned.
“You knew.””
Robert looked at me.
“Yes.””
The anger came instantly.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“I knew you weren’t responsible.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because you weren’t safe.””
I laughed.
A broken sound.
“You keep saying that.””
I pointed at everyone around me.
“And somehow every person trying to protect me ruined my life.””
Robert accepted the words.
Because he knew they were true.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Your father didn’t erase your memory.””
I looked at her.
“Then who did?””
Her eyes moved toward Daniel.
Then Victor.
Then back to me.
“Everyone involved.””
Daniel looked down.
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His voice was quiet.
“Yes.””
My fists tightened.
“How much?””
“Everything.””
The word cut deeper than anything else.
“You knew I wasn’t responsible.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Emily was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I was searching for a lie.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He finally looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something human.
Shame.
“Because I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed everything because you were afraid?””
“No.””
He swallowed.
“Because I was weak.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel continued.
“When Victor found out Emily discovered the accounts, he ordered the crash.””
Emily looked at him.
“You knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“I found out afterward.””
I stared.
“Afterward?””
He looked at the ground.
“I thought she died.””
Emily’s face hardened.
“You didn’t check.””
“No.””
“Because you didn’t want to know.””
Daniel had no answer.
Rachel spoke.
“Your car was supposed to crash.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She nodded.
“But you weren’t supposed to survive.””
The world went quiet.
I remembered fragments.
Rain.
Headlights.
Emily screaming.
A sharp turn.
Metal.
Pain.
Then nothing.
“I was there,” Rachel said.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I was investigating Victor.””
That surprised me.
“What?””
She nodded.
“I worked with your father.””
Robert looked away.
Rachel continued.
“Your father wanted to leave. Victor wanted control. Emily discovered the truth. I was trying to help her get evidence.””
She looked at the ground.
“But we were too late.””
Emily whispered:
“Rachel saved my life.””
I looked at my wife.
“She did?””
Emily nodded.
“When the car went off the road, Rachel found me.””
“Then why didn’t she call me?””
Rachel answered.
“Because by the time I reached you, Victor’s people were already there.””
I felt sick.
“They found us.””
“Yes.””
“What happened to me?””
Rachel looked at me carefully.
“You survived.””
The words felt strange.
“I survived?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“But you were unconscious.””
Emily continued.
“They told everyone you had died.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Rachel nodded.
“Victor needed you gone.””
I looked at my father.
“But I was alive.””
“Yes.””
Robert’s voice broke.
“I found you before they did.””
I stared.
“You saved me.””
He nodded.
“Then I made the worst decision of my life.””
“What?””
“I let them believe you lost your memory.””
I felt numb.
“Why?””
“Because Victor controlled everything.””
Robert looked at Emily.
“He knew Emily survived.””
Then at me.
“He knew you survived.””
He lowered his head.
“And he knew if you remembered, you would destroy him.””
I looked at Rachel.
“So why do I remember nothing?””
Rachel answered:
“Because the accident caused damage.””
I waited.
“But not all of it.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“You remembered.””
The night became silent.
“What?””
“You remembered everything.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Emily looked at me.
“Mark…”
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She looked devastated.
“I suspected.””
My voice cracked.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Emily stepped closer.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I knew you had missing pieces.””
“Then why?””
“Because every time you got close to remembering…”
She stopped.
“Something happened.””
“What?””
“Someone would interfere.””
My eyes moved toward Victor’s house.
Toward the basement.
Toward everything that had happened.
Then I understood.
They weren’t hiding the truth because I forgot.
They were hiding the truth because I was starting to remember.
Rachel reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small recorder.
“I brought this because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
She pressed a button.
A voice played.
My voice.
Five years younger.
Terrified.
The recording was filled with static.
Then I heard myself say:
“Emily, if something happens to me, don’t trust anyone.””
My breathing stopped.
The recording continued.
“Daniel is involved.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
Then my own voice spoke again.
“And my father knows.””
Robert looked away.
The recording continued.
“There is one person above all of them.””
A pause.
Then:
“Victor Hale.””
The audio ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Rachel.
“Where did you get that?””
She handed it to me.
“You made it.””
I stared.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
A sound came from behind us.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
Victor stood at the edge of the road.
Alone.
Calm.
Like he had been watching the entire time.
“I was wondering how long it would take.””
My father stepped forward.
“Victor.””
Victor smiled.
“Robert.””
I looked at him.
“You heard everything.””
“Yes.””
“And you’re not worried?””
He looked at me.
“No.””
“Why?””
Victor smiled.
“Because there’s one thing you still don’t know.””
He took a step forward.
“The crash wasn’t the first time you tried to expose me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Victor looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“You did it once before.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
He smiled.
“Five years before the crash…”
A pause.
“You already knew who I was.””
The world seemed to stop.
Victor pointed at me.
“You didn’t forget one night, Mark.””
May you like
He lowered his voice.
“You forgot five years.””
