Chapter 4: The Friend Who Buried the Truth
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Daniel.
Out of everyone in the world who could have stood beside Vanessa, it was him.
The man who had been at my side for twelve years.
The man who helped me build my company from a small office with two employees into something worth millions.
The man who stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who held Sofia after Emily disappeared and told me, “We’ll get through this.””
Every memory I had of him suddenly felt poisoned.
I stared up at him.
“Say that again.””
Daniel didn’t look away.
“Mark…”
“No.””
My voice echoed through the basement.
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re still my friend.””
Vanessa walked down the stairs slowly.
Unlike before, she wasn’t pretending anymore.
The kindness was gone.
The fake concern.
The perfect smile.
All of it disappeared.
She looked at me like I was finally seeing her for the first time.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
I pointed toward the hidden door behind me.
“I understand that you locked my wife away.””
Then I pointed at Daniel.
“I understand that he helped you.””
My finger lowered.
“But I still don’t understand why.””
Daniel sighed.
That sigh made something inside me burn.
Like he was tired.
Like this was an inconvenience.
Like my family’s destruction was just another problem he needed to solve.
“You always were too emotional.””
The words stunned me.
Not because they hurt.
Because they confirmed everything.
This was the man he had always been.
The man hidden behind the friendship.
“You watched me search for her.””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
“You watched me spend years believing she was dead.””
Silence.
“You watched my daughter grow up without her mother.””
His jaw tightened.
“I did what I had to do.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
The word came out cold.
“You did what benefited you.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
For the first time, anger appeared.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Then explain.””
He said nothing.
I laughed.
“Exactly.””
Sofia was still holding my hand.
She looked up at Daniel with confusion.
Children have a strange way of seeing through adults.
She didn’t understand business.
She didn’t understand betrayal.
But she understood that the man she once trusted was standing with the people who hurt her.
“Uncle Daniel…”
Her voice was small.
Daniel looked at her.
And for one second, something moved across his face.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
But then it disappeared.
“I’m sorry, Sofia.””
She stepped closer to me.
“You lied.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
That answer surprised me.
Not because he admitted it.
Because he didn’t apologize.
He didn’t deny it.
He simply accepted it.
Like everything was already decided.
I looked back at Emily’s door.
“Open it.””
Nobody moved.
I raised my voice.
“Open the door.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t want to do this.””
I stared at him.
“You have no idea what I want.””
He walked down the final steps.
“You think this ends with Emily walking upstairs?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew what he was doing.
He was trying to scare me.
Trying to make me doubt.
Trying to make me believe there was something worse waiting.
“You need to hear the truth,” Daniel said.
I smiled bitterly.
“The truth?””
I looked around the basement.
“My wife was locked in a room beneath my house for five years.””
I pointed toward him.
“And you want to talk about truth?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Yes.””
He stopped a few feet away.
“Because Emily wasn’t just a victim.””
The words made me freeze.
Behind the door, I heard movement.
Emily.
Listening.
“Don’t,” she whispered.
Daniel looked toward the door.
“You should have told him.””
Emily’s voice became sharper.
“Don’t you dare.””
I looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Nobody answered.
That silence terrified me.
I turned toward the door.
“Emily?””
No response.
“Emily, talk to me.””
A few seconds passed.
Then:
“I was trying to protect you.””
My chest tightened.
“From what?””
Another pause.
“From the people who caused the crash.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“And from what she discovered afterward.””
I looked at him.
“What did she discover?””
Daniel smiled slightly.
A cold, empty smile.
“The company wasn’t failing because of the market.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
He continued.
“Those losses. The missing accounts. The investors pulling out.””
I stared at him.
“You told me it was bad luck.””
“It wasn’t.””
The basement became silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“It was someone stealing from you.””
I felt my face go numb.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
She looked back.
A conversation passed between them without words.
Then Vanessa said:
“Your wife found out.””
I looked at the hidden door.
“Found out what?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“That I wasn’t just your partner.””
The pieces started connecting.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“No.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
“I had access to everything.””
My heart started pounding.
“You stole from me.””
He shrugged.
“I invested in our future.””
“Our?””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You destroyed my life.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“No, Mark. I saved mine.””
That sentence told me everything.
The person I trusted most had never seen me as a friend.
Only an obstacle.
I moved toward him.
But Marco stepped between us.
“Mark.””
I looked at him.
“Move.””
He didn’t.
“Please.””
I stared at the man who had helped them.
“Why are you protecting him?””
Marco looked ashamed.
“Because I know what happens when people stop following orders.””
Daniel glanced at him.
“Careful.””
Marco went silent.
That was interesting.
Very interesting.
Daniel controlled him too.
I looked at Marco.
“What did they do to you?””
Nothing.
That was his answer.
He looked away.
And I realized there were more victims in this room than I first thought.
But I didn’t have time to understand them.
My wife was behind that door.
My daughter was beside me.
And these people were still trying to control the situation.
I turned back to Daniel.
“Open the door.””
“No.””
“Then I’ll break it.””
Daniel smiled.
“You really think you can just walk away from this?””
“I’m not walking away.””
I looked at Sofia.
“I’m taking my family home.””
Something changed in Daniel’s expression.
A warning.
“Mark.””
His voice lowered.
“You don’t know what Emily will tell you.””
I ignored him.
“You’re afraid.””
That stopped him.
I stepped closer.
“You’re not worried about me.””
I pointed at the door.
“You’re worried about what she knows.””
Daniel’s silence was confirmation.
Behind the door, Emily suddenly spoke.
“Mark.””
I turned.
“Emily?””
Her voice was shaking.
“There’s something you need to see.””
“What?””
“Under the floor.””
I looked down.
“What?””
“When Vanessa brought me here, I found documents hidden beneath the old boards.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“What documents?””
Emily answered:
“Proof.””
Daniel moved.
Fast.
“Get away from the door.””
I saw it immediately.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
I stepped in front of the hidden door.
“You’re scared of what’s in there.””
Daniel’s expression turned cold.
“You have no idea what you’re about to uncover.””
“Then why stop me?””
Nobody spoke.
I turned to Marco.
“Help me open it.””
Marco looked at Daniel.
Then at Sofia.
Then at the door.
A long second passed.
Then he stepped forward.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Marco.””
Marco swallowed.
“I’m sorry.””
For the first time that night, someone chose the right side.
Together, we pulled at the lock.
Metal screamed.
The old mechanism cracked.
Daniel shouted.
“Stop!””
Nobody listened.
The lock broke.
The door opened slowly.
A weak light from a small lamp inside revealed a figure sitting on the floor.
A woman.
Thin.
Pale.
Her hair shorter.
Her eyes older.
But the same eyes I had fallen in love with.
Emily.
Sofia gasped.
“Mommy…”
Emily looked at her.
And began to cry.
“My baby.””
Sofia ran.
I reached out instinctively, afraid.
But Emily caught her.
And held her like she had been waiting for that moment for five years.
I watched my wife hug our daughter.
And for one beautiful second…
I forgot about Daniel.
I forgot about Vanessa.
I forgot about everything.
Then Emily looked past me.
Her expression changed.
Fear returned.
“Mark…”
I stepped closer.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then whispered:
“He wasn’t working alone.””
Daniel turned away.
Too late.
Emily had already seen the envelope in my hand.
The same envelope Vanessa dropped.
The one with my wife’s handwriting.
She stared at it.
And her face went completely pale.
“Where did you get that?””
I looked at her.
“Vanessa had it.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“That letter was never meant for Vanessa.””
I frowned.
“Then who was it for?””
Emily looked at Daniel.
And whispered:
“It was for you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Emily reached for the envelope.
“Mark…”
She opened it carefully.
Then pulled out a single folded page.
The moment she saw the writing inside, tears filled her eyes.
Because the first line wasn’t a message.
It was a warning.
May you like
And it began with my name.
*Mark, if you’re reading this, it means I failed to stop the person closest to you.*
