Chapter 7: The Man Behind My Father’s Shadow
The man standing at the top of the stairs looked exactly like I remembered.
Silver hair.
Perfect suit.
Calm eyes.
A friendly smile that had convinced an entire room of mourners that he was grieving beside us.
Victor Hale.
My father’s oldest friend.
The man who gave the speech at my father’s funeral.
The man who held my shoulder and told me:
“Your father would be proud of you, Mark.””
I remembered those words.
I remembered believing them.
Now I understood something terrifying.
Some lies are powerful because they are built on memories you never thought to question.
Victor looked down at me.
Not angry.
Not nervous.
Almost amused.
“You’ve had a difficult evening.””
I stared at him.
“You were at my father’s funeral.””
His smile widened slightly.
“Yes.””
“You knew he was alive.””
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
The answer was so simple that it almost hurt more.
I stepped forward.
“You stood there while I buried an empty coffin.””
Victor folded his hands.
“You buried an idea.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father understood something you never did.””
I looked at Robert.
My father.
The man I no longer recognized.
“He understood that people need to believe certain things.””
I laughed quietly.
“You’re talking about my life like it’s a business strategy.””
Victor smiled.
“Everything is a strategy, Mark.””
Those words made my skin crawl.
Because they sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
I looked at my father.
Then Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
Everyone connected to this nightmare had the same way of speaking.
Like human beings were pieces on a board.
Like pain was just a necessary sacrifice.
I stepped closer to Victor.
“You caused this.””
Victor tilted his head.
“Caused what?””
I pointed around the basement.
“My wife being imprisoned.””
“My daughter being threatened.””
“My entire life being manipulated.””
He looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
“I didn’t cause it.””
He paused.
“I managed it.””
The honesty was worse than a lie.
Emily moved closer to Sofia.
“Mark, don’t listen to him.””
Victor looked at her.
“You always were stubborn.””
Emily’s face hardened.
“And you always underestimated people.””
A small smile appeared on Victor’s face.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I underestimated how long you could survive.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why?””
Victor looked confused.
“Why what?””
“Why destroy my family?””
He walked down the stairs slowly.
Every step echoed.
“You still think this is about your family.””
He stopped halfway.
“It’s about inheritance.””
The word made the room go silent.
I looked at my father.
“What inheritance?””
Robert looked away.
That was enough.
I turned back to Victor.
“What did my father leave me?””
Victor smiled.
“Everything.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your father spent decades building something much larger than a company.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Mark…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face was pale.
“I think you should hear him.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“After everything you did, you want me to trust your advice?””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I want you to understand why this happened.””
I stared at him.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Not afraid of me.
Afraid of Victor.
And that told me something.
Daniel had never been the person in control.
He was just another person being controlled.
Victor continued.
“Your father created a network.””
“A network?””
“Investments. Companies. Private accounts.””
I looked at the folder Emily gave me.
“The documents.””
Victor nodded.
“Those were pieces of it.””
My stomach tightened.
“And you?””
“I protected it.””
I laughed.
“By destroying my life?””
Victor’s expression didn’t change.
“By preparing you.””
I stared at him.
“Preparing me for what?””
He looked at Sofia.
Then Emily.
Then me.
“To become your father.””
The words made the entire basement freeze.
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“You already are.””
I shook my head.
“I’m nothing like him.””
My father finally spoke.
“Mark.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t.””
His face showed pain.
Real pain.
“I tried to keep you away from this.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You put me inside it.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“I thought I could end it.””
Victor looked at him.
“You always were sentimental.””
My father’s expression changed.
Anger.
“You threatened my son.””
Victor shrugged.
“I gave you a choice.””
“What choice?””
Victor looked at me.
“Your father had two options.””
The basement went silent.
“Let the truth destroy you.””
He paused.
“Or let you inherit the system.””
I stared at my father.
“You chose for me.””
Robert looked devastated.
“I chose to keep you alive.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You chose to control me.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew it was true.
Then Sofia spoke.
Her small voice cut through the room.
“You’re all lying.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped forward slightly.
“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting people.””
Her eyes moved from Vanessa to Daniel to Victor.
“But everyone hurts people.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my daughter.
And in that moment, I realized something.
She was the only person in that house who hadn’t been pretending.
Victor stared at her.
Then smiled.
“Your daughter is intelligent.””
I stepped in front of Sofia.
“Don’t talk about her.””
Victor raised his hands.
“I meant it as a compliment.””
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“You don’t get to compliment the child you used.””
Something flashed in Victor’s eyes.
Annoyance.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
He was used to controlling adults.
He wasn’t used to a child refusing to fear him.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Mark.””
I looked at her.
“We need to leave.””
I nodded.
For the first time all night, everyone agreed on something.
Escape.
But when I turned toward the stairs, Victor spoke.
“You can leave.””
I stopped.
That was unexpected.
Victor smiled.
“You can take Emily and Sofia.””
I looked back.
“What’s the catch?””
His smile disappeared.
“You leave the documents.””
“No.””
“You leave everything you found.””
“No.””
“And you never ask questions again.””
I laughed.
“You think I’m going to walk away?””
Victor sighed.
“That’s the problem with you.””
He looked at my father.
“You inherited his weakness.””
My father stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Victor looked at him.
“Sit down, Robert.””
My father stopped.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he was afraid.
I saw it.
The man who had always seemed impossible to break was afraid of Victor.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
Victor looked at me.
“I told you.””
“My father’s friend.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I was your father’s partner.””
My stomach dropped.
“Partner?””
“For thirty years.””
He stepped closer.
“Before your father decided he wanted to leave.””
My father’s face changed.
“I made a mistake.””
Victor laughed softly.
“You made a mistake when you thought you could become a good man after spending your life being one of us.””
One of us.
Those words stayed in my mind.
“What does that mean?””
Victor didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Emily.
“You should have told him earlier.””
Emily said nothing.
I looked at her.
“Told me what?””
She closed her eyes.
“Mark…”
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“Your father wasn’t the only person involved in the crash.””
I looked at Robert.
Then Victor.
Then Daniel.
“How many people?””
Nobody answered.
Emily reached into the folder.
She pulled out another photograph.
Her hands were shaking.
She handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was a picture from the night of the crash.
My wife’s car.
The road.
The emergency vehicles.
And standing beside the wreckage…
A person.
Someone who had arrived before the police.
Someone who had touched the evidence.
Someone who had known exactly what happened.
I looked closer.
My breath disappeared.
Because I recognized the face.
I looked up slowly.
“No.””
Emily whispered:
“Mark…”
I couldn’t move.
The person in the photograph was not Daniel.
Not Victor.
Not my father.
It was someone I trusted with my entire life.
Someone who had spent five years pretending to help me find the truth.
My hands began to shake.
“Who took this photo?””
Emily looked at Victor.
Then at me.
“The person who tried to expose them.””
I stared at the image.
Then I noticed something written on the back.
A date.
And one sentence.
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because the handwriting was mine.
*I know who killed Emily Carter.*
