Chapter 5: The Letter My Wife Hid From Me
The paper shook in Emily’s hands.
Not because she was weak.
Because she knew exactly what those words meant.
I watched my wife stare at the letter she had written to me.
A letter she never expected me to read.
A letter she had hidden because she thought it was the only way to protect me.
For five years, I had searched for answers.
I had chased rumors.
Followed false leads.
Paid investigators who always returned with the same empty conclusion.
But the truth had been sitting beneath my own house.
And the person who knew everything had been standing beside me the entire time.
Daniel.
I looked at him.
He looked away.
That was all I needed to see.
“You knew about this letter.””
It wasn’t a question.
Daniel didn’t respond.
Emily slowly unfolded the page.
“Mark…”
Her voice was barely audible.
“I need you to understand something before you read this.””
I stepped closer.
“What?””
She looked at Sofia.
Then at me.
“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to.””
My chest tightened.
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
“You think Vanessa and Daniel took me because of money.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Wasn’t it?””
Emily’s eyes filled with pain.
“Money was only the beginning.””
The basement became silent.
Even Vanessa stopped pretending.
I noticed her standing near the stairs, watching Emily carefully.
Not with anger.
With fear.
“Emily,” I said softly, “tell me everything.””
She looked at the letter.
Then she began.
“Five years ago, I found something strange in the company accounts.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Emily.””
She ignored him.
“There were transfers that didn’t make sense. Small amounts at first. Small enough that nobody noticed.””
I looked at Daniel.
“How long?””
“Almost two years.””
My stomach turned.
“You were stealing from me for two years?””
Daniel finally spoke.
“You’re making this sound worse than it was.””
I turned toward him.
“Worse?””
He lifted his hands.
“I was moving money around.””
“From my company.””
“Our company.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You stopped being my partner the moment you started hiding things from me.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Emily continued.
“When I confronted him, he denied everything.””
Daniel laughed.
“Because you didn’t understand what you were seeing.””
Emily looked at him.
“I understood enough.””
The anger in her voice surprised me.
My wife had always been gentle.
Patient.
The kind of person who apologized when someone else bumped into her.
But now I saw something different.
Five years of being trapped had changed her.
“What happened next?”” I asked.
Emily looked down.
“The night of the crash, I was going to meet someone.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Someone who had proof.””
Daniel moved forward.
“Stop.””
I immediately stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
Daniel stopped.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Emily continued.
“The person I was meeting had evidence that Daniel wasn’t working alone.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
“Vanessa?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
A strange feeling settled in my chest.
Not shock anymore.
Something heavier.
Betrayal.
“She knew.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
I looked at her.
“You always say that.””
Her face hardened.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You had choices.””
I pointed toward Sofia.
“You chose to hurt my daughter.””
Vanessa flinched.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
Emily looked at me.
“Vanessa wasn’t the one who caused the crash.””
I froze.
“Then who was?””
Emily looked at Daniel.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel’s expression became unreadable.
And that scared me.
Because I had known him for twelve years.
I knew when he was angry.
I knew when he was lying.
I knew when he was nervous.
But this?
This was something else.
This was a man who had prepared for this moment.
“You really think she’s telling you everything?”” Daniel asked.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel smiled.
A small, bitter smile.
“Ask her why she never came back.””
Emily closed her eyes.
My heart sank.
“Emily?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why?””
The silence stretched.
Then she whispered:
“Because I tried.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What?””
“I escaped once.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Emily looked at the floor.
“Three years ago.””
I stared at her.
“You were free?””
“For six hours.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“Six hours?””
She nodded.
“I got out through an old service tunnel.””
Her voice cracked.
“I reached the road.””
I could barely speak.
“Then why didn’t you call me?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“Because Vanessa showed me something.””
“What?””
Emily looked at Sofia.
And my heart dropped before she even answered.
“She showed me pictures.””
My face went cold.
“Pictures of what?””
“Of you and Sofia.””
I felt my fists tighten.
“She threatened you.””
Emily nodded.
“She told me if I contacted you, they would hurt Sofia.””
My daughter moved closer to me.
I wrapped my arm around her.
“She knew about our daughter.””
Emily nodded.
“She knew everything.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I was trying to protect her.””
I turned.
“By locking her in a basement?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I was trying to keep Daniel from finding her.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
That was the first time Vanessa’s words didn’t sound like an excuse.
They sounded like a confession.
“You were afraid of him.””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Interesting.””
Everyone looked at him.
He shook his head.
“After all these years, you still want to pretend you’re innocent.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I saved her.””
“You trapped her.””
“I kept her alive.””
“You kept her hidden.””
Their argument revealed something I hadn’t expected.
They hated each other.
They weren’t partners.
Not anymore.
They were two people who had spent years protecting the same secret and blaming each other for it.
I looked at Daniel.
“What did you do the night of the crash?””
His expression hardened.
“I was trying to stop Emily from ruining everything.””
The words came out too easily.
Too honestly.
Everyone froze.
Daniel realized what he had admitted.
But it was too late.
I stepped forward.
“You caused it.””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
“You arranged it.””
“No.””
“You were there.””
Silence.
Emily looked at him.
“You were supposed to make sure I disappeared.””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward her.
“You should have listened.””
A chill went through me.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“You don’t know what Emily found.””
I looked at my wife.
She looked terrified.
“Tell me.””
She hesitated.
Then she reached into the small room behind her.
From beneath an old blanket, she pulled out a folder.
Thick.
Dusty.
Hidden.
“This is why they couldn’t let me leave.””
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Financial records.
And something that made my hands go numb.
A contract.
With my signature.
Except I had never signed it.
I looked at Emily.
“What is this?””
She swallowed.
“Proof that someone has been using your identity for years.””
I turned the page.
Another signature appeared.
Another document.
Another transaction.
All connected to my company.
All connected to Daniel.
Then I saw the final page.
A list of names.
People involved.
People who knew.
People who helped.
My eyes moved down the page.
Until they stopped.
Because there was one name I recognized.
A name that made me feel like the floor disappeared beneath me.
Not Daniel.
Not Vanessa.
Someone else.
Someone I had trusted even more.
I looked at Emily.
“Why is my father’s name on this?””
Emily’s face went pale.
And before she could answer, every light in the basement went out again.
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Then a voice echoed through the house.
A voice I hadn’t heard in years.
“Mark?””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
And it couldn’t be possible.
The voice spoke again.
“Son…”
May you like
My blood turned cold.
“My father is here.””
