Chapter 9: The Evidence Hidden in My Wedding Dress
I stared at the photograph.
The USB device was small, black, and completely unfamiliar.
But the note was written on hotel stationery.
I called Olivia.
“Where did you find that?””
“In your bridal bag.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes. It was inside the little pocket where you keep your emergency sewing kit.””
I closed my eyes.
“Don't touch it.””
“I haven't.””
“Where are you?””
“In the preparation room.””
“Stay there. I'm coming.””
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately understood.
“What's happened?””
“Olivia found a USB device in my bag.””
Ryan stood.
“I'm coming too.””
We hurried toward the bridal preparation room.
Olivia was standing beside the dressing table.
The USB device lay on a clean handkerchief.
Nobody had touched it.
I looked at the note.
*The original files are here. Don't trust anyone at the venue.*
“Who put this in my bag?”” Olivia asked.
“I don't know.””
Daniel examined the device without picking it up.
“Could be evidence.””
“Or a trap,” Ryan said.
I looked at the note again.
There was a small mark in the bottom corner.
A letter J.
Julia.
I immediately called her.
She answered on the first ring.
“Emma?””
“Did you put a USB device in my bridal bag?””
Silence.
Then she said, “Yes.””
I stared at the phone.
“Why?””
“Because I couldn't send everything electronically.””
“What is on it?””
“The original Northbridge records. The payment authorization history. The messages between Richard and Peter. And something else.””
“What?””
“The original documents showing who created Collins Project Solutions.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Richard monitors company communications. I didn't know whether your phone was compromised.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Where did you get the device?””
“I gave it to Olivia when she came to the office yesterday.””
Olivia looked startled.
“You did?””
Julia continued.
“Emma, listen. There's something on that device that could prove Richard forged your identity.””
“What?””
“The original registration application for Collins Project Solutions.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who signed it?””
“Richard.””
I opened them.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes. He used a scanned copy of your signature, but the submission metadata shows the document was created on his computer.””
Daniel exhaled.
“That's significant.””
Julia's voice became urgent.
“There's more. The company wasn't created just to move the Northbridge money.””
“What else?””
“It was designed to receive a payment from a second source.””
“Who?””
Julia hesitated.
Then she said:
“Your employer's parent company.””
I felt the room go silent.
Richard had been using my name to move money from both sides of the Northbridge deal.
If the scheme succeeded, the records would suggest I had established a company, received unauthorized payments, and transferred confidential information to Daniel.
I would be blamed for everything.
“Julia,” I said, “can you send this directly to Detective Harris?””
“I already have.””
“Good.””
“But there's one problem.””
“What?””
“The original bank authorization is scheduled to be released at eleven-thirty.””
I looked at the clock.
10:52.
Thirty-eight minutes.
“Can it be stopped?””
“Not unless the bank receives a formal fraud notification from both companies.””
Daniel immediately called James.
“Get our legal department on the line. We need to stop a Northbridge payment authorization.””
He listened.
“Not tomorrow. Now.””
I looked at Ryan.
“We need Detective Harris.””
He was already dialing.
A moment later, the detective answered.
“Ms. Collins?””
“We have the original evidence.””
“Where?””
“At the wedding venue.””
“Do not remove or connect the device to any computer. I'll send an officer to collect it.””
I looked at the USB.
“Detective, we have less than forty minutes before another transfer is scheduled.””
“We're aware.””
“Then please stop it.””
“We're working on that.””
He ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma, we need to get you ready.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“The ceremony.””
I glanced at the clock.
Our wedding was scheduled to begin in eight minutes.
I looked at the dress.
The flowers.
The veil.
Everything we'd spent months preparing.
“Daniel, we may need to postpone.””
He shook his head.
“Why?””
“Because of the investigation.””
“Emma, the detective is handling the investigation. The bank is handling the payment. Our lawyers are handling the company.””
“And what if something else happens?””
He took my hands.
“Then we handle it together.””
I looked at him.
He smiled faintly.
“You've spent the entire morning trying to stop other people from deciding your future. Don't let them take the wedding too.””
My eyes filled.
I nodded.
Olivia adjusted my veil.
Ryan straightened his tie.
Daniel kissed my forehead.
Then he left for the ceremony room.
At 11:02, the music began.
I stood at the entrance to the ballroom.
The guests were already seated.
Some looked confused.
Others whispered as I appeared.
I knew what they'd heard.
I knew Richard's message was still circulating.
I knew there were people wondering whether the wedding should be stopped.
But I also saw my mother in the front row.
My aunt beside her.
My university friends.
My colleagues.
People who had known me long before Richard or Vanessa had entered my life.
And at the far end of the aisle stood Daniel.
His eyes found mine.
He smiled.
I began walking.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was carrying the weight of everything that had happened.
When I reached him, he took my hands.
“You look beautiful,” he whispered.
I smiled.
“You look terrified.””
He laughed softly.
“I've been terrified since I met you.””
The celebrant began speaking.
I tried to focus on the words.
Love.
Commitment.
Trust.
Partnership.
But halfway through the opening remarks, a man entered the back of the ballroom.
He wore a dark suit and carried a leather folder.
Richard.
My stomach tightened.
He walked down the side aisle.
A venue employee tried to stop him.
Richard showed him something on his phone.
The employee stepped aside.
Daniel noticed.
His expression changed.
“Emma,” he whispered.
“I see him.””
Richard stopped near the front.
“I'm sorry to interrupt.””
The celebrant paused.
Several guests turned.
I looked directly at Richard.
“What do you want?””
He held up the folder.
“There's a matter that requires your immediate attention.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“This is a private ceremony.””
Richard ignored him.
“Emma, you need to come with me.””
“No.””
His jaw tightened.
“This is important.””
“So is my wedding.””
A few guests exchanged glances.
Richard opened the folder.
“I have documents proving that you authorized the Northbridge transfers.””
A murmur spread through the room.
My mother stood.
“Richard, what are you doing?””
He turned toward her.
“I'm trying to prevent a serious financial crime.””
I stared at him.
“You mean the crime you committed?””
His expression hardened.
“Careful.””
I looked at the guests.
Then back at Richard.
“I have evidence that my identity was stolen and my signature forged. The police are investigating.””
He laughed.
“Convenient.””
Daniel stepped beside me.
“Richard, leave.””
“Mr. Carter, you should be careful. Your company is involved too.””
Daniel held his gaze.
“Then let the authorities investigate.””
Richard turned back to me.
“Emma, if you proceed with this wedding, you're making a terrible mistake.””
I felt my voice steady.
“No, Richard. The terrible mistake was trusting you.””
He raised the folder.
“Then perhaps everyone should see what you've signed.””
Before he could open it, the ballroom doors swung wide.
Detective Harris entered with two uniformed officers.
“Richard Hale?””
Richard turned.
“Yes?””
“We need you to accompany us.””
The room went silent.
Richard stared at the officers.
“On what grounds?””
“Suspected fraud, identity theft, and attempted unauthorized financial transfers.””
He laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.””
One officer stepped forward.
“Please put the folder down.””
Richard didn't move.
“Do you understand who I am?””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“Yes, Mr. Hale.””
Then he added:
“And we know exactly what you've been doing.””
Richard's face changed.
He slowly lowered the folder.
The officers approached.
I watched as they escorted him away from the front of the ballroom.
For the first time that morning, the whispers stopped.
My mother covered her mouth.
Ryan let out a breath.
Daniel squeezed my hand.
But before Richard reached the doors, he turned.
“Emma!””
I looked at him.
“You think you've won?””
I said nothing.
He laughed.
“You have no idea what's in those files.””
Detective Harris guided him forward.
Richard's final words echoed through the room.
“Ask your father!””
I froze.
My father?
The officers disappeared through the doors.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma?””
I couldn't speak.
My father had died four years earlier.
He had nothing to do with Northbridge.
Nothing to do with Richard's company.
Nothing to do with Daniel's business.
Or so I'd believed.
The celebrant approached cautiously.
“Would you like a moment?””
I looked at Daniel.
He studied my face.
“Do you want to stop?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He smiled gently.
“Then let's get married.””
I nodded.
The ceremony continued.
Daniel spoke his vows first.
He promised to be honest, even when the truth was difficult.
He promised never to make decisions about my life without me.
He promised to stand beside me when things became complicated.
When it was my turn, I looked into his eyes.
“I used to think marriage meant finding someone who would make my life easier,” I began.
A few guests smiled.
“But today, I learned that love isn't about never facing trouble. It's about knowing that when trouble comes, you won't have to face it alone.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I choose you, Daniel. Not because everything is perfect. But because even when everything falls apart, you're still the person I want beside me.””
The celebrant smiled.
Then came the rings.
Ryan handed Daniel the box.
Daniel took mine.
My fingers trembled slightly as he slipped it onto my hand.
Then I placed his ring in his palm.
He smiled.
“Mrs. Carter?””
I laughed through my tears.
“Not yet.””
The celebrant pronounced us husband and wife.
Daniel kissed me.
The room erupted in applause.
For a few minutes, I allowed myself to believe the worst was over.
Then my phone vibrated inside my bouquet bag.
A message from Detective Harris.
*We recovered the USB device. The files are authentic.*
I smiled.
Another message appeared.
*But Richard has made a statement concerning your father. We need to speak with you before you leave the venue.*
My smile faded.
I looked at Daniel.
He noticed immediately.
“What happened?””
I showed him the message.
He read it.
Then looked at me.
“Your father?””
I nodded.
“I don't understand.””
Daniel took my hand.
“Let's find out.””
Twenty minutes later, we were in a private room with Detective Harris.
He placed a document on the table.
It was a scanned letter.
The date was four years earlier.
My father's signature appeared at the bottom.
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
Detective Harris folded his hands.
“Your father was involved in an earlier investigation concerning Northbridge's predecessor project.””
I frowned.
“My father worked in construction.””
“Yes. He was a financial auditor for the original development company.””
I looked at Daniel.
He seemed just as surprised.
The detective continued.
“Before his death, your father submitted a report identifying irregular payments involving several senior executives.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because the report was sealed during the investigation.””
“Was Richard involved?””
Detective Harris nodded.
“He was one of the executives named.””
I stared at the letter.
My father had spent his final months fighting an investigation I knew nothing about.
And Richard had spent years trying to erase the evidence.
“Why would he mention my father today?””
The detective looked at the document.
“Because Richard claims your father took a confidential financial ledger before he died.””
I felt cold.
“What ledger?””
“He says it contains the original evidence of the Northbridge fraud.””
I shook my head.
“My father never mentioned a ledger.””
Detective Harris looked at me carefully.
“Are you certain?””
I thought about my father's study.
The old filing cabinets.
The boxes of paperwork he'd left behind.
After his funeral, my mother had kept most of his belongings.
I had taken only a few personal items.
Then I remembered something.
A small brass key.
My father had given it to me during his final hospital visit.
He'd told me to keep it somewhere safe.
I'd never known what it opened.
I looked at Daniel.
“There's something at my mother's house.””
Detective Harris leaned forward.
“What?””
I swallowed.
“My father left me a key.””
The detective's expression changed.
“Do you know what it opens?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Then my phone rang.
Mum.
I answered.
“Hi, Mum.””
Her voice was trembling.
“Emma, darling, where are you?””
“At the venue. What's wrong?””
“Two men have just been here asking about your father's old things.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“They said they were from the company.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you let them inside?””
“No. But one of them left something at the door.””
“What?””
“A photograph.””
My heart began pounding.
“What photograph?””
Mum hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“It's a picture of your father standing beside Richard Hale.””
I closed my eyes.
“Send it to me.””
A few seconds later, the photograph arrived.
My father stood outside an office building.
Richard was beside him.
And between them was a third person.
A woman.
I enlarged the photograph.
I recognized her immediately.
It was Julia Bennett.
But that wasn't what made my blood run cold.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.
The date of my father's death.
And underneath it were six words.
*He didn't die because of an accident.*
I stared at the message.
Daniel took the phone from my hand.
His expression changed.
“Emma…”
I couldn't breathe.
Detective Harris immediately stood.
“Where does your mother live?””
I gave him the address.
He called for an officer to be dispatched.
Then he looked at me.
“Ms. Carter, I need you to understand something.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Richard Hale may not be the person who planned all of this.””
I felt my heart stop.
“Then who did?””
The detective looked at the photograph.
May you like
Then he said:
“Someone who has been protecting the real mastermind for four years.””
