Chapter 6: The Wedding That Was Never Supposed to Happen
The drive to the venue took seventeen minutes.
It felt like seventeen hours.
Ryan drove while I sat in the passenger seat, calling Sarah repeatedly.
No answer.
I tried the venue manager.
Voicemail.
I called the hotel's legal contact, who had been helping with the wedding paperwork.
Nothing.
Finally, I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Emma?””
“We're going to the venue.””
“Why?””
I explained what Vanessa had told us.
He was silent for several seconds.
Then he said, “I'm coming.””
“No.””
“Emma—”
“Daniel, Richard is already there. We don't know what he's planning.””
“Exactly. I'm not letting you handle this alone.””
“I have Ryan.””
“And I have a right to be there.””
I closed my eyes.
He was right.
“Fine. But don't confront Richard without security.””
“I promise.””
I ended the call.
Ryan glanced at me.
“Did you tell him?””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
The venue was an elegant country estate about twenty minutes outside the city.
We had chosen it because of the gardens, the old stone architecture, and the enormous windows overlooking the lake.
I'd fallen in love with it the first time I visited.
Now, as our car approached the entrance, I noticed something wrong.
The main gate was closed.
A security guard stood beside the barrier.
Ryan lowered the window.
“Good morning. We're here for the Collins-Carter wedding.””
The guard checked his tablet.
“I'm sorry. The venue is closed to visitors until eight.””
Ryan showed him his identification.
“We're the wedding party.””
The guard looked at the screen again.
Then he frowned.
“I'm afraid there's been a change.””
“What change?”” I asked.
“The ceremony has been postponed.””
I stared at him.
“Who authorized that?””
“Mr. Hale.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Richard Hale?””
“Yes, ma'am. He said there was an administrative issue.””
I took out my phone.
“Call your manager.””
The guard hesitated.
“Ma'am—”
“Now.””
He made the call.
A moment later, he stepped away from the barrier.
Ryan leaned toward me.
“Stay in the car.””
“No.””
“Emma.””
“I'm not letting Richard decide whether I can enter my own wedding venue.””
The guard returned.
“Management says you can come through.””
The gate opened.
Ryan parked near the main entrance.
The venue was already decorated.
White flowers lined the walkway. The ceremony chairs stood in neat rows. A string quartet was setting up near the windows.
But there were no guests.
No bridesmaids.
No photographers.
And no sign of Sarah.
I stepped out.
A woman in a dark suit approached.
“Emma Collins?””
“Yes.””
“I'm Helen, the venue manager.””
“Where's Sarah?””
Helen glanced toward the building.
“She was here earlier.””
“Where is she now?””
“I don't know.””
“Where's Richard Hale?””
Helen looked uncomfortable.
“He's in the east conference room.””
I exchanged a glance with Ryan.
“Why?””
“He said he was handling an urgent legal matter.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Show me.””
Helen led us inside.
We passed the ballroom, the reception area, and the bridal preparation room.
The door stood slightly open.
I stopped.
Inside, the dressing table was covered with flowers, makeup brushes, and a bottle of champagne.
My wedding shoes were on the floor.
My veil had been folded over a chair.
But my marriage paperwork was missing.
I rushed to the desk.
The drawer was open.
The envelope was gone.
“Ryan.””
He came closer.
“What's missing?””
“The documents.””
Helen looked shocked.
“What documents?””
“The marriage paperwork.””
She swallowed.
“I thought Sarah had them.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you see anyone remove the envelope?””
“No.””
“Did Richard have access to this room?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
My blood ran cold.
“What was he doing?””
“He said he needed to check the seating arrangements.””
I stared at her.
“Did you let him?””
“He had a key.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course he did.
Richard had attended the engagement party. He had been listed as a VIP guest and had been given access to the venue.
He'd used that access to enter my bridal room.
I called the hotel manager.
“Martin, I need you to contact security and preserve every camera recording from this venue.””
“I'll arrange it.””
“Someone has taken my legal documents.””
His tone changed.
“Are you safe?””
“Yes.””
“I'm sending a security team.””
I hung up.
Ryan looked around the room.
“Where's your dress?””
I turned.
The garment bag was still hanging behind the door.
I unzipped it.
The dress was there.
Untouched.
I ran my fingers over the fabric.
Then I noticed a small mark near the waist.
A faint brown stain.
I leaned closer.
It smelled like coffee.
My stomach dropped.
“Someone spilled something on it.””
Ryan examined the stain.
“It's small.””
“It's not supposed to be there.””
I carefully removed the dress from the hanger.
The stain was on the inside lining, near the waist.
It hadn't reached the outer fabric.
But someone had deliberately tried to damage it.
I took photographs.
Then I called the dressmaker.
She answered after several rings.
“Emma?””
“I'm sorry to call so early. I need your help.””
I explained the stain.
She told me to bring the dress to her workshop immediately.
“I can probably remove it,” she said.
“But don't use anything on the fabric yourself.””
“Thank you.””
I hung up.
Ryan looked at me.
“Do you want to cancel?””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“Emma, you don't have to go through with this today.””
I looked around the room.
The flowers.
The veil.
The shoes.
The carefully arranged details.
Then I remembered Vanessa's words.
She won't arrive.
I lifted my chin.
“That's exactly what they want.””
Ryan nodded.
“Then let's make sure they don't get it.””
We heard footsteps outside.
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
He was wearing a dark suit, his tie undone, and his hair was still damp.
The moment he saw me, he crossed the room.
“Emma.””
I stepped into his arms.
He held me tightly.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he pulled back.
“Are you hurt?””
“No.””
“Did Richard touch you?””
“No.””
“Where is he?””
“In the east conference room.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“I'm going to talk to him.””
I caught his arm.
“Not alone.””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
We found Richard in the conference room.
He was standing beside the windows, speaking on his phone.
When he saw us, he ended the call.
“Emma.””
His smile was perfectly composed.
“Daniel. Good to see you.””
Daniel didn't return the greeting.
“Where are the marriage documents?””
Richard frowned.
“I'm not sure what you're referring to.””
“The paperwork removed from the bridal room.””
“Ah. That.””
I stepped forward.
“Where is it?””
Richard folded his arms.
“There's been a legal concern.””
“What legal concern?””
“Your employment situation.””
I stared at him.
“My employment has nothing to do with my wedding.””
“Unfortunately, it does.””
He opened a leather folder on the table.
Inside were several printed documents.
One had my name at the top.
*Notice of Internal Investigation.*
Another was a statement alleging that I had disclosed confidential Northbridge information to an outside party.
I looked at Richard.
“You forged my signature.””
His expression barely changed.
“That's a serious accusation.””
“I have the original document.””
“Do you?””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Richard reached into his folder and removed a second envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“This is the document you signed.””
I stared at it.
The signature looked like mine.
The date was correct.
Even the initials in the bottom corner were similar.
But something was wrong.
I leaned closer.
The document stated that I had voluntarily requested an unpaid leave of absence following my marriage.
It also included a clause authorizing Richard to appoint an interim department director.
I read the final paragraph.
My heart stopped.
*Employee agrees to transfer all project management authority and confidential records to the appointed interim director pending further review.*
I looked up.
“Who is the interim director?””
Richard smiled.
“Vanessa Reed.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You expect us to believe Emma signed this?””
Richard shrugged.
“I have a document bearing her signature.””
“It's forged,” I said.
“Then prove it.””
His confidence was infuriating.
I reached into my bag and pulled out my laptop.
I opened the PDF Julia had sent.
Then I turned the screen toward him.
“Do you recognize this?””
Richard's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
It was the bank transfer.
Twenty-five thousand dollars.
From Hale Strategic Consulting to Vanessa Reed.
Richard stared at the screen.
Then he looked at me.
“Where did you get that?””
“Does it matter?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He closed the folder.
“Emma, you're making a very serious mistake.””
“No. I think I finally understand the mistake I made twelve years ago.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“I trusted you.””
Richard sighed.
“You've become emotional. I understand. Weddings can be overwhelming.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Richard ignored him.
“Emma, I'm trying to help you. Your personal circumstances have created uncertainty in the department. We need someone reliable to maintain continuity.””
“You mean Vanessa.””
“She's qualified.””
“She has never managed a project in our industry.””
“She has experience.””
“She has a recruitment background.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“That's enough.””
I stared at him.
“Did you pay her to steal my credentials?””
“No.””
“Did you ask her to fabricate complaints against me?””
“No.””
“Did you arrange for Sarah to remove my marriage paperwork?””
Richard's expression became cold.
“Sarah made her own decisions.””
I laughed.
“So you admit she did it.””
He didn't answer.
Daniel took out his phone.
“I'm recording this conversation.””
Richard looked at him.
“That's unnecessary.””
“Then you shouldn't mind.””
Richard reached for the folder.
I moved it away.
“I'm not finished.””
He looked at me.
“What do you want?””
“The original documents. Every copy of my login information. Every communication between you and Vanessa. And a written explanation of the Northbridge payments.””
He gave a small laugh.
“You think you can demand that from me?””
“I think you should start worrying about who else has seen the evidence.””
For the first time, his composure slipped.
He looked at Daniel.
“You should be careful. Your company has a significant interest in Northbridge.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Are you threatening me?””
“I'm reminding you that business is complicated.””
“Not as complicated as fraud.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
Then he looked at me.
“Emma, if you continue down this road, you could lose everything.””
I stared at him.
“My job?””
“Your reputation. Your professional standing. Your future.””
I thought about the twelve years I'd given that company.
The weekends.
The late nights.
The projects I'd rescued.
The people I'd mentored.
And I realized something.
I'd been afraid of losing my position because I'd believed it represented everything I'd worked for.
But Richard had already decided to take it away.
He'd simply expected me to disappear quietly.
I stepped closer.
“You've already taken enough.””
Richard looked at me.
Then he said the one thing that made my blood run cold.
“You still haven't asked why Vanessa agreed to help me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He smiled faintly.
“Ask her what I promised her.””
“I know what you promised her.””
“No. You don't.””
He opened the folder again.
This time, he removed a photograph.
It showed Vanessa sitting in a hospital waiting room.
A young woman lay in a bed behind her.
I stared at the image.
“Who is that?””
Richard's smile disappeared.
“Her sister.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What about her?””
“Vanessa needed money.””
I looked at the photograph.
Then at him.
“How much?””
“More than she could afford.””
“Why?””
Richard closed the folder.
“Because her sister's medical bills were substantial.””
I felt something twist inside me.
It didn't excuse what Vanessa had done.
But it explained why she'd been so desperate.
“Did you use her sister to control her?””
Richard didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
Richard looked at him.
“Mr. Carter, I suggest you leave this matter alone.””
“Why?””
“Because I have information about your company that could make things very uncomfortable.””
Daniel stared at him.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced down.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
An email had arrived from his company's legal department.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: Northbridge Confidentiality Breach — Immediate Action Required.*
Below it was a scanned document.
It showed a confidential Northbridge cost report.
My name appeared in the header.
Daniel's company name appeared beneath it.
And at the bottom was a signature authorizing the release of the information.
Mine.
I stared at it.
“That's impossible.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Where did you get this?””
Richard slowly closed his folder.
“Ask your bride.””
I turned toward Daniel.
He was still looking at the document.
Then he looked at me.
“Emma, did you ever send this report to anyone?””
“No.””
“Did you ever authorize its release?””
“Never.””
Richard smiled.
“Then I suppose we have a problem.””
Before I could respond, the conference room door opened.
Sarah rushed inside.
Her face was pale.
“Emma, you need to see something.””
She held out her phone.
On the screen was a photograph of the wedding ceremony schedule.
The original schedule.
Except someone had crossed out Daniel's name.
In its place was another name.
*Richard Hale.*
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
Sarah's voice trembled.
“He told me the ceremony was being postponed because of a legal issue. But that's not what he was planning.””
Richard's expression changed.
“Sarah, leave.””
She ignored him.
“He wanted to make an announcement during the ceremony.””
“What announcement?””
Sarah looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
And whispered:
“He was going to tell everyone that Emma had been dismissed for fraud.””
Silence filled the room.
I stared at Richard.
He didn't deny it.
Instead, he looked at his watch.
“It's nearly eight,” he said.
Then he smiled.
“Perhaps we should let the guests decide who they believe.””
My phone began ringing.
The wedding coordinator.
I answered.
“Emma?””
“What's happening?””
Her voice was frantic.
“Richard has already sent something to the guests.””
“What?””
“A message.””
I looked at Richard.
He was watching me.
The coordinator continued.
“Emma, I'm so sorry. But people are starting to arrive, and they're asking whether the wedding has been canceled.””
I closed my eyes.
“What message did he send?””
She swallowed.
Then read it aloud.
“Dear guests, due to serious concerns regarding Emma Collins's professional conduct and personal circumstances, today's ceremony will not proceed as scheduled.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
The message continued.
“Further information will be provided at the venue.””
I looked at Daniel.
He took my hand.
Then he said quietly:
“Emma, whatever happens next, I'm still marrying you.””
I squeezed his fingers.
But before I could answer, my phone buzzed again.
This time, it was a message from Julia.
*I found the original Northbridge report.*
A second message followed.
*Emma, your signature isn't the only thing Richard forged.*
Then a photograph arrived.
It showed a bank account statement.
The account belonged to Daniel's company.
A payment of $250,000 had been transferred to an offshore consultancy.
The authorization carried Daniel's signature.
And the date was two days before our engagement party.
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone completely white.
“That's not my signature,” he whispered.
Richard slowly stood.
May you like
Then he said:
“Now you understand why I needed this wedding stopped.””
