Chapter 3: The Promise She Claimed Was Hers
I read Vanessa's message three times.
Then I looked at Daniel's name on my screen.
“Did you promise her something?””
“No.””
“Think carefully.””
“Emma, I have never promised Vanessa anything beyond being civil to her because she's your friend.””
“She's saying you promised her something before you proposed to me.””
Daniel went quiet.
I looked at the message again.
*Before he ever promised you anything.*
It was deliberately worded.
Designed to create doubt.
Designed to make me wonder whether our entire relationship had been built on a lie.
“Daniel?””
“I'm here.””
“Did you ever discuss marriage with Vanessa?””
“No.””
“Did you ever tell her you were unsure about me?””
“No.””
“Did you ever tell her you would leave me?””
“Never.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why does she have the rings?””
“I don't know. But we need to get them back.””
I looked at Martin.
He was already speaking into his radio.
“Security is handling the situation,” he said.
I covered the phone.
“Don't let anyone enter Room 816 without an officer present.””
Martin nodded.
Then I returned to Daniel.
“Don't go to her.””
“I wasn't planning to.””
“She wants you alone.””
“I know.””
“And if you go, she gets exactly what she wants.””
He exhaled.
“Then what do we do?””
I looked at the photograph of the ring box on my phone.
“We make sure she doesn't get to choose the next move.””
At 4:25 a.m., Martin informed us that Vanessa had refused to answer the door.
Security had knocked several times.
No response.
They could hear movement inside, but she wouldn't open it.
“Can you use the master key?”” I asked.
“Not without following the hotel's emergency access procedure.””
“Then follow it.””
Martin nodded.
Ryan stood beside me.
“I'll go with them.””
“No,” I said.
He frowned.
“Emma—”
“I need you here.””
“Why?””
“Because if Vanessa comes looking for me, I don't want to be alone.””
He studied my face, then nodded.
Martin returned to the hallway.
I heard the radio crackle.
“Security team, proceed.””
A few seconds later, there was a firm knock.
“Miss Reed, hotel security. Please open the door.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa's voice.
“I'm getting dressed.””
“Please open the door, ma'am.””
“I said I'm getting dressed!””
Ryan looked at me.
“She sounds nervous.””
I nodded.
A moment later, the lock clicked.
The door opened.
I couldn't see inside, but I heard Martin speak.
“Good morning, Miss Reed. We need to discuss an item reported missing from another guest room.””
Vanessa laughed.
“I'm sorry. What?””
“The wedding ring box.””
Another pause.
Then her voice became sharp.
“I have no idea what you're talking about.””
“May we come inside?””
“No.””
“Miss Reed, we're requesting permission to inspect the room.””
“I said no.””
Martin's voice remained calm.
“Then I'll need to contact hotel management and the police.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said something I could barely hear.
“Fine.””
I stood.
Ryan moved beside me.
“Where are you going?””
“To see her.””
“Emma, I don't think that's a good idea.””
“I'm not going to touch her. I just want to look her in the eyes.””
He hesitated.
Then he followed me into the corridor.
When we reached Room 816, the door was open.
Vanessa stood near the bed wearing a white silk robe.
Her hair was loose around her shoulders. Her makeup was gone, and she looked exhausted.
But she was still beautiful.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The second was the small velvet ring box on the desk.
I walked toward it.
Vanessa stepped in front of me.
“Don't touch that.””
I looked at her.
“Those are my wedding rings.””
“They're Daniel's rings.””
“They were purchased for our wedding.””
“Your wedding.””
I stared at her.
“Move.””
She folded her arms.
“You've always been so good at giving orders when you don't know what's happening.””
“Then explain it.””
Her eyes flickered toward Martin.
“Can we talk privately?””
“No.””
“Emma, please.””
“Not anymore.””
For a moment, something changed in her expression.
Then she laughed.
“You really believe this is all about the rings?””
I glanced at the box.
“I'm starting to think it isn't.””
Vanessa looked toward Ryan.
“Can you give us a minute?””
Ryan didn't move.
“No.””
She rolled her eyes.
“Of course. The protective brother.””
I took a step closer.
“Vanessa, why did you take them?””
She looked directly at me.
“Because I needed Daniel to come here.””
“You could have called him.””
“I did.””
“And he refused.””
Her jaw tightened.
“He doesn't understand.””
“What doesn't he understand?””
“That I was there before you.””
I stared at her.
“Before me?””
“Yes.””
“You met him because I introduced you.””
“Exactly.””
She said it as though it proved something.
“You brought him into my life,” she continued.
“You let me get to know him. You expected me to sit beside you while you planned a wedding with him.””
I shook my head.
“You were my friend.””
“I was your friend.””
The way she said it made the past tense sound deliberate.
I looked at the ring box.
“Give them back.””
Vanessa didn't move.
“Daniel needs to hear the truth.””
“Then tell me.””
“No. He needs to hear it from me.””
“He already knows what you did.””
She laughed.
“You think he told you everything?””
I felt a cold sensation move through my stomach.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Ask him what happened the night he proposed.””
I stopped breathing.
The night Daniel proposed.
It had been a beautiful evening in a small restaurant overlooking the river.
He'd arranged flowers on the table and placed a ring inside a little velvet box.
I remembered every detail.
The candlelight.
The music.
His trembling hands.
The way he'd looked at me and said he'd never been more certain about anything.
What could Vanessa possibly know about that night?
I took out my phone.
“I'm calling Daniel.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Go ahead.””
I pressed his name.
He answered immediately.
“Emma?””
“Vanessa says I should ask you what happened the night you proposed.””
There was a long silence.
Then Daniel said, “What?””
“You heard me.””
“Emma, don't listen to her.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa watched me closely.
I could see the satisfaction in her eyes.
Daniel finally spoke.
“She contacted me that afternoon.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“She said she needed to tell me something important before I proposed.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“What did she say?””
Daniel exhaled.
“She told me you were planning to reject me.””
The room went silent.
I felt the words land one by one.
“She said you were going to turn me down?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“She claimed you were afraid I would expect you to leave your job and move to Chicago.””
I blinked.
Daniel had been offered a promotion in Chicago several months earlier.
We'd discussed it together and decided he would decline.
It had never been a secret.
“She told you I didn't want to marry you because of Chicago?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me with an expression that was almost triumphant.
“What did you do?””
“I called her.””
“Why?””
“I wanted to know whether she'd misunderstood something.””
“And?””
“She told me you'd been crying. She said you were too embarrassed to tell me directly.””
I pressed my free hand against the desk.
“Did you still propose?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to hear it from you.””
My eyes filled.
“And you never told me?””
“I thought it was just another attempt to interfere. I didn't want to give her power over something that belonged to us.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was no longer smiling.
I understood something then.
Vanessa had been trying to create a version of me that Daniel couldn't trust.
A woman who was unfaithful.
A woman who was uncertain.
A woman who was financially desperate.
A woman who didn't want to marry him.
Every lie had the same purpose.
To make him question me.
To make him turn toward her.
“Vanessa,” I said quietly, “you've been lying to him about me for months.””
She rolled her eyes.
“I was trying to show him who you really are.””
“No. You were trying to convince him I was someone else.””
Her expression hardened.
“You don't understand what it's like.””
“What?””
“To love someone and watch him choose your best friend.””
I stared at her.
“You didn't love him before I met him.””
“I knew he was special.””
“You met him once at a university reunion.””
“And I remembered him.””
“That doesn't make him yours.””
Vanessa's face flushed.
“You've always had everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Everything?””
“Your career. Your family. Your perfect little apartment. Men who fall in love with you without even trying.””
I looked at her carefully.
“Is that what this is about?””
“You don't know how easy things have been for you.””
“Vanessa, I worked for everything I have.””
She shook her head.
“You always get what you want.””
“And you think destroying my wedding will make you happy?””
Her eyes filled.
For a second, I thought she might finally break.
Instead, she stepped toward me.
“You don't deserve him.””
I looked at her.
“That's not your decision.””
She pointed toward the ring box.
“Then why did he hesitate?””
The words struck harder than I expected.
I looked down.
“What?””
Vanessa smiled through her tears.
“He told me he wasn't sure about marrying you.””
I turned toward the phone.
“Daniel?””
He answered immediately.
“Emma, I need you to hear me.””
My heart was pounding.
“Did you?””
“No.””
“Did you ever tell her you weren't sure?””
“No.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Liar.””
Daniel's voice became firm.
“Emma, there was one conversation. I told Vanessa I was worried about how much pressure you were putting on yourself. I said I wanted you to enjoy the wedding, not spend every waking moment worrying about details.””
I remembered.
I'd been working late almost every night in the weeks before the engagement party.
Daniel had encouraged me to take a break.
It was a normal conversation.
Vanessa had turned it into something else.
I looked at her.
“You took a conversation about my stress and turned it into proof that Daniel didn't want to marry me.””
She didn't answer.
Martin stepped forward.
“Miss Reed, we need you to return the rings.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I'm not finished talking.””
“That's not your decision.””
For the first time, she seemed to realize she wasn't in control.
Her eyes moved toward the desk.
Then toward the door.
Ryan noticed.
“Don't even think about it.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed the ring box.
Before anyone could react, she pulled it against her chest.
“Daniel needs to come here.””
“Put it down,” Martin said.
“I'll give them to him.””
“You can hand them to hotel security.””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
She looked at me.
“Tell him to come.””
I stared at her.
“He isn't coming.””
“You don't know that.””
“I know him better than you do.””
Her expression twisted.
“You think so?””
“Yes.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Then ask him what he told me the first time we met.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
Vanessa looked almost delighted.
“He said I was beautiful.””
I blinked.
“That was years ago.””
“And he remembered me.””
I shook my head.
“That's not a promise.””
“He said I had beautiful eyes.””
“Vanessa, stop.””
“He said he liked talking to me.””
I looked at her.
“Was he supposed to propose because he complimented you?””
She flinched.
Then she said something that made the entire room go quiet.
“He told me he'd never marry someone who made him feel trapped.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked straight at me.
“He said he wanted someone who understood him. Someone who wouldn't make his life difficult.””
I looked at the phone.
“Daniel?””
He sounded confused.
“Emma, I never said that to her.””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“You did!””
“I told you I wanted a peaceful relationship. That doesn't mean I wanted you.””
“You said you liked women who were independent.””
“I said I admired Emma's independence.””
Vanessa's face went white.
For a moment, I thought she might throw the box.
Instead, she lowered it onto the desk.
Martin stepped forward and carefully retrieved it.
He opened the lid.
Both rings were inside.
I exhaled.
“Thank you.””
Martin handed the box to Ryan.
Ryan immediately slipped it into his jacket pocket.
Vanessa watched him.
Then she looked at me.
“Are you happy now?””
I stared at her.
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?””
“I wanted my best friend back.””
Something moved across her face.
But it disappeared almost immediately.
“You were never going to keep me,” she whispered.
I didn't answer.
Martin asked her to accompany security downstairs to speak with hotel management.
Vanessa refused at first.
Then she looked at me.
“Emma, don't do this.””
I held her gaze.
“You did this.””
She shook her head.
“You're going to regret humiliating me.””
I felt my voice become very quiet.
“You humiliated yourself when you decided my happiness was something you had to destroy.””
Security escorted her out.
Chloe appeared at the end of the corridor.
She looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“Emma, please.””
I didn't stop.
“Not now, Chloe.””
She followed us for several steps.
“I really didn't think she'd go this far.””
I turned around.
“Did you know she planned to take the rings?””
Chloe looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer hit like a slap.
“And you said nothing?””
“She told me it was temporary.””
“Did you know about the dress?””
Chloe nodded.
“Did you know about the hotel cameras?””
Another nod.
I stared at her.
“How many people did you think were supposed to suffer before you decided it was wrong?””
She started crying.
I turned away.
There was nothing left to say.
By 5:10 a.m., Vanessa had been taken downstairs for questioning by hotel management. Martin confirmed that the staff member involved in the room access had been identified and that the matter would be escalated to the police.
Ryan and I returned to our suite.
He placed the ring box on the table.
“Do you still want to get married?””
I looked at him.
The question was simple.
But the answer felt enormous.
“Yes.””
He studied my face.
“Are you sure?””
I picked up my phone.
Daniel had sent me six messages.
The last one read:
I love you. Nothing Vanessa says can change that. Please don't let tonight steal tomorrow from us.
I read it twice.
Then I called him.
He answered before the first ring finished.
“Emma?””
“Hi.””
His breathing changed.
“Are you okay?””
“I have the rings.””
“Thank God.””
“Daniel, I need to ask you something.””
“Anything.””
“Why did Vanessa think you would eventually choose her?””
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, “Because she misunderstood something I told her.””
“What?””
“Last month, she asked me what I thought would happen if you and I ever broke up.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you say?””
“I told her I would never want to lose you. I said if our relationship ended, I wouldn't be looking for someone else.””
I looked toward the window.
The sky was beginning to turn pale.
“And she thought that meant she had a chance?””
“She said she understood.””
I closed my eyes.
Daniel continued.
“Emma, I need you to know that I never encouraged her. I never flirted with her. I never made her believe there was a future between us.””
“I believe you.””
“Then why do you sound so far away?””
I swallowed.
“Because I just lost someone I thought would stand beside me tomorrow.””
He went quiet.
Then he said, “I'm sorry.””
I looked at the wedding dress.
“Daniel?””
“Yes?””
“I still want to marry you.””
His voice broke.
“Then I'll be waiting at the altar.””
For the first time that night, I smiled.
“Good.””
We ended the call.
Ryan poured me a glass of water.
“You should try to sleep.””
“I can't.””
“Then at least sit down.””
I sank onto the sofa.
My phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
I opened the message.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Just a photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside Daniel's office building.
But this time, she wasn't alone.
A man stood beside her.
His face was partially hidden by the reflection in the glass.
Underneath the photograph was a message.
*You think Vanessa planned this by herself?*
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
*Ask your maid of honour who paid for the hotel room.*
My fingers went cold.
I zoomed in on the photograph.
The man's hand was holding something.
A white envelope.
And on the corner of that envelope was a logo I recognized immediately.
The logo belonged to the company where I worked.
My company.
I looked at Ryan.
“Something's wrong.””
He came closer.
“What now?””
I turned the phone toward him.
He studied the photograph.
Then his expression changed.
“Emma…”
“What?””
He pointed at the man standing beside Vanessa.
I enlarged the image again.
The reflection revealed just enough of his face.
Ryan whispered the name.
“Isn't that your boss?””
I stared at the photograph.
It was Richard Hale.
The man who had hired me twelve years ago.
The man who had attended my engagement party.
The man who had given a speech about how lucky Daniel was to marry someone as capable as me.
And suddenly, I remembered something.
Three weeks earlier, Richard had called me into his office.
He'd closed the door, offered me a seat, and asked whether I was planning to leave the company after my wedding.
I'd laughed and told him absolutely not.
He'd smiled.
Then he'd said:
“Good. Because Emma, there's something about your future here that we need to discuss before you become Mrs. Daniel Carter.””
At the time, I'd assumed he was talking about a promotion.
Now I wondered whether Vanessa had been involved in that conversation too.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, the message contained a name.
*Richard Hale wasn't paying Vanessa to steal your fiancé.*
I stared at the words.
May you like
A second message appeared.
*He was paying her to make sure you never came back to work.*
