Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Door

I didn't answer.

Vanessa knocked again.

“Emma?””

Her voice carried the familiar warmth I'd heard thousands of times.

The same voice that had comforted me after my father died.

The same voice that had whispered encouragement when I was too nervous to accept a promotion.

The same voice that had told me I deserved a man who loved me without hesitation.

Now it sounded like a stranger wearing someone else's face.

I quietly activated the hotel's emergency assistance feature on my phone.

Then I stepped away from the connecting door.

“Emma, come on,” Vanessa said.

“I know you're awake.””

I remained silent.

A small metallic sound followed.

Something scraped against the lock.

My stomach tightened.

She was trying to open it.

“Vanessa,” I finally said, keeping my voice steady.

“It's nearly three in the morning.””

“I know. I just need five minutes.””

“We can talk tomorrow.””

“No. We need to talk now.””

I glanced at the door handle.

It moved slightly.

Then stopped.

“What's wrong?”” I asked.

A sigh.

“Chloe told me you were upset.””

“Chloe?””

“She said you were awake. Apparently, you heard us talking.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

There it was.

The first confirmation.

They knew I'd heard them.

I forced myself to sound confused.

“I heard some noise. I couldn't make out what anyone was saying.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“Oh, Emma. Don't do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend you don't know.””

I stared at the door.

“Know what?””

A pause.

Then she said, “That Daniel and I have something to discuss.””

I almost laughed.

“You and Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“What exactly do you have to discuss with my fiancé at three in the morning?””

Her voice changed.

The sweetness disappeared.

“Don't make this ugly.””

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

“I'm not the one standing outside another woman's bedroom at three in the morning.””

“I'm your best friend.””

“Then act like it.””

Another silence.

When she spoke again, her tone was almost pleading.

“Emma, I have spent years watching you make the same mistakes.””

I frowned.

“What mistakes?””

“Choosing men who don't understand you. Making yourself smaller. Pretending everything is perfect because you're afraid of being alone.””

I looked at my wedding dress.

“Daniel understands me.””

“No, he doesn't.””

“You don't know what Daniel and I have.””

“I know him better than you think.””

The confidence in her voice was chilling.

I took a screenshot of the recording file and sent it to my brother, Ryan.

Then I typed:

She knows I heard her. Keep the security manager with you. Do not let her near the dress or rings.

Ryan replied immediately.

I'm coming upstairs. Stay away from that door.

Outside, Vanessa sighed.

“Can you please open this?””

“No.””

“Emma.””

“Goodnight, Vanessa.””

Her footsteps didn't move.

Instead, she said quietly, “You know, I almost feel sorry for you.””

I didn't respond.

“You've spent your whole life believing people are loyal just because you are.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Go to bed, Vanessa.””

“Tomorrow is going to be difficult for you.””

I stared at the door.

“Is that a threat?””

“No. It's a warning.””

Then her footsteps finally retreated.

I waited until I heard the connecting door in the next room close.

Only then did I move.

My phone rang.

Ryan.

“Emma, are you okay?””

“I'm fine.””

“Don't say that unless it's true.””

I looked at the door.

“I'm not sure what I am.””

“I'm coming up.””

“Ryan, don't do anything stupid.””

“I'm your brother. Doing stupid things is practically part of my job.””

Despite everything, I smiled.

Then he added, “The hotel manager is with me. We need to move your belongings.””

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because I want the cameras checked first.””

A few minutes later, there was a knock at my main door.

I checked the peephole.

Ryan stood beside a middle-aged man wearing a dark hotel uniform.

I opened it.

My brother took one look at my face and pulled me into his arms.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

I held on for a moment.

Then I stepped back.

The hotel manager introduced himself as Martin Hayes.

“Miss Collins, I understand there's been a security concern.””

“Someone has been attempting to access my room through the connecting door.””

Martin looked troubled.

“Do you have reason to believe she has a key?””

“I heard the lock being manipulated.””

He turned to Ryan.

“Mr. Collins, could you wait here with your sister while I have the security team inspect the adjoining room?””

Ryan nodded.

Martin spoke into his radio.

A few minutes later, two security officers arrived.

One checked the main door.

The other examined the connecting lock.

Then he frowned.

“Sir?””

Martin approached.

“What is it?””

The officer pointed toward the lock.

“There's a second access mechanism on this side. Someone could potentially open it with a staff override.””

“Was that used tonight?”” I asked.

The officer looked at Martin.

“We'll need to check the access records.””

Martin nodded.

“We'll do that immediately.””

I showed them the recording.

Martin listened without interrupting.

When Vanessa's voice mentioned the security cameras, his expression hardened.

“This is extremely serious.””

“I know.””

He looked at me.

“Miss Collins, I recommend relocating you to another suite immediately.””

“Already arranged.””

I explained that my cousin had booked another room under her name.

Martin offered to arrange a private escort.

Ryan collected my suitcase while I packed my essentials.

Before leaving, I looked at the wedding dress.

The garment bag hung untouched.

I reached for it.

Ryan stopped me.

“Let the staff handle it.””

“I want to check it myself.””

He unzipped the bag just enough for me to see the fabric.

Everything appeared normal.

Then I noticed a small envelope tucked into the inner pocket.

It hadn't been there when I'd hung the dress earlier.

I pulled it out.

My name was written across the front in Vanessa's handwriting.

Emma.

Ryan looked over my shoulder.

“What's that?””

“I don't know.””

I opened it.

Inside was a folded note.

Three sentences.

You always wanted a perfect wedding.

I hope you enjoy what happens when you get one.

Some things cannot be undone.

Ryan's expression changed.

“She's lost her mind.””

I turned the paper over.

There was something else.

A small printed photograph.

It showed Daniel standing outside his office building.

Vanessa was beside him.

Her hand was resting on his chest.

The date printed beneath the photograph was February 17.

I stared at it.

Daniel had said she'd tried to kiss him two months ago.

But this photograph was from February.

And the way Vanessa was standing, her face tilted toward his, made the picture look intimate.

Ryan took it from me.

“Do you know about this?””

“Daniel mentioned that she had approached him before.””

“Then why didn't he tell you?””

“He said he didn't want to destroy my friendship.””

Ryan let out a bitter laugh.

“Well, that's one friendship that's definitely over.””

I slipped the photograph into my bag.

Martin returned.

“The room is ready. We'll move you now.””

As we stepped into the hallway, I noticed Chloe standing near the elevators.

She wore a pale pink silk robe and held a coffee cup.

Her eyes widened when she saw us.

“Emma?””

I stopped.

“Chloe.””

She looked at the security officers.

“What's going on?””

“I'm changing rooms,” I said.

“Why?””

“Ask Vanessa.””

Her face turned pale.

“Emma, listen—”

I walked toward her.

“Did you know about the dress?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Emma, I didn't think she'd actually do anything.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Chloe swallowed.

“Vanessa said she was going to scare you. She said she wanted Daniel to reconsider.””

“And the rings?””

“I don't know anything about the rings.””

I studied her face.

“Did you hear her say she planned to separate me from Daniel?””

Chloe nodded slowly.

“Then why didn't you stop her?””

She started crying.

“I didn't want to get involved.””

I looked at her for a long moment.

“You were involved the moment you laughed.””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I turned away.

Ryan walked beside me as we entered the elevator.

When the doors closed, he spoke.

“Do you want me to call Daniel?””

“No.””

“Emma, he deserves to know what's happening.””

“He knows.””

Ryan frowned.

“What?””

I told him about the phone call, the photograph, and Vanessa's latest threat.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he rubbed his forehead.

“Something doesn't add up.””

“What?””

“Why would Vanessa leave a note inside your dress if she knew you might discover it?””

I stared at the elevator doors.

“Maybe she wanted me to find it.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

The elevator opened.

We entered the new suite.

It was smaller than the original bridal suite but beautiful. White curtains framed the windows, and a vase of fresh flowers sat on the table.

I didn't care about any of it.

I placed my phone on the desk and opened the hotel app.

“Martin,” I said, “can you check whether anyone accessed my room before midnight?””

“Of course.””

“And can you check the room where Vanessa is staying?””

He nodded.

“I'll have security review the records.””

Ryan began unpacking my things.

I opened my laptop.

The first thing I did was log into the wedding planning account.

Vanessa had been given administrative access months earlier so she could coordinate suppliers.

I reviewed the vendor list.

Florist.

Photographer.

Caterer.

Musicians.

Transport.

Every important detail was there.

Then I noticed something strange.

The ceremony schedule had been modified at 8:42 p.m.

The original arrival time for the bridal party was 9:30 a.m.

It had been changed to 8:15 a.m.

I hadn't approved that.

I checked the revision history.

The change had been made using Vanessa's account.

I opened the venue notes.

A new instruction had been added.

Bride to arrive through service entrance. Maid of honour to collect dress from hotel and deliver directly to venue.

I felt my blood run cold.

“Ryan?””

He came over.

“What's wrong?””

I showed him the screen.

He read it twice.

“She was going to take your dress.””

“And possibly the rings.””

Ryan shook his head.

“She's planning to control everything.””

I continued scrolling.

There was another change.

The florist delivery had been redirected to the service entrance.

The photographer had been instructed to wait in a different room.

The bridal car had been reassigned.

I leaned back.

Vanessa hadn't simply been planning to ruin my wedding.

She'd been building an entirely separate version of it.

One in which she controlled where I went, what I wore, and when Daniel saw me.

I took screenshots of every change.

Then I opened the vendor contact list and began making calls.

The florist answered first.

“Good morning, Emma.””

“Hi, Sarah. I need to confirm something. Did you receive a delivery instruction from Vanessa Reed?””

“Yes. She asked us to bring everything to the service entrance.””

“Please ignore that instruction. All deliveries must go through the main entrance. Nobody except me or my brother is authorized to change the schedule.””

There was a pause.

“Is everything all right?””

“Not particularly. But we're handling it.””

I called the photographer next.

Then the venue coordinator.

Then the transportation company.

One by one, I removed Vanessa's access.

By 4:05 a.m., she no longer controlled a single wedding supplier.

Ryan watched me work.

“You're frighteningly calm.””

“I've spent twelve years fixing other people's disasters.””

“This is different.””

I stopped typing.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“It is.””

At 4:12, Martin returned with a security report.

“Miss Collins, we've reviewed the access records.””

I looked up.

“What did you find?””

He placed a printed sheet on the desk.

“Your original suite was accessed at 12:38 a.m. using a staff override.””

“Who accessed it?””

“We're still confirming the employee's identity.””

“Was anything removed?””

Martin hesitated.

“That's what concerns us.””

He turned the page.

A list of items appeared.

One entry had been highlighted.

*Wedding ring box — removed from bedside drawer.*

I stared at it.

The rings were gone.

Ryan swore under his breath.

“Where are they?””

Martin looked uncomfortable.

“We believe they may have been transferred to another room.””

“Which room?””

He turned the page again.

The room number was printed in black.

Room 816.

Vanessa's room.

I looked at Ryan.

Then at Martin.

“Can you get them back?””

“We're arranging that now.””

Before he could leave, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Emma?””

“I'm here.””

“Have you found the rings?””

I frowned.

“How did you know?””

He took a shaky breath.

“Because Vanessa just sent me a photograph.””

“What photograph?””

“The ring box.””

My stomach tightened.

“What's she doing with it?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“She says if I want the rings back, I need to meet her alone at the hotel before sunrise.””

I looked at the clock.

4:16 a.m.

Then another message arrived.

May you like

This time, it was from Vanessa.

*I think it's time you learned what Daniel promised me before he ever promised you anything.*
