Chapter 7: The Brother Nobody Mentioned
My father spent the next hour sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the photograph.
He didn't touch his coffee.
He didn't blink much.
He just kept looking at the same image.
My mother.
And a man he believed had been dead for decades.
Finally, I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Dad, what happened to him?""
My father looked up.
"Robert and Elaine had a complicated relationship.""
"Complicated how?""
He sighed.
"They fought often.""
"About what?""
He looked at the photograph.
"Money.""
That word again.
Money.
It seemed like every secret in my family eventually led back to money.
Claire sat across from us.
"Elaine never trusted Robert.""
My father looked at her.
"You knew?""
Claire nodded.
"She told me everything.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Claire's eyes filled with regret.
"Because Elaine made me promise.""
My father laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
"Everyone had promises with my wife except me.""
Nobody spoke.
I understood why he was hurt.
Everyone had protected secrets.
Everyone had decided what he could handle.
And somehow, he was always the last person to know.
Claire placed another folder on the table.
"This was found with the letter.""
My father opened it.
Inside were copies of financial records.
Old ones.
Very old.
My eyes moved across the pages.
There were transfers.
Accounts.
Names.
Then I saw something familiar.
Denise.
My father noticed it too.
"Why is her name here?""
Claire looked at me.
"Because Denise knew Robert.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
My father stood.
"No.""
Claire didn't look away.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
My father walked toward the window.
"How?""
"I don't know exactly.""
"Then why are you telling us?""
"Because Elaine believed Denise was connected to Robert's disappearance.""
I felt a chill.
"Disappearance?""
My father turned around.
"You said he died.""
Claire shook her head.
"No.""
My father's face changed.
"Then what happened?""
Claire whispered:
"Robert vanished.""
Nobody spoke.
My entire understanding of my family shifted.
A man everyone believed was dead.
A stepmother hiding money.
A mother who left warnings.
And now a missing uncle.
My father sat down slowly.
"Why would Elaine hide this from me?""
Claire looked at him.
"Because she thought you would confront Robert.""
"And?""
"She thought he would hurt you.""
That afternoon, my father searched through old boxes from the attic.
For hours, we looked through photographs, letters, and documents.
Then I found something.
A small notebook hidden inside an old picture frame.
The cover was worn.
My mother's handwriting was on it.
Maya's questions.
I opened it.
The first pages were memories.
Things about me.
My first steps.
My first day of school.
Then the entries changed.
The final pages were different.
Fearful.
My mother wrote:
"Robert contacted Denise again.""
I looked at my father.
"Again?""
He took the notebook.
His face tightened.
The next entry was worse.
"Denise says she only wants to help, but I don't believe her.""
Then another.
"Arthur cannot know yet.""
My father closed his eyes.
He looked devastated.
"She was protecting me.""
I touched his arm.
"Maybe.""
He looked at me.
"But she was scared.""
That night, someone knocked on our door.
It was almost midnight.
My father and I exchanged a glance.
Nobody visited that late.
He opened the door.
And standing there was a man.
Older.
Gray hair.
A scar across his cheek.
My entire body froze.
Because I recognized him.
Not from memory.
From the photograph.
The man everyone said was dead.
He looked directly at my father.
Then at me.
May you like
And said:
"Arthur, we need to talk about Elaine.""
