Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Bill

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

"My mother?""

The word felt impossible.

My mother had been dead for six years.

My father sat beside me.

"I know how this sounds.""

"No," I whispered.

"It doesn't make sense.""

He opened the folder again.

"There was an emergency contact attached to your hospital file.""

My fingers trembled.

"Who?""

He looked at the paper.

"Elaine Carter.""

My mother's name.

I stared at it until the letters blurred.

"That's impossible.""

My father looked equally confused.

"Your mother passed away.""

I nodded.

"Then how did she sign anything?""

Neither of us had an answer.

We went to Grady Memorial Hospital that afternoon.

The woman at the records desk looked uncomfortable when we explained.

After several minutes, she returned with a file.

"There may have been a mistake," she said.

My father opened the folder.

Then he stopped.

Inside was a copy of my admission form.

My mother's name was listed as my emergency contact.

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

A note I recognized instantly.

My mother's handwriting.

I touched the page.

She always wrote her M's with a long curve.

Just like this.

My father's voice shook.

"Maya.""

I read the note.

"Please do not let Denise make decisions about Maya's care.""

My entire body went numb.

"What?""

The hospital worker looked away.

"Your mother left instructions years ago.""

"Years ago?""

The woman nodded.

"She created a medical protection file before she passed away.""

My father stared.

"Why?""

The woman hesitated.

"Because she was concerned about your stepmother.""

The drive home was silent.

When we arrived, Denise was waiting.

She looked nervous.

"You went to the hospital?""

My father stepped inside.

"Yes.""

She forced a smile.

"Arthur, I can explain.""

"No.""

His voice was different.

Cold.

"Now I explain.""

Denise backed away.

"What did you find?""

My father placed the file on the table.

"My wife's warning.""

Denise's face changed.

"What?""

"My first wife knew.""

The room went silent.

Denise looked at me.

Then at the papers.

"You don't understand.""

"Then help me understand.""

She said nothing.

My father laughed bitterly.

"Six years. Six years I trusted you with my daughter.""

"Arthur—"

"No.""

He pointed toward the file.

"My wife knew something was wrong before she died.""

Denise's eyes filled with anger.

"She hated me.""

I flinched.

My father stepped forward.

"Don't.""

"She always thought I was replacing her.""

"Don't talk about my wife like that.""

The argument was interrupted by a knock.

Everyone froze.

My father opened the door.

A woman stood outside.

She looked familiar.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

She looked directly at me.

"Maya?""

I stared.

"Who are you?""

The woman swallowed.

"My name is Elaine's sister.""

My father's face changed.

"My wife's sister?""

The woman nodded.

Then she held out a small envelope.

"Your mother left this for you.""

My hands shook as I took it.

On the front were four words.

"For Maya, when she finally knows.""

I opened my mouth.

But before I could open the envelope, Denise whispered something behind me.

Something that made my father turn around.

"Arthur...""

May you like

Her voice was trembling.

"There's something you need to know about Elaine's death.""
