Chapter 2: The Daughter Who Spoke

Nobody moved after Tasha's confession.

Denise's face became completely still.

That scared me more than if she had screamed.

Because I knew that expression.

It was the expression she wore before punishing someone.

"Tasha," Denise said softly.

Too softly.

"Go upstairs.""

Tasha shook her head.

"No.""

The entire room seemed to hold its breath.

My father stepped closer.

"Tasha, what did you see?""

She wiped her eyes.

"Mom knew you were coming home early.""

Denise's mouth tightened.

"Stop.""

But Tasha continued.

"She knew you would check the accounts eventually.""

Marcus looked confused.

"What are you talking about?""

Tasha turned toward him.

"Mom spent Maya's money.""

Marcus laughed nervously.

"What?""

"The money Dad gave us.""

Nobody spoke.

My father looked at Denise.

"Is that true?""

Denise crossed her arms.

"Don't listen to her. She's upset.""

Tasha shook her head.

"I'm not upset. I'm tired.""

That sentence landed harder than a scream.

She pulled out her phone.

"I saved screenshots.""

Denise's eyes widened.

For the first time, she looked desperate.

"You went through my phone?""

"No," Tasha replied.

"You left your laptop open.""

My father took the phone.

I watched his face change as he read.

The messages.

The receipts.

The conversations.

Denise trying to hide purchases.

Denise telling her children not to mention my clothes.

Denise writing:

"Arthur doesn't need to know. Maya is old enough to understand sacrifices.""

My father's jaw tightened.

"Sacrifices?""

Denise stepped forward.

"Arthur, you don't understand.""

"No.""

His voice was quiet.

"I understand perfectly.""

She shook her head.

"You were gone all the time. Someone had to make decisions.""

"You decided my daughter didn't deserve what I provided?""

"That's not what happened.""

"Then explain.""

Denise opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the first time I saw her without an answer.

My father turned to me.

"Maya, why didn't you tell me?""

I looked down.

Because the truth was embarrassing.

Because I thought he would blame me.

Because I thought losing another parent was worse than being ignored.

"I didn't want you to fight with her.""

His expression softened.

"Sweetheart.""

He walked toward me.

"You thought protecting my marriage was your job?""

I looked away.

"I didn't want another family to fall apart.""

My father's eyes filled with pain.

"Maya, it was never your job to hold us together.""

That night, I slept in my old room and listened to voices downstairs.

My father and Denise argued for hours.

Not screaming.

Just disappointment.

And somehow, that was worse.

The next morning, my father knocked on my door.

"We need to talk.""

I sat up.

"What happened?""

He looked exhausted.

"I found something else.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

He held a folder.

"I checked every payment Denise made from the account.""

He opened it.

"There are medical payments.""

I frowned.

"Medical payments?""

He nodded.

"But not yours.""

My heart started beating faster.

"Whose?""

My father looked toward the hallway.

Then he said a name.

"Someone named Elaine Carter.""

My blood ran cold.

Carter.

My mother's last name.

And before I could ask who that was, my father's phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

"Maya...""

"What?""

He slowly lowered the phone.

"The hospital just called.""

My hands turned cold.

"They found the person who authorized your treatment.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

My father looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

"It was your mother.""
