Chapter 7: The Secret Behind My Husband's Signature

“Your wife knows everything.””

Sienna's words hung in the air long after she stopped speaking.

Julian stared at her, struggling to reconcile the woman standing before him with the secretary he'd trusted for two years.

“What exactly does Clara know?””

Sienna shook her head.

“You should ask her yourself.””

“I just did. She told me to ask you.””

“Then perhaps you should consider why she isn't telling you everything.””

Julian's expression hardened.

“Stop playing games.””

“I'm not playing games, Julian. I'm trying to keep you from making a decision you'll regret.””

He laughed bitterly.

“That's interesting advice coming from someone who concealed financial arrangements from me.””

“I didn't conceal them to hurt you.””

“You've said that three times. It doesn't make it true.””

Sienna walked toward the window, wrapping her arms around herself.

For the first time since they'd arrived in Maui, she seemed uncomfortable in the luxurious suite.

The ocean view she'd admired earlier no longer held her attention.

Julian returned to the documents and studied the signature at the bottom of the authorization.

He knew the handwriting.

He knew the name.

And he knew the person had been involved in his life long before he'd met Sienna.

It was his father, Richard Whitmore.

Richard had retired from the family business several years earlier, leaving Julian to manage the company he'd spent decades building.

Although they occasionally disagreed about business decisions, Julian had always believed his father wanted him to succeed.

Richard had taught him to negotiate.

He'd introduced him to important investors.

He'd warned him against trusting people who promised easy profits.

Now Julian was looking at a document suggesting that his father had authorized a financial arrangement connected to the Maui acquisition.

An arrangement Julian hadn't known existed.

He picked up his phone and called him.

Richard answered on the fourth ring.

“Julian? You're in Hawaii already?””

“Dad, I need to ask you something.””

“What's wrong?””

“Did you authorize a payment connected to the Maui development?””

A pause followed.

“What payment?””

“An authorization dated September 12. It involves Daniel Mercer and an undisclosed beneficiary interest.””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Julian felt his stomach tighten.

“Dad?””

“Where did you get that information?””

“That's not what I asked.””

“Julian, these matters are complicated.””

“Then explain them.””

Richard exhaled slowly.

“I told you there were outstanding obligations connected to the original development agreement.””

“You told me Daniel had withdrawn from the project.””

“He withdrew from the negotiations.””

“That's not the same thing.””

“No, it isn't.””

Julian closed his eyes.

“Did you authorize the payment?””

Another silence.

Then Richard said, “Yes.””

The single word landed harder than Julian expected.

He gripped the edge of the table.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel had a legitimate claim that needed to be settled.””

“Then why wasn't it disclosed?””

“Because the investors were threatening to abandon the acquisition if the dispute became public.””

“So you decided to conceal it from me?””

“I decided to protect the company.””

Julian let out a disbelieving laugh.

“You spent my entire childhood telling me that a business built on dishonesty would eventually collapse.””

“And I still believe that.””

“Then how could you do this?””

Richard's voice hardened.

“Because sometimes leadership means making difficult decisions that other people don't understand.””

“Did you tell Sienna to process the payments?””

“I told her to coordinate the paperwork.””

“And did you tell her to keep me out of it?””

Richard didn't answer.

Julian felt something inside him begin to fracture.

His father had taught him everything he knew about business.

He'd trusted him with his company's future.

And now he was discovering that the principles Richard had preached might not have applied when the stakes became high enough.

“Dad, did you know about the beneficiary arrangement?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“Yes.””

“Who was the beneficiary?””

“I can't explain that over the phone.””

“Why not?””

“Because I don't know who else is listening.””

Julian looked toward Sienna.

She stood motionless beside the window.

“I'm alone,” he said.

“No, you're not.””

The answer startled him.

“What does that mean?””

Richard sighed.

“Julian, listen carefully. You need to stop looking at individual documents and understand the entire agreement.””

“Then send it to me.””

“I can't.””

“Can't or won't?””

“Both, at this moment.””

Julian clenched his jaw.

“Dad, I need the truth.””

“You need to understand that the company could be exposed to substantial losses if the acquisition collapses.””

“And if we proceed without disclosing the arrangement?””

“That's precisely why I'm asking you to be careful.””

Julian stared at the ocean.

His father wasn't denying the evidence.

He wasn't even pretending that the arrangement didn't exist.

He was asking Julian to protect the company before protecting himself.

It was the same choice Julian had made repeatedly throughout his marriage.

He'd told Clara that work had to come first.

He'd expected her to accept every inconvenience because he believed his professional responsibilities justified them.

Now he was hearing the same argument from the man who had taught him to think that way.

“I'm suspending my involvement until my attorney reviews everything,” Julian said.

Richard's voice sharpened.

“You cannot do that without understanding the consequences.””

“Then help me understand them.””

“I will speak to you when you return.””

“No. We speak now.””

Richard fell silent.

Julian waited.

Finally, his father said, “The beneficiary is connected to your marriage.””

Julian stopped breathing for a moment.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Who?””

“I won't discuss that until I've reviewed what you have.””

Julian's heart began pounding.

His marriage.

The Maui agreement.

The undisclosed payments.

He thought of Clara's mysterious messages and the way she'd calmly walked away at JFK.

She'd known something was waiting for him in Hawaii.

Something she hadn't wanted to explain in the crowded airport terminal.

“Dad, does Clara have an interest in this agreement?””

Richard didn't answer.

That silence told Julian more than he wanted to know.

“Does she?””

“I need to speak with her before I answer.””

Julian stared at the phone.

Then he ended the call.

For several seconds, he remained motionless.

Sienna finally approached him.

“Now you understand.””

He looked at her.

“Understand what?””

“Why I came with you.””

He studied her face.

“You knew my father had authorized the payment.””

“I knew he was involved.””

“And you thought bringing you to Hawaii would help?””

“I thought I could get you to listen before Clara gave you an incomplete version of the story.””

Julian shook his head.

“You could have told me everything in New York.””

“You wouldn't have listened.””

“You didn't try.””

“Because I knew you'd choose your wife over me.””

The words came out before she could stop herself.

Julian stared at her.

There it was again.

That strange possessiveness.

That assumption that she had a claim on his attention that extended beyond her professional responsibilities.

“You're my secretary,” he said quietly.

Sienna's face changed.

For two years, she'd been more than an employee in the private world she'd built around Julian.

She'd managed his schedule, anticipated his needs, and positioned herself as the person who understood him best.

She'd mistaken access for intimacy.

And Julian had encouraged that mistake because he enjoyed being admired.

But he had never promised her the place she now seemed to believe belonged to her.

“You made me feel like I mattered,” she whispered.

“You were important to my work.””

“That isn't all I meant.””

He looked away.

He could have denied that he'd crossed emotional boundaries.

He could have blamed her for misinterpreting his behavior.

Instead, he remembered the late-night messages, the private dinners he'd described as business meetings, and the compliments he'd offered when Clara wasn't around.

He had allowed Sienna to believe that she occupied a special place in his life.

That didn't excuse what she'd done.

But it forced him to confront his own responsibility.

“I should have established clearer boundaries,” he admitted.

“But that doesn't give you the right to conceal financial arrangements from me.””

Sienna's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't want to lose everything.””

“Lose what?””

She looked at the envelope.

Then she whispered, “The beneficiary arrangement wasn't created for Daniel.””

Julian's blood ran cold.

“Who was it created for?””

Sienna opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, Julian's phone rang.

It was Clara.

He answered immediately.

“Clara, my father says the beneficiary is connected to our marriage.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me who it is.””

“I will, but first you need to listen carefully.””

Julian sat down.

For the first time that day, he didn't interrupt her.

“The agreement contains a financial interest that predates our wedding,” Clara explained.

“Someone arranged for that interest to remain hidden while the acquisition moved forward.””

“Who?””

“Someone who believed that once the agreement was finalized, nobody would be able to challenge it without risking a major financial loss.””

Julian glanced at Sienna.

“And you found out?””

“I found evidence. I didn't have the full picture when I left JFK.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I needed you to see the documents for yourself. If I'd confronted you at the airport, you would have accused me of trying to sabotage your business.””

He couldn't deny it.

She continued.

“Julian, the beneficiary isn't the only problem. There's a second agreement that explains why the payments were structured the way they were.””

“Where is it?””

“Ask your father.””

“He says he can't discuss it.””

“Then he's still trying to protect someone.””

Julian looked at Sienna.

Her eyes had widened.

Clara's voice became quieter.

“And there's something else you need to know. The second agreement contains a signature that should never have been there.””

“Whose signature?””

“Mine.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Julian stared at the phone.

“That's impossible.””

“I never signed it.””

He felt the blood drain from his face.

“Clara, are you saying someone forged your signature?””

“I'm saying someone used my name to support an agreement I knew nothing about.””

He looked at the papers scattered across the table.

His father's signature.

Sienna's emails.

Daniel's name.

And now Clara's.

Every new piece of information seemed to reveal another layer of deception.

“Where's the second agreement?”” he asked.

“I don't have the original.””

“Who does?””

A pause followed.

Then Clara answered.

“Your father.””

Julian stood abruptly.

He looked at the door as though Richard might suddenly appear on the other side.

But the hallway remained silent.

For the first time, Julian understood that his father wasn't merely trying to protect the company.

He was protecting a secret that had somehow become connected to Julian's marriage.

And if Clara was telling the truth, someone had used her identity without her knowledge.

Someone who believed the truth would remain buried.

Someone who had never imagined that the woman they were trying to deceive would eventually uncover the evidence.

Julian tightened his grip on the phone.

“Clara, what happens next?””

Her answer was immediate.

“Tomorrow morning, the original agreement will be presented to the people who have the authority to investigate it.””

His heart sank.

“Who arranged that?””

“I did.””

He closed his eyes.

“You've arranged a meeting?””

“Yes.””

“With whom?””

“Everyone who needs to see the documents.””

Julian looked at Sienna.

She had begun to tremble.

And suddenly, he understood why she'd been so desperate to stop him from opening the envelope.

Tomorrow, the secret would no longer belong to the people who had hidden it.

Tomorrow, the truth would have witnesses.

May you like

And one of those witnesses would be the person Julian had spent his entire life believing he could trust without question.

His father.
