Chapter 6: The Name Beneath the Contract
Julian had spent most of his professional life believing that problems could be solved with money, influence, and the right phone call.
If a deal became difficult, he hired another consultant.
If an investor hesitated, he offered better terms.
If a colleague questioned his judgment, he reminded them of his company's record of success.
He had built an identity around being the man who could see trouble coming and prevent it before anyone else noticed.
But as he stood in the Maui suite, staring at the documents Clara had sent, he realized he had failed to recognize a danger that had been sitting beside him for nearly two years.
Sienna watched him pace between the windows and the table.
“Have you called your attorney yet?”” she asked.
He ignored her.
His phone was pressed against his ear as he tried to reach the legal adviser handling the acquisition.
The call went unanswered.
He tried another number.
This time, someone picked up.
“Julian? I wasn't expecting to hear from you.””
“I need you to review a document immediately.””
“What kind of document?””
“An email concerning the Maui agreement, a payment authorization, and an undisclosed beneficiary interest.””
The other person went quiet.
“Where did you get those documents?””
“That's not important right now.””
“Actually, it is.””
Julian looked at Sienna.
She was standing near the bedroom door, pretending not to listen.
“I'll explain everything when we speak privately,” he said.
“For now, I need you to tell me whether the agreement can proceed.””
“Not without reviewing the underlying records.””
“Can you do that today?””
“I'll make time. Send me copies of everything you have, and don't sign anything else related to the transaction.””
Julian swallowed.
“Is there a possibility that this could be a serious problem?””
“Yes.””
The directness of the answer unsettled him.
“How serious?””
“I can't assess that until I see the documents.””
The call ended.
Julian lowered the phone.
Sienna stepped forward.
“Who was that?””
“My attorney.””
Her face tightened.
“You shouldn't have involved him yet.””
Julian turned slowly.
“Why?””
“Because you don't know what Clara has sent you. She could have taken ordinary business correspondence and made it look suspicious.””
“Then the documents will clear everything up.””
Sienna said nothing.
He watched her carefully.
“Unless there's something they won't clear up.””
She looked away.
Julian walked toward the table and spread the documents across its surface.
He wanted to believe that there was an innocent explanation.
He wanted to believe that Sienna had made a mistake and that Clara had misunderstood what she'd found.
But every time he looked at the papers, another detail seemed to contradict the story he'd been telling himself.
The email was dated before the preliminary agreement.
The payment authorization referred to a company he didn't recognize.
The video showed Sienna meeting a man whose name appeared in the documents.
And the handwritten note suggested that the arrangement had been deliberately concealed.
He picked up the final page.
The name at the top was Daniel Mercer.
Julian recognized it immediately.
Daniel was a business intermediary who had been involved in the early stages of the Maui development.
He had introduced several potential investors to the project and helped arrange preliminary meetings.
But Daniel had disappeared from the negotiations months earlier.
Julian had been told that he had withdrawn because of a disagreement over compensation.
Now the document suggested that Daniel might have retained an undisclosed financial interest in the transaction.
Julian looked at Sienna.
“Did Daniel Mercer receive payments through the company?””
She didn't answer.
“Sienna.””
“I don't know every detail of the accounting.””
“You handled the accounting correspondence.””
“I handled administrative work.””
“You were copied on the emails.””
“Because I was your secretary.””
He stared at her.
“You told me Daniel had withdrawn from the deal.””
“He did.””
“Then why is his name on this document?””
She pressed her hands together.
“I can't explain every decision made by the people involved.””
“I'm not asking you to explain every decision. I'm asking you to explain yours.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You're acting as if I'm the only person who knew about the arrangement.””
The room became very quiet.
Julian stopped moving.
“What does that mean?””
Sienna immediately looked as though she regretted speaking.
“Nothing.””
“You just said other people knew.””
“I meant the consultants.””
“Which consultants?””
She shook her head.
“Forget it.””
“No.””
Julian stepped closer.
“You're going to tell me what you meant.””
For several seconds, she appeared to be deciding whether to continue the argument.
Then she exhaled.
“Daniel wasn't supposed to be involved after the first stage of the project. But he had an agreement with someone connected to the investment group.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Stop lying to me.””
Her face hardened.
“You want the truth? Fine. Daniel claimed he had a continuing interest in the project. He said he had helped secure the original property options and was entitled to compensation.””
“Why wasn't that disclosed?””
“Because the investment group didn't agree with his claim.””
“So you arranged payments?””
“I helped process invoices.””
“Under whose authority?””
She looked at him without answering.
Julian felt his anger rising.
“You let me sign an agreement that might have contained an undisclosed financial interest, and now you're telling me you don't know who authorized the payments?””
“I didn't say I didn't know.””
“Then tell me.””
Sienna's eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, Julian almost softened.
He had seen her upset before, but usually her emotions appeared only when she was frustrated or afraid of losing something she wanted.
Now she looked genuinely cornered.
“I was trying to protect you,” she whispered.
“From what?””
“From a dispute that could have delayed the acquisition.””
“By hiding it from me?””
“You were already under pressure. The investors wanted the deal finalized, and Daniel was threatening to raise questions about the ownership structure.””
Julian stared at her.
“And you decided the best solution was to keep me uninformed?””
“I thought I could resolve it.””
“How?””
She didn't answer.
He looked at the payment authorization again.
The amount was significant enough to attract attention if the records were reviewed carefully.
If the payment had been processed without proper approval, the consequences could be severe.
And if the beneficiary had been deliberately concealed, the issue could extend beyond an administrative mistake.
Julian took a step back.
“I'm freezing my involvement until my attorney reviews everything.””
Sienna's expression changed.
“You can't do that.””
“I just did.””
“You'll lose the deal.””
“Then I'll lose the deal.””
“You have no idea what you've just done.””
“Maybe not,” he said.
“But I'm no longer willing to trust you without evidence.””
Her eyes narrowed.
For the first time, the polished professional mask she'd worn since their arrival seemed to disappear completely.
“You should be careful, Julian.””
He stared at her.
“Is that a threat?””
“It's advice.””
“Then give me some useful advice. Tell me who authorized the payments.””
She looked toward the door.
He followed her gaze.
“Are you waiting for someone?””
“No.””
“Then why do you keep looking at the door?””
She didn't respond.
Julian's phone rang.
It was his attorney.
He answered immediately.
“Have you reviewed the documents?””
“I've reviewed the first set. I need to be careful about what I say until I see the original records, but there are enough inconsistencies to justify suspending the transaction.””
Julian closed his eyes briefly.
“Can you identify the beneficiary?””
“Not conclusively from the copies you've sent. However, the payment authorization appears to reference a holding company connected to the project.””
“Who owns it?””
“That's what we're trying to establish.””
Julian glanced at Sienna.
She had gone completely still.
“There's another issue,” his attorney continued.
“The document you sent includes a reference to a side agreement dated September 12. If that agreement exists, it could materially affect the ownership disclosures.””
“Can you obtain it?””
“We'll need to request the original records. In the meantime, don't discuss the details with anyone who may be involved.””
Julian looked directly at Sienna.
“Understood.””
He ended the call.
Sienna took a step toward him.
“Julian, you need to listen to me before you make any more decisions.””
“I'm listening.””
“The arrangement was never intended to hurt you.””
“Then why was it hidden?””
She hesitated.
“Because someone had something to lose.””
“Who?””
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she said something that made the entire room seem to tilt.
“Daniel wasn't working alone.””
Julian's throat tightened.
“With whom?””
Sienna shook her head.
“I shouldn't have said anything.””
“You've already said it.””
“Julian, if you expose this before we know the full story, you could destroy more than the acquisition.””
“Who was working with Daniel?””
She stared at him.
Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she answered.
“Someone who knew you before I did.””
Julian felt a chill move down his spine.
He searched his memory.
His business partners.
His former advisers.
The people who had helped him build his company.
The relatives who had occasionally invested in his ventures.
He couldn't identify anyone who fit the description.
Then he remembered the name on the last document.
Daniel Mercer.
And beneath it, in smaller print, was a reference to an authorization he had seen before.
A signature.
Not Sienna's.
Not Daniel's.
Someone else's.
Julian reached for the page and held it closer to the light.
He recognized the handwriting.
He had seen it on old correspondence, legal documents, and personal letters.
It belonged to someone he had once trusted without question.
Someone whose involvement in the Maui agreement had never been disclosed to him.
He felt his heart begin to pound.
“Where did you get this document?”” he asked Sienna.
She didn't answer.
“Who gave it to you?””
Her eyes filled with tears again.
But this time, Julian wasn't moved by them.
He was beginning to understand that her silence wasn't confusion.
It was calculation.
He took out his phone and photographed the page.
Then he sent it to his attorney with a short message.
Please identify the signatory and confirm whether this authorization is authentic.
Sienna watched him.
“You're making a terrible mistake.””
“Maybe,” Julian said.
“But I'm done making decisions based on your assurances.””
He walked toward the window and stared at the ocean.
The view was breathtaking.
Blue water.
White waves.
A distant horizon that seemed to promise endless possibilities.
It was the kind of place where he had imagined spending the first days of his marriage.
Instead, he was standing alone with a woman who might have concealed a serious business arrangement from him.
And his wife, thousands of miles away, had apparently known enough to prepare for this moment before he'd even boarded the plane.
His phone vibrated.
His attorney had replied.
The signature appears consistent with the documents you previously provided. We need the original to verify it conclusively.
Julian stared at the message.
Then another notification appeared.
This one was from Clara.
Now you understand why I couldn't explain everything at the airport.
He typed a response.
Who signed the authorization?
Her answer arrived a few seconds later.
You already know the name.
Julian looked back at the document.
His fingers went cold.
Because Clara was right.
He knew the name.
He knew the handwriting.
And he knew exactly why the person behind that signature had never wanted the Maui agreement examined.
The next message from Clara contained only one sentence.
Julian, before you confront anyone else, you need to ask yourself why Sienna was so determined to come to Hawaii with you.
He read it twice.
Then he slowly turned toward Sienna.
She was no longer crying.
She was watching him with an expression he had never seen before.
Not affection.
Not fear.
Something closer to desperation.
May you like
And when she realized he had understood the significance of the signature, she whispered four words that shattered the last of his certainty.
“Your wife knows everything.””
