Chapter 4: The Envelope That Changed Everything

Julian stared at Sienna's hand wrapped around his wrist.

“Let go of me.””

She released him immediately, but her expression remained tense.

“Julian, please. You need to understand that whatever Clara sent you, she's trying to manipulate you.””

He looked at the cream-colored envelope on the table.

“Then why are you afraid of it?””

“I'm not afraid.””

“Really?””

He lifted his phone and showed her the photograph again.

“Then explain this.””

Sienna glanced at the screen, and something in her face collapsed.

For two years, she'd been the person Julian trusted to manage his most sensitive business matters. She knew his schedule, his financial arrangements, his private meetings, and the names of people he preferred not to discuss in public.

She'd always been composed.

Always prepared.

Always ready with an explanation.

Now, standing in the middle of the honeymoon suite, she looked like someone who had just realized that the past could catch up with her.

Julian reached for the envelope.

This time, she didn't stop him.

He tore it open.

Inside were several documents, a printed email, and a photograph of a building he recognized immediately.

His stomach tightened.

The building was located in Maui, only a short drive from the hotel.

It wasn't a resort.

It was the administrative office of a property investment company that had recently become important to his business.

Julian had spent months negotiating a confidential acquisition involving a development project on the island.

The project had the potential to transform his company's financial position.

If the agreement went through, he would secure a lucrative interest in several commercial properties near the coast.

He had told Clara almost nothing about it.

Not because she wasn't intelligent enough to understand, but because he considered his business affairs separate from his marriage.

At least, that was the excuse he'd used.

He examined the first document.

His name appeared near the top.

Beneath it was the name of a company he recognized.

Then he saw the date.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

The document was a copy of a preliminary agreement he'd signed several weeks earlier.

But someone had highlighted a paragraph in yellow.

He read it once.

Then again.

The agreement required the principal investor to disclose any existing contractual obligations that could affect the proposed acquisition.

Julian frowned.

He knew about the clause.

He'd reviewed it with his legal team.

What he hadn't expected was the handwritten note beneath it.

See Schedule C. Undisclosed beneficiary interest.

He flipped through the pages.

Schedule C wasn't there.

Instead, he found a printed email addressed to the investment company's legal representative.

The sender's name made his heart stumble.

Sienna.

He looked up slowly.

“You sent this?””

She took a step toward him.

“Julian, I can explain.””

“You sent an email to their legal department?””

“It was part of my work.””

“Then why wasn't I copied?””

She hesitated.

He looked back at the page.

The email referenced a financial interest that had not been disclosed in the preliminary agreement.

It also mentioned a separate arrangement involving a third party.

Julian read the paragraph carefully, trying to understand why Clara had sent it to him.

Then he saw the attachment listed at the bottom.

A payment authorization.

The amount was substantial.

And the account connected to it belonged to a company he had never approved.

His mouth went dry.

“Who authorized this payment?””

Sienna looked toward the windows.

“It's not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

She remained silent.

Julian dropped the documents onto the table.

“Two minutes ago, you told me Clara was manipulating me. Now I'm looking at a confidential business agreement with your name on an email you apparently sent without my knowledge.””

“You don't understand how these deals work.””

“Then help me understand.””

Sienna's eyes filled with frustration.

“You were going to lose the acquisition if I didn't handle things quietly.””

“Handle what?””

“The beneficiary arrangement.””

“What beneficiary arrangement?””

She pressed her lips together.

Julian felt a cold sensation move through his chest.

He remembered several conversations from the previous month.

Sienna had asked him to approve unusual administrative expenses.

She'd said the payments were related to consultants.

He'd signed the forms without examining every attachment.

He'd trusted her.

Now he wondered how much of that trust she'd used against him.

He picked up the printed email again.

The language was precise.

It suggested that someone had been receiving financial benefits connected to the acquisition.

Someone whose interest had not been disclosed.

And the arrangement appeared to have been in place before Julian signed the preliminary agreement.

He looked at Sienna.

“Did you use my company to pay someone?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. Not exactly.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I was protecting the deal.””

“From whom?””

She didn't respond.

Julian's phone vibrated.

A new message from Clara appeared.

The documents are only the beginning. If you want to know who arranged the payments, read the email dated September 12.

He searched the papers.

The email was there, tucked between the preliminary agreement and a printed transaction record.

He unfolded it.

The date was September 12.

The message had been sent by Sienna to an external consultant.

Julian read the first few lines.

Then his face changed.

The email discussed a payment schedule and a confidential side arrangement.

At the bottom was a sentence that made his heart pound.

Julian doesn't need to know until everything is finalized. By then, he won't have a choice.

He stared at the words.

For several seconds, he could barely hear the ocean beyond the windows.

Then he looked at Sienna.

“Who were you talking about?””

She didn't answer.

“Who?””

“Julian, please.””

“Who were you planning to leave without a choice?””

Sienna's expression hardened.

“You're making this sound criminal.””

“I'm asking you a question.””

She folded her arms.

“You don't get to interrogate me because your wife decided to ruin our trip.””

He gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Our trip?””

The words hung between them.

Sienna realized what she'd said.

She immediately tried to correct herself.

“I mean the business trip.””

But Julian had already heard the difference.

He looked at her white dress.

At the expensive suitcase beside the wardrobe.

At the carefully arranged room he'd imagined sharing with his wife.

And suddenly, several details he'd ignored became impossible to dismiss.

Sienna had known exactly when he planned to travel.

She'd been prepared to come before he'd even told Clara.

She'd acted as though the honeymoon arrangement was inconvenient, yet she'd arrived dressed for a romantic vacation.

He'd explained it all away because he liked having her attention.

Because she made him feel important.

Because he'd convinced himself that the boundaries he'd crossed were harmless.

But now he was looking at documents suggesting that the same woman might have been using his trust to arrange something behind his back.

He took out his phone.

“I need to call my legal team.””

Sienna's eyes widened.

“Don't do that.””

“Why not?””

“Because they'll freeze the acquisition before we can explain anything.””

“Then perhaps there's something that needs explaining.””

“You'll destroy everything you've worked for.””

Julian stopped.

That was the one threat she knew would frighten him.

His company had taken years to build.

He had risked money, time, and his reputation to reach this point.

The Maui acquisition was supposed to be the culmination of that work.

If the deal collapsed, the consequences could extend far beyond a lost investment.

But if the documents were authentic, proceeding without investigation could be worse.

He opened his contacts.

Before he could select a number, another message arrived.

This one contained a short video.

Julian tapped it.

The footage showed the entrance of a modern office building.

A man stepped out carrying a folder.

Behind him was Sienna.

She glanced around before handing him an envelope.

The video ended.

Julian watched it again.

Then he raised his eyes toward the woman standing across from him.

“Who is that man?””

Sienna's face had gone completely pale.

She didn't answer.

Julian lowered the phone.

For the first time, he understood why Clara had allowed him to board the plane.

She hadn't been trying to stop the acquisition.

She'd wanted him to arrive in Hawaii and discover something he could no longer ignore.

And whatever the truth was, it involved more than a secretary who'd joined her boss on his honeymoon.

Julian looked at the remaining documents.

One page was folded in half and marked with a handwritten note.

Read this last.

He opened it.

There was a name at the top.

A name he recognized.

A name belonging to someone who had been involved in his life long before Sienna became his secretary.

His breath caught.

Then he looked at the door, suddenly aware that the person who could explain everything might be closer than he'd imagined.

And when his phone rang a moment later, he saw the caller's name.

*Clara.*

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was calm.

“Somewhere you should have thought about before you invited Sienna on our honeymoon.””

“Clara, what have you done?””

“Nothing you didn't give me a reason to do.””

He glanced at the documents.

“Who is this man?””

A pause followed.

Then Clara spoke.

“Before I answer that, Julian, I need you to tell me something.””

“What?””

“Did you really believe I would never discover what you and Sienna were doing with the Maui agreement?””

Julian opened his mouth.

No words came out.

And in the silence that followed, Clara understood that he had finally begun to see the truth.

May you like

But he had only seen the first layer.

The most devastating part was still waiting.
