Chapter 7: The Child Behind The Second Wall

The small hand remained frozen in the opening.

Five tiny fingers.

Pale skin.

Shaking.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

Because my mind refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

Vanessa had just told me her first daughter was dead.

Then she told me her first daughter was alive.

And now a child’s hand was reaching through a wall that had no reason to exist.

Lily buried her face against my side.

“Daddy…”

“I’m here.””

My voice barely worked.

I stared at Vanessa.

“Open it.””

She didn’t move.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes were locked on the wall.

“I can’t.””

The words shocked me.

Not because she said them.

Because of the fear behind them.

This wasn’t the fear of remembering something painful.

This was the fear of facing something she had spent years avoiding.

I grabbed the edge of the broken panel and pulled.

The wood cracked.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Then the opening widened.

A narrow space appeared behind it.

Another hidden room.

Another place someone had disappeared.

And inside…

A girl was sitting against the wall.

She looked about eight years old.

Her hair was tangled.

Her clothes were old.

But her eyes were the thing I noticed first.

They were the same eyes as Emma’s.

The same eyes as Lily’s.

The same eyes as Vanessa’s.

The girl looked at Vanessa.

And whispered:

“You came back.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

A sound escaped her.

Not a scream.

Something worse.

A broken sound.

“Amelia.””

The girl blinked.

I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

Amelia.

Another name.

Another daughter.

Another secret.

I turned slowly.

“How many children are there, Vanessa?””

She looked at me.

Tears streamed down her face.

“I don’t know.””

That answer terrified me.

Because it meant even she didn’t know how deep this went.

The girl in the wall slowly crawled out.

She moved carefully.

Like she expected someone to pull her back.

Like freedom was something she didn’t trust yet.

I knelt down.

“Hi.””

She looked at me.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Ryan.””

She glanced at Vanessa.

“Are you her husband?””

I nodded.

The girl looked away.

“She never told you.””

“No.””

“She never tells anyone.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Amelia…”

The girl flinched.

“You still remember my name?””

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

It was disappointment.

A child disappointed by her own mother.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She sat down on the floor.

Like she couldn’t stand anymore.

“I thought she was gone.””

I stared at her.

“You thought?””

She looked at Amelia.

“After Emma disappeared, I searched for years.””

Amelia’s face changed.

“Years?””

Vanessa froze.

“Yes.””

The girl laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“You searched?””

She looked around the hidden room.

“You never looked here.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know.””

“You built this house.””

The sentence hit hard.

Vanessa looked down.

“I was a child.””

Amelia’s eyes hardened.

“You were my mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Because there was nothing to say.

A child had been trapped.

And an adult had failed her.

Even if she was scared.

Even if she was manipulated.

Even if she had been hurt too.

Amelia had still been alone.

I looked at the room behind her.

There was a small blanket.

A plastic cup.

A pile of old drawings.

One drawing was lying near the entrance.

I picked it up.

It showed a family.

A mother.

Three little girls.

And a man standing behind them.

The man’s face had been scratched out.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

Amelia looked at me.

“You know him?””

I nodded slowly.

“He’s here.””

Her face changed instantly.

“No.””

The word came from deep inside her.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“He found us?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“How long has he known about this?””

She didn’t answer.

A sound came from the passage.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Everyone froze.

Daniel.

He appeared at the end of the hallway.

But he wasn’t smiling anymore.

For the first time, he looked angry.

“Amelia.””

The girl immediately moved behind me.

Daniel noticed.

His expression changed.

“You don’t need to be afraid.””

Amelia shook her head.

“You always say that.””

Daniel looked hurt.

Almost offended.

Like he was the victim.

“I protected you.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You trapped me.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“This is what you taught her?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about teaching anyone.””

Daniel smiled.

“There she is.””

“What?””

“The woman who pretends she’s innocent.””

I moved between them.

“Enough.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You still believe her?””

I said nothing.

Because I didn’t know.

And he saw it.

That was the worst part.

He saw the doubt.

“Good.””

Daniel nodded.

“You should question everything.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Ryan, don’t listen.””

Daniel laughed.

“You don’t want him listening because he’ll ask the one question you never answered.””

“What question?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Why does Vanessa have three daughters?””

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

My stomach tightened.

“Three?””

Daniel smiled.

“There’s always another secret.””

I grabbed Vanessa’s arm.

“Tell me.””

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me now.””

A tear fell from her face.

“Before Emma…”

She stopped.

Then:

“There was another baby.””

I felt numb.

“No.””

“She died.””

Daniel interrupted.

“She disappeared.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Shut up.””

But her voice had no strength.

I stared.

“How many?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Four.””

Lily gasped.

I looked at her.

“Four daughters?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Four.””

The room became impossible to understand.

A lifetime of secrets hidden behind walls.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I understand you’re a monster.””

His smile faded.

“You don’t know what she did.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She destroyed every child she touched.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Daniel pointed toward Amelia.

“Ask her.””

I looked at Amelia.

The girl stared at Vanessa.

Then whispered:

“She didn’t save us.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

My chest tightened.

“Amelia…”

The girl shook her head.

“You came back for Emma.””

A pause.

“But not for me.””

Vanessa broke.

“I tried.””

“No.””

Amelia stepped forward.

“You stopped looking.””

The words cut deeper than anything Daniel had said.

Vanessa collapsed.

And I realized something.

Daniel wasn’t just hiding children.

He was hiding the moments when people gave up.

The moments when someone could have saved them.

The moments nobody wanted to remember.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture.

My blood froze.

It was Emma.

She was sitting in another room.

But this time, Daniel wasn’t behind her.

Someone else was.

A woman.

Older.

Standing behind Emma with one hand on her shoulder.

Under the picture was a message.

*You found three.*

Another message appeared.

*Now find the mother.*

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face changed.

Because she knew exactly who sent it.

“Who is that?””

She didn’t answer.

The phone buzzed again.

A final message.

*Ryan, your wife isn’t the only one who kept a child in the walls.*

I looked toward the hidden rooms.

The endless passages.

The secrets beneath our home.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is the mother?””

She whispered:

“My mother.””

May you like

And somewhere inside the walls…

A child started screaming.
