Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Buried Twice

The man standing at my front door didn’t look like someone who had returned from the dead.

He looked like someone who had been waiting.

Waiting for the exact moment when the door would open.

Waiting for the exact moment when Emma would finally be too scared to run.

His eyes moved from me to the little girl sitting on the floor.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then it disappeared.

“Emma,” he said quietly.

The little girl pressed herself against the wall.

“No.””

The man tilted his head.

“Sweetheart, it’s me.””

“No!””

Her scream echoed through the house.

Lily covered her ears.

I immediately stepped in front of both girls.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You didn’t tell him.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was a fact.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Ryan, close the door.””

I didn’t move.

“Who is he?””

The man smiled faintly.

“I’m Daniel.””

The name landed like a stone.

Emma’s father.

The man my wife had told me was dead.

I stared at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Terrified.

That told me more than any explanation could.

Daniel took one step forward.

“Vanessa, we need to talk.””

“No.””

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Daniel looked amused.

“You always say that.””

I tightened my grip on the door.

“You need to leave.””

Daniel looked at me.

“And you must be Ryan.””

I froze.

“How do you know my name?””

He smiled.

“Everyone knows your name.””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

I pushed the door halfway closed.

But Daniel put his hand against it.

Not aggressively.

Not violently.

Almost casually.

Like he already knew I wouldn’t be able to stop him.

“Move your hand,” I said.

His smile disappeared.

“Ryan, you have no idea what you married into.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Still lying?””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I looked between them.

Eight years of history existed between these two people.

Eight years of secrets.

And somehow I had been living in the middle of it without knowing.

I pushed the door shut.

Then locked it.

Daniel remained outside.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he knocked again.

Emma started shaking.

“He knows.””

I looked down.

“What does he know?””

She whispered:

“He knows where I hide.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

I crouched beside her.

“Emma, listen to me. Nobody is taking you anywhere.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t know him.””

“No.””

I glanced at the locked door.

“But I’m going to.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my hand.

“Ryan, you don’t understand.””

I turned.

“Then make me understand.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was nineteen.””

The words came out slowly.

“I was young. Stupid. I thought I knew him.””

She looked toward Emma.

“I thought I could save him.””

“Save him from what?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“From himself.””

Another knock.

This time harder.

Daniel’s voice came through the door.

“Vanessa.””

She flinched.

“I know you’re in there.””

Emma covered her ears.

“He always talks like that.””

I looked at her.

“Like what?””

“Like he already won.””

The sentence disturbed me.

Because it sounded like something a child shouldn’t know.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“What happened eight years ago?””

She sat down slowly.

Like her legs could no longer hold her.

“Daniel and I were married.””

I stared.

“You were married?””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“I was pregnant with Emma when things started changing.””

“What things?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then at Emma.

“I thought he was just angry.””

She paused.

“But anger became control.””

Daniel knocked again.

“Vanessa, open the door.””

She ignored him.

“He started deciding who I could talk to. Where I could go. What I could wear.””

I listened silently.

“I tried to leave.””

Her voice cracked.

“But every time I tried, he found me.””

Emma looked down.

“He found Mommy.””

Vanessa nodded.

“One night, I took Emma and ran.””

“Where?””

“My sister’s house.””

She closed her eyes.

“I thought we were safe.””

Another pause.

“Then Daniel came.””

The room went quiet.

“What happened?””

Vanessa’s fingers twisted together.

“He took Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“You let him?””

“No!””

The word exploded from her.

Then she lowered her voice.

“No.””

She looked broken.

“He tricked me.””

“How?””

“He called me.””

She wiped her face.

“He said Emma was sick. He said if I didn’t come alone, he would hurt her.””

Emma began crying.

I looked at her.

“You remember?””

She nodded.

“Daddy locked the door.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“When I got there, Emma was gone.””

My chest tightened.

“What did the police say?””

“They found Daniel’s car near a river.””

“And?””

Vanessa looked up.

“They found evidence.””

“What evidence?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“They believed Emma was dead.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Emma.

The little girl sitting in front of me.

Alive.

Hidden.

Waiting.

“But she wasn’t.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why did you tell everyone she was?””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Because Daniel told me something.””

“What?””

“He said if I kept looking for Emma, he would make sure she really disappeared.””

A knock interrupted us.

Daniel’s voice came again.

“Ryan.””

I looked at the door.

“He knows you’re there.””

I didn’t answer.

“You think Vanessa is protecting you.””

A pause.

“She isn’t.””

Vanessa stood.

“Don’t listen.””

Daniel continued.

“She never told you what happened after she found Emma.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa went still.

Daniel laughed quietly from outside.

“There it is.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened after she found her?””

Vanessa looked at Emma.

Then away.

“I found her two years ago.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

Emma looked at her mother.

Vanessa whispered:

“She was already living in the walls.””

I felt sick.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you left her there?””

Tears rolled down Vanessa’s face.

“I was scared.””

I stepped back.

“Scared of what?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Scared that Emma would tell you the truth.””

The house went completely silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What truth?””

She looked at Emma.

The little girl stared back.

Then she whispered:

“Mommy didn’t put me in the wall.””

Vanessa exhaled.

Relief crossed her face.

“But she knew who did.””

My heart started pounding.

I looked at Daniel outside.

Then back at Vanessa.

“Who?””

Emma’s voice was barely audible.

“He did.””

She pointed toward the front door.

“He put me there.””

Daniel stopped knocking.

For the first time, the house became quiet.

Too quiet.

Then his voice came through the door.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“Emma.””

The little girl shook.

“You know that’s not true.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

Daniel continued.

“Tell Ryan what happened the night you disappeared.””

Emma began crying.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Tell him.””

I stepped closer to the door.

“Stop talking to her.””

Daniel ignored me.

“Tell him who locked the door.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Who locked the door?””

She closed her eyes.

And that was when I heard the sound.

Not from outside.

Not from Daniel.

From inside the house.

A soft creak.

The sound of a floorboard moving.

Someone else was there.

I turned slowly.

The hallway behind me was empty.

But Lily was gone.

My heart dropped.

“Where’s Lily?””

Vanessa looked around.

Her face changed instantly.

“Lily?””

I ran toward the stairs.

“Lily!””

No answer.

Then I saw it.

Her bedroom door was open.

And on the floor outside it was a small piece of paper.

A child’s handwriting.

Three words.

*Daddy found me.*

I looked back at the front door.

Daniel was still standing outside.

Smiling.

And for the first time, I understood.

May you like

He wasn’t trying to get inside.

He was already inside.
