Chapter 6: The Lie Buried Under The Floorboards
The darkness swallowed everything.
For one terrifying second, I couldn’t hear anything.
Not Daniel.
Not Lily.
Not Vanessa.
Nothing.
Then my instincts took over.
“Lily!””
I lunged forward.
My shoulder hit something hard.
A wall.
The passage.
I reached out blindly, searching.
“Daddy!””
Lily’s voice came from somewhere ahead.
“I’m here!””
Relief hit me so hard my knees almost gave out.
But then another sound followed.
A struggle.
A sharp gasp.
Vanessa screamed.
“Daniel, stop!””
The flashlight in my hand slipped.
I found the switch.
Nothing.
Dead.
The power had been cut.
I pulled out my phone and turned on the light.
The beam shook across the passage.
Daniel was gone.
Lily was standing against the wall.
And Vanessa was on the ground.
My heart stopped.
I ran to her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded weakly.
“He took Emma.””
I looked around.
“What?””
Vanessa pointed deeper into the passage.
My stomach dropped.
Emma was gone.
I grabbed Lily.
“Are you hurt?””
She shook her head.
“He told me not to be scared.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
“Daniel.””
Her small voice trembled.
“He said he was going to fix everything.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“He’s not fixing anything.””
Lily looked down.
“He said Mommy broke our family.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because even now, even after everything, there were still things she wasn’t saying.
I helped her stand.
“Where would he take Emma?””
Vanessa stared into the darkness.
“I don’t know.””
I grabbed her shoulders.
“Yes, you do.””
She looked at me.
“No.””
“You do.””
My voice cracked.
“You know this house. You know Daniel. You know these passages.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Ryan…”
“Where would he go?””
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“The old room.””
“What room?””
She pointed deeper into the passage.
“The room where everything started.””
We moved quickly.
The passage twisted beneath the house.
I couldn’t believe it existed.
A hidden world underneath our home.
A place where children disappeared.
A place where my wife had buried pieces of her life.
The walls were covered with old marks.
Dates.
Names.
Drawings.
As we walked, Lily held my hand tightly.
“Daddy.””
“What?””
“Is Emma my sister?””
I looked at her.
I didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth had become something dangerous.
Something that could hurt children.
So I squeezed her hand.
“Yes.””
Her eyes widened.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
She was quiet.
Then:
“I knew she was.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Lily shrugged.
“She talks to me.””
I stopped walking.
Vanessa stopped too.
“What do you mean?””
Lily looked confused.
“She used to sing to me.””
A chill moved through me.
“When?””
“Before you found her.””
I stared.
“You mean inside the wall?””
She nodded.
“She said she was my sister.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“You knew?””
Lily looked at her.
“I thought you knew.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
My wife had been living with this secret.
My daughter had been living beside it.
And I had been the only person who didn’t know.
We reached the end of the passage.
A wooden door stood there.
Old.
Rotting.
Vanessa stopped.
“This is it.””
I opened it.
Inside was a bedroom.
A child’s bedroom.
But it looked frozen in time.
A small bed.
A faded stuffed animal.
A shelf full of toys.
And pictures.
Hundreds of pictures.
I stepped closer.
My stomach turned.
Every picture was of Vanessa.
And a little girl.
The first Emma.
But something was wrong.
The photos weren’t normal family pictures.
They were taken from far away.
Through windows.
Through doorways.
From hidden places.
Someone had been watching.
Daniel.
“He was obsessed,” Vanessa whispered.
I turned.
“What happened here?””
She looked at the room.
“I need to tell you.””
“Finally.””
She nodded.
“When I was nineteen, Daniel convinced me to marry him.””
She touched one of the pictures.
“He wasn’t like this at first.””
“They never are.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
She looked at me.
I regretted saying it.
But I couldn’t take it back.
“He loved me,” she whispered.
“Or he loved controlling you?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
“After Emma was born, he changed.””
She walked toward the bed.
“He became convinced that everyone wanted to take her away.””
“Why?””
“He thought the world was dangerous.””
“And he thought he was the only one who could protect her?””
She nodded.
“He stopped letting me leave the house.””
I looked at the locked windows.
“The hidden rooms…”
“Were his idea.””
My chest tightened.
“He built them for Emma.””
“For what?””
Vanessa looked at the bed.
“So he could hide her.””
The words felt unreal.
“He told her it was a game.””
I looked around the room.
A child’s room.
A prison disguised as safety.
“He told me if I loved her, I would understand.””
I felt sick.
“Then what happened?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“One night, I escaped.””
“With Emma?””
She nodded.
“I took her and ran.””
“Then how did she die?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She didn’t.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She never died.””
The room went silent.
“But you told everyone she did.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Because Daniel made me.””
I waited.
“He told me if I admitted she was alive, he would hurt her.””
“But she was already with you?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
A tear fell.
“He took her back.””
The pieces began moving.
The hidden room.
The passages.
The fear.
“The first Emma…”
Vanessa nodded.
“She was trapped here.””
I looked around.
“This room?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
She closed her eyes.
“Three months.””
My stomach twisted.
“And you?””
“I searched everywhere.””
“Then why didn’t you find her?””
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“Because someone told me I was looking in the wrong place.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“My father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“My father knew about Daniel.””
The room changed.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
“Your father knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he help?””
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“Because he helped Daniel.””
I felt numb.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel paid him.””
Silence.
Then a sound.
A small movement.
From behind the wall.
We all turned.
A knock.
Three times.
Slow.
Familiar.
The same sound I had heard in our bedroom.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Daddy.””
I looked at the wall.
Someone was inside.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her face had gone white.
“That’s not Daniel.””
The knocking came again.
Three times.
Then a voice.
A child’s voice.
But not Emma’s.
“Vanessa?””
My wife stumbled backward.
“No.””
The voice came through the wall.
“You left me here.””
Lily hid behind me.
I stared at Vanessa.
“Who is that?””
She looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“Ryan…”
The wall creaked.
Something moved behind it.
“Who is that?””
Her lips trembled.
And then she said the words that made my blood run cold.
“My first daughter.””
The wall cracked open.
A small hand reached through.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered:
“She’s alive.””
